Common questions
How does it compare to the old Pro Display XDR?
Apple states the Studio Display XDR replaces the Pro Display XDR. The panel is smaller (27" 5K vs 32" 6K, both 218 ppi) but newer everywhere else: 2,304 mini-LED dimming zones versus 576, 2,000 versus 1,600 nits peak HDR, 120 Hz versus 60, Thunderbolt 5, a built-in camera and speakers — and the height-adjustable stand is included, where the Pro Display XDR's stand cost £949 extra. At £2,999 it undercuts the old display by more than £1,500 before the stand.
Do I need the XDR, or is the Studio Display enough?
Buy the XDR for HDR grading and finishing, colour-critical photography and print (Adobe RGB), or 120 Hz motion work — jobs where the panel pays for itself. For development, design, office work and docking, the standard Studio Display delivers the same 5K sharpness, camera and audio for £1,500 less.
Which Macs drive it at 120 Hz?
Apple lists compatibility for Apple-silicon Macs on macOS Tahoe 26.3.1 or later, but M1, M2 and M3-generation machines are limited to 60 Hz. Current-generation Apple silicon (including M4-family desktops and M5 MacBooks) supports the full 120 Hz, as does iPad Pro (M5). Everything else about the display works at 60 Hz on the older Macs.
Is 27 inches enough for reference work?
It's smaller than the 32" Pro Display XDR it replaces — that's the honest trade-off. Pixel density is identical (218 ppi) so nothing is lost in sharpness, and at £2,999 with the stand, a dual-XDR desk now costs less than a single Pro Display XDR did with its stand and nano glass.
