Mac Studio (M4 Max / M3 Ultra)

Studio runs M4 Max (one generation older); MacBook Pro 16 runs M5 Max. The MacBook Pro is faster on per-core CPU and has the per-GPU-core Neural Accelerators. But Mac Studio has dramatically more thermal headroom — sustained performance is higher under continuous load. For desk-bound users either is reasonable; choose Studio if you don't need portability and want the cost-per-spec advantage.

M3 Ultra doubles every spec: 32C vs 16C CPU, 80C vs 40C GPU, 512 GB vs 128 GB memory, 819 GB/s vs 546 GB/s bandwidth. Matters for: 8K video pipelines with multiple streams, ML model fine-tuning above 30B parameters, multi-monitor edit suites with 6+ displays, simulation / scientific compute with large in-memory datasets. The one-generation-older silicon doesn't matter for those workloads — bandwidth and core count dominate.

Apple's pattern is Ultra silicon trails Max by one generation. M5 Ultra is likely in the next Mac Studio refresh, expected mid-2026 to early 2027. If you need maximum compute now, M3 Ultra is the right product; if your deployment can wait 6-12 months, M5 Ultra may be a worthwhile delay.

Mac Pro is the same M2 Ultra silicon as the previous Mac Studio Ultra plus PCIe expansion slots. If you need PCIe (specialty audio cards, capture cards, networking) it's the right product. If you don't need PCIe, the Mac Studio M3 Ultra is newer silicon at lower cost.
