Why refurbished, and why now
For most server workloads — virtualisation, file, database, applications, DR — last-generation enterprise hardware is more than enough. What has changed is the maths: the AI build-out has made new servers both pricier and slower to arrive, while a deep secondary market keeps re-certified hardware abundant and immediate.
Buying one or two generations back captures the steepest part of the depreciation curve — modern, well-supported, plentiful hardware at a fraction of new-server cost.
Like-for-like enterprise spec at a fraction of new-server list — capex that frees budget for the rest of the project.
New-server lead times have stretched into months under AI-driven component demand. Re-certified stock ships now.
Early-life component failures (“infant mortality”) have already surfaced and been resolved — these are settled machines.
Most of a server’s lifecycle carbon is in manufacture. Reusing one avoids that footprint — a measurable Scope 3 win.
How we refurbish & re-certify every server
“Refurbished” only means something if it is a controlled process. Every unit Servnet ships passes the same seven stages — so what arrives is a sealed, spec-verified, warranty-backed server, not a second-hand gamble.
Secure data erasure
Every drive wiped to NIST 800-88 with a certificate of destruction — or physically destroyed on request. Nothing from a prior owner survives.
Component-grade testing
Full hardware audit, consumables renewed (fans, thermal paste, batteries), firmware updated, then 24–72 hours of burn-in under load before sign-off.
Graded & warrantied
Cosmetically graded (A/B), spec-verified and sealed, then shipped under a Servnet hardware warranty with extension and maintenance options.
Refurbished Dell, HPE & Lenovo servers
Each platform has its own deep-dive — the model families that refurbish best, which generation is the value sweet spot, and how the management stack holds up.

Dev, test & staging
Mirror production on identical hardware for a fraction of the cost — no reason to pay new-server prices for non-prod.
DR & cold standby
A re-certified twin of your production box on standby for failover, without doubling the hardware bill.
Edge, branch & ROBO
Remote and branch sites rarely need the latest silicon — refurbished towers and 1U racks fit the job and the budget.
Scale-out & capacity
Add nodes to an existing cluster on the same generation you already run, keeping the estate consistent.
Education, charity & public sector
Stretch constrained budgets further — enterprise capability within tight capital limits and framework spend.
Labs, training & homelab-to-prod
Real enterprise hardware for learning, certification labs and proof-of-concept work without the new-kit premium.
The greenest server is the one already built
A large share of a server’s lifetime carbon footprint is locked in at manufacture — the silicon, metals and assembly — long before it draws its first watt. Extending the life of hardware that already exists avoids that embodied carbon entirely, and keeps working equipment out of the e-waste stream.
For organisations reporting on Scope 3 emissions or circular-economy commitments, choosing re-certified hardware is a clear, defensible win — lower cost and lower carbon at the same time. We can provide the documentation to support your sustainability reporting.
24 years of enterprise IT behind every refurbished server
A reseller, not a clearance house
We sell new Dell, HPE and Lenovo every day — so we know these platforms intimately and grade refurbished stock to the same standard.
Configured to your workload
CPU, memory, storage, RAID and networking built to spec before the server ships — not a fixed box you have to work around.
One estate, new and refurbished
Mix new and re-certified hardware under one UK point of contact, with one engineering team behind the SLA.
Maintenance that outlives the OEM
Hardware warranty as standard, plus third-party maintenance for end-of-support gear — often beating the OEM on cost and SLA.
Refurbished servers — common questions
Are refurbished servers reliable enough for production?
Yes. Enterprise servers are engineered for years of continuous 24×7 operation, and a unit coming off a three-to-five-year data-centre lease has substantial life left. Every server we supply is component-audited, has consumables checked and firmware updated, is burn-in tested and ships under warranty — so it is appropriate for production across the vast majority of workloads. Early-life failures have already been shaken out, which can make a settled refurbished box more predictable than brand-new hardware.
How much cheaper are refurbished servers than new?
Typically 50–80% below new-server list for like-for-like specification, depending on generation, configuration and market supply. The saving is widest one or two generations back — exactly the sweet spot where the hardware is still modern, well-supported and abundant.
Why are new servers more expensive right now?
AI has driven unprecedented demand for GPUs, high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and advanced-node manufacturing. That has pushed up the price of DDR5 and enterprise SSDs, and stretched new-server lead times from weeks into months. Refurbished hardware sidesteps both the new-silicon premium and the supply-chain wait.
What does “refurbished” actually involve?
Every unit is sourced from decommissioned data-centre estates, then component-audited, securely data-wiped to the NIST 800-88 standard, has consumables and firmware renewed, is burn-in tested for 24–72 hours, re-certified against spec and sealed — then shipped under a Servnet hardware warranty. It is an engineered process, not simply “used”.
Is my data safe — what happens to the previous owner’s drives?
All storage is erased to the NIST 800-88 standard with a certificate of data destruction, or physically destroyed on request. No prior-owner data survives the refurbishment process.
Can you configure a refurbished server to my exact spec?
Yes — we populate processors, memory, storage tiers, RAID and networking to your workload before the unit is re-certified and shipped. Tell us the spec or describe the workload and we build to it.
Which brand should I choose — Dell, HPE or Lenovo?
All three refurbish excellently. Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant have the deepest secondary supply and parts pools; Lenovo ThinkSystem often offers keener pricing for equivalent spec and a strong reliability record. If you already run one brand, matching it keeps the estate and tooling consistent — see the dedicated pages for each.
What warranty and support comes with a refurbished server?
A Servnet-backed hardware warranty as standard, with extension and third-party-maintenance options — particularly valuable for end-of-support-life hardware, where third-party maintenance often beats the OEM SLA on cost. As a 24-year channel partner we can run mixed new-and-refurbished estates under one UK point of contact.
