The NetApp AFF C400 is a capacity-optimised all-flash storage system that bridges the gap between expensive performance flash and cost-effective spinning disk. Built on high-density NVMe QLC SSDs, the C400 delivers the economics of high-capacity disk arrays at all-flash performance and with full ONTAP data management intelligence.
QLC technology stores 4 bits per flash cell — achieving the highest available flash density at the lowest cost per gigabyte. The AFF C400's 4U chassis with 24 internal SSD slots, expandable via NS224 external shelves, reaches 1,152 SSDs per cluster and 141 PB effective capacity across 24 nodes. This makes the C400 the natural replacement for large HDD-based NAS systems requiring all-flash upgrade without the premium of TLC-based performance arrays.
Running ONTAP 9.12.1, the AFF C400 provides the full suite of NetApp data services — inline deduplication and compression (typical 4:1 capacity efficiency), SnapMirror replication, SnapLock Compliance for regulatory retention, FabricPool for automatic cold-data tiering to object storage, and ONTAP Autonomous Ransomware Protection to detect and protect against encryption-based attacks on secondary data.
Common deployments include consolidated backup and replication targets (replacing VTL and tape), secondary storage for database cloning and analytics, large unstructured NAS data repositories for genomics, media, and surveillance, and long-term regulatory data retention at flash speed and simplicity.
