Frequently asked questions
Can I configure both new and refurbished MSA arrays?
Yes — use the New / Refurbished toggle at the top. New covers the current MSA Gen7 (2070/2072) and Gen6 (2060/2062); Refurbished covers re-certified Gen5 (2050/2052), which HPE supports to 2028, plus the prior 2040 generation for third-party-maintenance budgets. The drive, RAID and connectivity options adapt to the array you pick.
How accurate is the usable-capacity figure?
It is a close indication. We multiply your raw capacity (drive size × quantity) by the RAID tier’s overhead — 50% for mirror (RAID 1/10), (n−1)/n for RAID 5, (n−2)/n for RAID 6, and a distributed-spare allowance for MSA-DP+. Real usable capacity also depends on pre-formatting, spare disks and pool layout, so Servnet confirms the exact figure on your quote.
Which RAID level should I choose?
On Gen6/Gen7 we recommend MSA-DP+ — HPE’s distributed RAID rebuilds far faster than classic parity, which matters with large drives. RAID 6 (dual parity) is the safe classic choice for big HDD pools; RAID 10 suits write-heavy, latency-sensitive workloads; RAID 5 maximises capacity for read-mostly data. The configurator only offers the RAID tiers your chosen array supports.
Fibre Channel, iSCSI or SAS — which host connectivity?
Fibre Channel (16Gb, or 32Gb on Gen7) suits established FC fabrics and the lowest-latency block access; 10/25GbE iSCSI runs over standard Ethernet and is the most flexible and cost-effective; 12Gb SAS is the simplest, lowest-cost option for direct-attach to one or two servers. 25GbE iSCSI and 32Gb FC are Gen7 options.
Does Servnet supply and support the MSA in the UK?
Yes — Servnet is a 20+ year HPE partner. We quote, supply, optionally install/configure (RAID, pools, host mapping) and support the MSA across the UK. New arrays come with HPE Tech Care; refurbished arrays carry a Servnet warranty with third-party-maintenance options for end-of-support hardware.
