Quantum DXi backup appliances
Fast restores and immutable copies, from a VM to 2.2 PB

A DXi sits between your backup software and everything slower: it takes backups at flash or disk speed, deduplicates them inline, locks them against change and sends copies on to another site, the cloud or tape.

The range

Three form factors, one DXi software stack

Every DXi runs the same DXi software, and Quantum includes a rich feature set without extra software charges[src]. The virtual V5000 omits VTL, Cloud Share, the Dynamic Application Environment and Cloud-Based Analytics[src]. Otherwise what changes is where it runs and how much it holds.

A Quantum DXi backup appliance comes as a virtual machine (V5000), a 1U all-flash NVMe system (the T10 family) or a scalable hybrid system with a 2U controller and disk packs (DXi9200)[src]. Capacity is unlocked by licence: the T10 models in 15 TB steps up to their installed capacity[src], the DXi9200 in 55 TB steps[src]. A T10 arrives fully configured, so growth inside a model is a licence key, not a hardware upgrade[src]; a DXi9200 grows with modular disk packs behind its 2U controller[src].

Maximum usable capacity per DXi model from Quantum's DXi-Series datasheet (June 2026), on a log scale. V5000 capacities depend on the hardware you provide. Usable capacity is before deduplication; logical capacity is far higher and depends on the data.
Data reduction

What a T10-120 holds depends on your data

DXi uses inline, variable-length deduplication and compression, which Quantum says is 3 to 6 times more efficient than fixed-block deduplication, with reduction “up to 70:1”[src]. Quantum bases the 70:1 on internal field data and says realised rates will vary[src].

Illustrative arithmetic: the logical backup data a DXi T10-120 (120 TB usable) could represent at different reduction ratios. The hatched bar applies Quantum's best-case 70:1 ratio. Quantum's datasheet figure of 25.2 PB for the T10-120 also counts Cloud Share capacity.

The Backup & DR sizing calculator works out the logical capacity your retention policy needs; dividing by a ratio you can defend gives the usable capacity to buy. For why reduction ratios swing so much, see deduplication and compression explained.

Edge, core, cloud

How DXi copies move between sites

DXi replication is asynchronous, AES-256 encrypted and sends only deduplicated data[src]. Quantum allows up to three replication targets from one DXi and up to 50 sources into a DXi9200[src].

Get a DXi sized and quoted

  • We size usable capacity from your retention policy and a reduction ratio we can defend, not the headline 70:1.
  • We match T10 or DXi9200 to your restore targets, ingest window and sites.
  • We check your backup software and version against Quantum’s compatibility guide.
  • We design the copies beyond it: DR replication, Cloud Share, ActiveScale or a Scalar library.

FAQs

Quantum DXi: common questions

What is a Quantum DXi?

A purpose-built backup appliance: a disk or flash target that your backup software writes to, which deduplicates and compresses the data inline as it arrives, keeps immutable copies, and replicates or tiers them elsewhere. Quantum sells it as a free or licensed virtual appliance (DXi V5000), 1U all-flash appliances (DXi T10-60 to T10-480) and a scalable hybrid system (DXi9200).

Which DXi model should we look at?

By usable capacity: V5000 Community Edition up to 5 TB (free), V5000 Enterprise Edition 5 to 256 TB on your own hardware, the T10 family at 60, 120, 240 or 480 TB in 1U of NVMe flash, and the DXi9200 from 110 TB to 2.2 PB in 7U to 12U. The T10 suits fast restores and edge or mid-size sites; the DXi9200 suits central repositories with long on-site retention.

How does DXi work with Veeam?

Through the Veeam Data Mover Service (VDMS), which DXi supports for Fast Clone and VM Instant Recovery. Quantum states DXi appliances are qualified as Veeam Ready Integrated storage and that VDMS creates synthetic full backups 15 times faster. DXi also supports Veritas OST, Commvault, Atempo and others over NFS, SMB, OST, VTL and AccentFS.

How does DXi make backups immutable?

Three ways, all included: Retention Lock applies file-level WORM according to retention policies, Secure Snapshot keeps point-in-time copies in storage that is not network-addressable, and OST WORM covers Veritas environments. Changes to retention or immutability settings need approval from both an Administrator and a designated Security Officer.

Is the 70:1 data reduction figure realistic?

It is Quantum’s best case, which it bases on internal field data from customer deployments and says will vary with the data. Ratios on real backups depend on change rate, retention and how much of the data is already compressed or encrypted. We size from your own backup data or a conservative assumption, never from the headline ratio.

Is there a free DXi?

Yes. DXi V5000 Community Edition is a free virtual appliance that protects up to 5 TB and includes DXi’s deduplication and security features; VTL, Cloud Share and the embedded application environment are not available on the V5000. It runs on KVM, VMware or Hyper-V with a minimum of 2 cores, 4 GB of RAM and 200 GB of disk, and can be upgraded to the Enterprise Edition.

Can a DXi copy backups to tape or the cloud?

Both. Path-to-Tape exports data to an attached tape library for backup applications that support it, and Cloud Share tiers compressed, deduplicated, encrypted backup sets to public or private cloud, including Quantum ActiveScale. Cloud Share capacity is twice the DXi’s licensed local capacity at no extra charge. Cloud Share is not available on the virtual V5000.
