iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16
One generation apart: every figure Apple publishes for both, side by side. 5 headline measures favour the iPhone 17 and 2 the iPhone 16, and 7 specifications differ outright. Written for the people who buy phones by the dozen rather than one at a time: what changed, what it changes about a rollout, and what it does not.
Bottom line. iPhone 17 suits field and lone-worker teams, executives and client-facing staff, volume fleets and shared devices, international travel and roaming, replacing a second screen on the road. iPhone 16 suits one-handed, all-day carry. Apple publishes no benchmark scores for either phone, so nothing here claims one is “faster”.

iPhone 17 against iPhone 16: the same Standard model, a generation apart. The 17 runs the A19, the 16 the A18. Apple publishes 107 specification lines for the two and 28 of them differ. The widest of those gaps are peak brightness outdoors (3000 nits against 2000 nits), front camera (18 MP against 12 MP), video playback (30 hrs against 22 hrs) and usable screen area (97.2 cm² against 91.3 cm²). The 79 lines where the 17 and the 16 read identically are on this page as well: a difference only means something next to what did not change.
7 specifications that are not the same
7 differences worth a decision. Apple's full specification for the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 16 differs on 28 of 107 published lines, and every one of those is in the table at the end; the ones below are the ones that change what the phone does.
What separates the 17 from the 16
10 figures Apple publishes for both. 5 favour the 17, 2 the 16 and 3 are the same number on both spec sheets. The badge marks the model a figure favours, which is not the same as the better buy — on weight it goes to the 16 at 170 g, because there the lower number wins.
17 and 16, drawn to the same scale
iPhone 17: 149.6 × 71.5 × 7.95 mm, 177 g. iPhone 16: 147.6 × 71.6 × 7.8 mm, 170 g. The outlines below are plotted from those millimetres at one scale, so the difference is the real one rather than two press photographs cropped to the same height.

What you are actually handing to staff: 17 or 16
Apple's own photography for both models, unedited. iPhone 17: Aluminium frame, Ceramic Shield 2 front, 3x better scratch resistance. iPhone 16: Aluminium frame, Ceramic Shield front. Apple lists the same frame material for the two, so the tiles below are a finish-and-housing comparison rather than a materials one.

17 or 16 — which one, and why
Drawn from the figures above: the 17 leads 5 of the 10 headline measures and the 16 2. Apple publishes no benchmark for the A19 or the A18, so nothing here claims one is faster — only what each is documented to do.
Choose the iPhone 17 if…
Widest measured lead: peak brightness outdoors, 3000 nits against 2000 nits — 50% more.
- Screen size: 6.3″ against 6.1″.
- Usable screen area: 97.2 cm² against 91.3 cm².
- Video playback: 30 hrs against 22 hrs.
- Peak brightness outdoors: 3000 nits against 2000 nits.
- Front camera: 18 MP against 12 MP.
- Fits best for field and lone-worker teams, executives and client-facing staff, volume fleets and shared devices, international travel and roaming and replacing a second screen on the road — a full shift away from a charger with satellite SOS behind it.
Choose the iPhone 16 if…
Widest measured lead: weight, 170 g against 177 g — 4% less.
- Weight: 170 g against 177 g.
- Thickness: 7.8 mm against 7.95 mm.
- Fits best for one-handed, all-day carry — weight and thickness for staff who carry a phone in a pocket for ten hours.
Where the 17 pulls ahead, and where the 16 does
Seven ways a business actually deploys phones, every call made on published figures only: 5 go to the 17, 1 to the 16 and 1 are level. Battery (30 against 22 hours), weight (177 against 170 g) and screen area (97.2 against 91.3 cm²) decide most of them.
Battery, zoom and capacity: 17 against 16
Video playback 30 against 22 hours, streamed video 27 against 18, optical zoom to 2× against 2×, a capacity ceiling of 512GB against 512GB. Four charts on shared axes, with the A19 and the A18 placed in Apple's own line of chips.

What changes for IT between the 17 and the 16
For whoever manages them, the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 16 part company on wireless — and on nothing else in this section. Enrolment, configuration profiles and the MDM you already run behave the same way on both.
SIM and provisioning
Apple publishes the same SIM line for the 17 and the 16, so provisioning is the same job on either, and both enrol through Apple Business Manager.
Unlock method
Both the 17 and the 16 unlock with Face ID, so one MDM passcode policy covers the pair without an exception for either.
Water and dust
The 17 and the 16 carry the same rating, IP68 to 6 metres. Apple tests it in laboratory conditions and it is not permanent, so on a site fleet it is still not a substitute for a case.
Safety features
Apple lists the same safety features on the 17 and the 16, so a lone-worker policy that names satellite SOS does not choose between them.
Wired transfer
Apple lists the same connector for the 17 and the 16: USB-C Supports USB 2.
Wireless
17: Wi-Fi 7 · Bluetooth 6. 16: Wi-Fi 7 · Bluetooth 5.3. Wi-Fi generation decides how a device behaves on a busy corporate WLAN long before it decides raw speed.
Apple Intelligence
Apple lists Apple Intelligence for both the 17 and the 16. The on-device AI features are the thing a data-handling policy has to have an answer for before either is rolled out.

Every line below is Apple’s own wording. Not listed means Apple does not publish that line in the specification for that model — usually because it arrived with a later generation. It is a statement about Apple’s specification, not about what the hardware can do.

iPhone 17 vs iPhone 16, answered
What is the real difference between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 16?
A19 replaces A18 — the graphics go from “5-core GPU” to “5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators”. Apple publishes no benchmark for either, so how much of that reaches a user depends entirely on the apps. Video playback goes from 22 hours to 30 — up 8 hours (36%) on Apple’s own measure. The display moves from 6.1″ to 6.3″, which is 6% more usable area.
Is the iPhone 17 worth upgrading to from the iPhone 16 for business use?
That depends on what the phones are used for. The iPhone 17 leads on field and lone-worker teams, executives and client-facing staff, volume fleets and shared devices, international travel and roaming and replacing a second screen on the road. The iPhone 16 still leads on one-handed, all-day carry. Battery is the figure most fleets feel: 30 hours against 22 on Apple's own video-playback test.
Which has better battery life, the iPhone 17 or the iPhone 16?
Apple quotes up to 30 hours of video playback for the iPhone 17 and up to 22 hours for the iPhone 16 — a 36% difference on the same test. Streamed video, which is closer to real use, is 27 hours against 18.
Can both be managed and enrolled the same way?
Yes. The iPhone 17 and the iPhone 16 both enrol through Apple Business Manager with automated device enrolment, take the same configuration profiles and are managed by whichever MDM you already run. What does differ for IT is wireless, plus how long each keeps receiving iOS feature updates.
How long will each one keep getting iOS updates?
Apple does not publish a support end date for any iPhone. What history shows is roughly five to seven years of iOS releases from launch, which puts the iPhone 16 1 generation further through that window than the iPhone 17. Plan a fleet on the older model's clock, not the newer one's.
Where these figures come from. Every specification on this page is taken from Apple’s own published material — iPhone 17 specifications and iPhone 16 specifications, cross-checked against Apple’s compare tool, captured 12 September 2026. Screen areas and percentage differences are calculated from those figures. This is a specification comparison only: nothing here is a benchmark, a price or a statement about stock.
