What changes for IT between the Duo and the 17
For whoever manages them, the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 17 part company on the SIM, the unlock method and wired transfer — and on nothing else in this section. Enrolment, configuration profiles and the MDM you already run behave the same way on both.
SIM and provisioning
The iPhone Duo is eSIM-only and the iPhone 17 still takes a nano-SIM. Every carrier and country in the estate has to be eSIM-ready before the eSIM-only model can go out.
Unlock method
The Duo uses Touch ID and the 17 Face ID. Both satisfy the same MDM passcode policies; the practical difference is gloves, masks and shared-device handover.
Water and dust
The Duo and the 17 carry the same rating, IP68 to 6 metres. Apple tests it in laboratory conditions and it is not permanent, so on a site fleet it is still not a substitute for a case.
Safety features
Apple lists the same safety features on the Duo and the 17, so a lone-worker policy that names satellite SOS does not choose between them.
Wired transfer
Duo: USB-C Supports USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s). 17: USB-C Supports USB 2. That gap shows up where devices are imaged, backed up or evidence-collected over a cable rather than over the air.
Wireless
Identical on both: Wi-Fi 7 · Bluetooth 6. Wi-Fi generation decides how a device behaves on a busy corporate WLAN long before it decides raw speed, and here it decides nothing between the Duo and the 17.
Apple Intelligence
Apple lists Apple Intelligence for both the Duo and the 17. The on-device AI features are the thing a data-handling policy has to have an answer for before either is rolled out.

What is the real difference between the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 17?
A20 Pro replaces A19 — the graphics go from “5-core GPU with Neural Accelerators” to “7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators”, and the Neural Engine from “16-core Neural Engine” to “Dual 16-core Neural Engine”. Apple publishes no benchmark for either, so how much of that reaches a user depends entirely on the apps. Video playback goes from 30 hours to 31 — up 1 hour (3%) on Apple’s own measure. The display moves from 6.3″ to 7.6″, which is 80% more usable area.
Is the iPhone Duo worth upgrading to from the iPhone 17 for business use?
That depends on what the phones are used for. The iPhone Duo leads on executives and client-facing staff, international travel and roaming and replacing a second screen on the road. The iPhone 17 still leads on field and lone-worker teams, volume fleets and shared devices and one-handed, all-day carry. Which has better battery life, the iPhone Duo or the iPhone 17?

Can both be managed and enrolled the same way?
Yes. The iPhone Duo and the iPhone 17 both enrol through Apple Business Manager with automated device enrolment, take the same configuration profiles and are managed by whichever MDM you already run. What does differ for IT is the SIM, the unlock method and wired transfer — the iPhone Duo is the eSIM-only one, plus how long each keeps receiving iOS feature updates.
How long will each one keep getting iOS updates?
Apple does not publish a support end date for any iPhone. What history shows is roughly five to seven years of iOS releases from launch, which puts the iPhone 17 1 generation further through that window than the iPhone Duo. Plan a fleet on the older model's clock, not the newer one's.
Does the folding iPhone Duo make sense as a business phone?
It replaces two devices: folded it is a 5.4″ phone, open it is a 7.6″ screen — 175.4 cm² against 97.2 cm² on the iPhone 17.
