Apple’s first folding iPhone is not called the iPhone Fold — it is the iPhone Duo, and it is the only iPhone with two displays, the only one that takes an Apple Pencil, and the only current one that unlocks with Touch ID instead of Face ID. A phone that opens into a reading surface
Folded, the 5.4″ outer display is a normal phone — calls, messages, a boarding pass. Open, the 7.6″ inner display gives 175.4 cm² of screen, which is 50% more than the largest conventional iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Apple finishes the inner panel with nano-texture — the same anti-glare treatment it sells as an option on its displays — which matters more outdoors than any brightness figure.

Against the biggest conventional iPhone
One device, five ways of holding it
A hinge is only useful if the software uses it. These are Apple’s own images of the positions the iPhone Duo is designed around — folded as a phone, open as a reading surface, half-folded to stand on a desk or a tray table. The laptop and tent postures are the ones that change how a phone is used in a meeting: it stands up on its own, with no case or stand to carry.
Three decisions this phone forces, and one it does not
The folding screen is the headline. These are the differences that actually reach a service desk.
1. Touch ID, not Face ID
Both satisfy the same MDM passcode and biometric policies, and both back the same Apple Pay and keychain flows. What changes is the human part: enrolment instructions, shared-device handover, and whether staff wearing gloves or face coverings are better or worse off. For a mixed fleet, plan on writing two sets of onboarding notes.
2. eSIM only — there is no tray
Two active eSIMs and storage for eight or more profiles is a genuine advantage for staff who travel — a local data profile can be added without touching the corporate line. It is a blocker anywhere a network, a country or a corporate mobile contract still issues physical SIMs. Confirm eSIM provisioning with every carrier in your estate before the order, not after.
3. No Action button
Worth checking if your fleet maps the Action button to something operational — a scanner app, push-to-talk, a lone-worker check-in or a shortcut. On the Duo that mapping has to move to Camera Control, the Lock Screen or an on-screen control.
And one it does not: enrolment
The Duo enrols exactly like any other iPhone: same Apple Business Manager flow, same automated device enrolment, same configuration profiles, same MDM. Nothing in your management stack has to change to accept one.
Two batteries, and two different numbers
Apple quotes 44 hours of video playback on the outer display and 31 on the inner one — the only iPhone with two figures, because it has two screens and two batteries. Streamed video, closer to how a phone is really used, is 26 hours on the inner display. Fast charging reaches 50% in around 20 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter.

A two-camera system, and a camera under the screen
48MP Dual Fusion camera system — no dedicated telephoto, so the long end is a 2× optical-quality crop from the main sensor rather than a separate lens. Where the Duo is unusual is the front: a 12MP Center Stage camera on the outside, and an under-display FaceTime camera on the inside, so a video call can run on either panel. For site records, expenses and asset photographs it is more than enough; for a marketing team that bills for the footage, the Pro models still carry the longer optics, ProRes and Log.

Is the Apple folding iPhone called the iPhone Fold?
No. Apple calls it iPhone Duo. It sits above the iPhone 18 Pro in the line-up, with a 7.6-inch folding inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, and it is the only iPhone that folds.
How big is the iPhone Duo folded, and how big open?
Folded it is 84.1 × 117.8 × 11.3 mm; open it is 164.6 × 117.8 × 5.2 mm, and it weighs 254 g. For comparison the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 78 × 163.4 × 8.75 mm at 249 g — so folded the Duo is shorter and thicker, and open it is a different class of device.
Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?
No — it unlocks with Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor built into the side button. Every other current iPhone uses Face ID. The MDM passcode and biometric policies are the same either way, but shared-device handover, gloves and face coverings behave differently, and the enrolment instructions your service desk sends out have to change.
Can the iPhone Duo take a physical SIM?

Does it replace a tablet?
Open, it gives 175.4 cm² of usable screen against 116.7 cm² on the iPhone 18 Pro Max — and it takes Apple Pencil (USB-C), which no other iPhone does. For staff who read drawings, contracts or dashboards away from a desk, that removes a second device from the kit list. It does not replace a laptop.
How tough is it?
Apple rates it IP68 to a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529, with ceramic shield 2 front, 3x better scratch resistance and a titanium frame and hinge cover. That is the same water and dust rating as the non-folding models. A hinge is still a moving part, so for a site or warehouse fleet a conventional iPhone remains the safer specification.
