Head-to-head · every figure from Apple’s own specifications

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 17 Pro Max

The folding iPhone against a conventional one, on Apple’s own figures. 2 headline measures favour the iPhone Duo and 5 the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and 12 specifications differ outright. Written for the people who buy phones by the dozen rather than one at a time: what changed, what it changes about a rollout, and what it does not.

Bottom line. iPhone Duo suits executives and client-facing staff, international travel and roaming, replacing a second screen on the road. iPhone 17 Pro Max suits field and lone-worker teams, volume fleets and shared devices, marketing, site records and content, one-handed, all-day carry. Apple publishes no benchmark scores for either phone, so nothing here claims one is “faster”.

01 — What actually differs

12 specifications that are not the same

Everything below is a line Apple publishes for both phones. Anything the two share — and most of the specification is shared — is in the full table further down.

A20 Pro replaces A19 Pro — the graphics go from “6-core GPU with Neural Accelerators” to “7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators”, and the Neural Engine from “16-core Neural Engine” to “Dual 16-core Neural Engine”. Apple publishes no benchmark for either, so how much of that reaches a user depends entirely on the apps.
Video playback goes from 37 hours to 31 — down 6 hours (19%) on Apple’s own measure.
The display moves from 6.9″ to 7.6″, which is 50% more usable area.
Weight changes by 23 g (254 g against 231 g).
The frame changes: Titanium frame and hinge cover against Aluminium unibody.
Unlocking changes from Face ID to Touch ID — a policy and enrolment difference, not just a convenience one.
Rear camera system: 48MP Dual Fusion camera system against 48MP Pro Fusion camera system.
Longest optical zoom: 2× against 8×.
Front camera: 12MP Center Stage front camera against 18MP Center Stage front camera — the one every video call runs through.
iPhone Duo is eSIM-only — no physical SIM tray — while iPhone 17 Pro Max still takes a nano-SIM.
Apple lists a LiDAR scanner on the iPhone 17 Pro Max; its specification for the iPhone Duo does not name one.
Apple lists Apple Pencil (USB-C) support on the iPhone Duo only.

The measures that decide it

Each row is a figure Apple publishes for both. Bars show the split; the badge marks the larger number, which is not always the better buy — a lighter phone and a smaller screen are the same fact stated twice.

05 — Verdict

Which one, and why

Drawn from the measures above. Apple publishes no benchmark results for either phone, so nothing here claims one is faster than the other — only what each one is documented to do.

Choose the iPhone Duo if…

  • Screen size: 7.6″ against 6.9″.
  • Usable screen area: 175.4 cm² against 116.7 cm².
  • Fits best for executives and client-facing staff, international travel and roaming and replacing a second screen on the road — screen area and the camera every video call runs through.
  • eSIM only: no tray to lose, but every carrier in your estate has to support eSIM provisioning before it can be deployed.
  • Folds to a phone and opens to a tablet-sized screen, so one device covers both jobs on the road.

Choose the iPhone 17 Pro Max if…

  • Video playback: 37 hrs against 31 hrs.
  • Weight: 231 g against 254 g.
  • Thickness: 8.75 mm against 11.3 mm.
  • Longest optical zoom: 8× against 2×.
  • Front camera: 18 MP against 12 MP.
  • Fits best for field and lone-worker teams, volume fleets and shared devices, marketing, site records and content and one-handed, all-day carry — a full shift away from a charger with satellite SOS behind it.

08 — For whoever manages them

The differences that reach IT, not the user

Enrolment, SIM provisioning, unlock policy and the software clock — the things that decide whether a model can actually be rolled out, and the ones a spec sheet buries.

SIM and provisioning

iPhone DuoDual eSIM Two active eSIMs; stores eight or more eSIMs Supports advanced eSIM technology for more convenience and security (not compatible with physical SIM cards)
iPhone 17 Pro MaxDual SIM (two active eSIMs, or nano-SIM and eSIM) Dual eSIM support Supports advanced eSIM technology for more convenience and security

Both enrol the same way in Apple Business Manager; what differs is whether a physical SIM is an option when a carrier or a country is not eSIM-ready.

Unlock method

iPhone DuoTouch ID — Fingerprint sensor built into the side button
iPhone 17 Pro MaxFace ID — Enabled by TrueDepth technology in the Center Stage front camera

Face ID and Touch ID satisfy the same MDM passcode policies; the practical difference is gloves, masks and shared-device handover.

Water and dust

iPhone DuoRated IP68 (maximum depth of 6 metres up to 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529
iPhone 17 Pro MaxRated IP68 (maximum depth of 6 metres up to 30 minutes) under IEC standard 60529

Apple’s rating is tested in laboratory conditions and is not permanent — it is not a substitute for a rugged case on a site fleet.

Safety features

iPhone DuoEmergency SOS via satellite, Roadside Assistance via satellite, Crash Detection
iPhone 17 Pro MaxEmergency SOS via satellite, Roadside Assistance via satellite, Crash Detection

Satellite features are the reason many lone-worker policies now specify a recent iPhone rather than any smartphone.

Wired transfer

iPhone DuoUSB-C Supports USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s)
iPhone 17 Pro MaxUSB-C Supports USB 3 (up to 10Gb/s)

A 10Gb/s port matters where devices are imaged, backed up or evidence-collected over cable rather than over the air.

Wireless

10 — Questions

iPhone Duo vs iPhone 17 Pro Max, answered

What is the real difference between the iPhone Duo and the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

A20 Pro replaces A19 Pro — the graphics go from “6-core GPU with Neural Accelerators” to “7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators”, and the Neural Engine from “16-core Neural Engine” to “Dual 16-core Neural Engine”. Apple publishes no benchmark for either, so how much of that reaches a user depends entirely on the apps. Video playback goes from 37 hours to 31 — down 6 hours (19%) on Apple’s own measure. The display moves from 6.9″ to 7.6″, which is 50% more usable area.

Is the iPhone Duo worth upgrading to from the iPhone 17 Pro Max for business use?

That depends on what the phones are used for. The iPhone Duo leads on executives and client-facing staff, international travel and roaming and replacing a second screen on the road. The iPhone 17 Pro Max still leads on field and lone-worker teams, volume fleets and shared devices, marketing, site records and content and one-handed, all-day carry. Battery is the figure most fleets feel: 31 hours against 37 on Apple's own video-playback test.

Which has better battery life, the iPhone Duo or the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Apple quotes up to 31 hours of video playback for the iPhone Duo and up to 37 hours for the iPhone 17 Pro Max — a 19% difference on the same test. Streamed video, which is closer to real use, is 26 hours against 33.

Can both be managed and enrolled the same way?

Yes. Both are enrolled through Apple Business Manager with automated device enrolment and managed by whichever MDM you already run, and both take the same configuration profiles. The differences that affect IT are the SIM (one is eSIM-only), the unlock method (Touch ID against Face ID) and how long each will keep receiving iOS feature updates.

How long will each one keep getting iOS updates?

Apple does not publish a support end date for any iPhone. What history shows is roughly five to seven years of iOS releases from launch, which puts the iPhone 17 Pro Max 1 generation further through that window than the iPhone Duo. Plan a fleet on the older model's clock, not the newer one's.

Does the folding iPhone Duo make sense as a business phone?

It replaces two devices: folded it is a 5.4″ phone, open it is a 7.6″ screen — 175.4 cm² against 116.7 cm² on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. It unlocks with Touch ID rather than Face ID, it is eSIM-only, and at 254 g it is heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro Max's 231 g. For staff who read drawings, contracts or dashboards on the move it removes a tablet from the kit list; for a warehouse or a van fleet it does not.

Where these figures come from. Every specification on this page is taken from Apple’s own published material — iPhone Duo specifications and iPhone 17 Pro Max specifications, cross-checked against Apple’s compare tool, captured 12 September 2026. Screen areas and percentage differences are calculated from those figures. This is a specification comparison only: nothing here is a benchmark, a price or a statement about stock.
