Every refurbished-server calculator online is a refurbisher’s own asset, so it always concludes “buy refurbished” — and every vendor TCO tool always concludes “buy new”. Neither tells you the truth for your workload. This one does, because Servnet sells both new and certified refurbished. How much cheaper is a refurbished server than a new one?

For enterprise servers, refurbished typically runs 50–65% below new list (central ~56%), with storage arrays 45–60%, network switches 40–55% and memory/SSD 30–50% (Pro Disk Network). OEM-certified remanufactured — like Cisco Refresh — is 25–70% off but carries the same warranty as new. Grey-market "up to 90%" claims usually aren’t like-for-like once you match spec and warranty, so this tool uses the cited, conservative bands and lets you set your own figure.

When does a NEW server actually work out cheaper over 3–5 years?

When the refurbished discount is thin (under ~15% once spec-matched), when the workload needs latest-generation performance or current GPUs, or when high 24×7 utilisation and expensive electricity let a newer, more efficient generation claw back the upfront gap in energy. This calculator models that honestly and will tell you when new is the better buy — most refurbisher tools never do.

Do refurbished servers cost more to run?

A little — an older generation is typically ~10–30% less efficient per unit of work (about 21% for one generation, Phoronix). What is embodied vs use-phase carbon?

Embodied (or "made") carbon is emitted building the server; use-phase (or "run") carbon is emitted powering it.
