A little-known startup called Volta has emerged from stealth with Nvidia and Michael Dell as backers, a $2.4 billion valuation, and a claimed $10 billion deal to build an AI factory in Norway. What Volta actually announced
Volta says it has raised roughly $300 million across seed and Series A rounds, led by Andreessen Horowitz and Nvidia, with Michael Dell's family office also on the cap table, pushing its valuation to $2.4 billion. It describes itself as a vertically integrated AI infrastructure business that finances, builds and operates AI factories — its term for datacenters dedicated to training and running AI models — rather than just leasing racks the way rivals such as Nscale and CoreWeave do.
The centrepiece is a 133 MW Norwegian site being developed with cryptocurrency miner turned GPU cloud operator Bitdeer, expected to run Nvidia's Vera Rubin systems. Volta also claims a $10 billion strategic partnership with an unnamed 'AI lab' to build that facility — reported elsewhere to be Anthropic, said to be seeking six years of compute access. Neither Volta nor Anthropic would confirm details to The Register at the time of publication.
Why this matters for UK infrastructure buyers
The Norway project is explicitly the first entry in a pipeline Volta says exceeds 1 GW across North America and Europe. That scale, arriving alongside comparable Nordic builds from Nscale — including a 230 MW Narvik site contracted to Microsoft for 30,000 Nvidia Rubin GPUs, and a 30 MW expansion at Glomfjord — suggests the region is becoming a genuine alternative to US hyperscale campuses for training-grade capacity.
For buyers in the UK, that's a double-edged signal. More Nordic supply could ease the GPU allocation queues that have plagued 2025-26 procurement cycles, but it also means the capacity you're bidding for may sit behind long-term reservations from AI labs with deeper pockets and multi-year contracts already signed.

Volta says it will build using Nvidia's DSX reference architecture and tooling — covering design, simulation, construction and operation, including digital twins that model a facility before it's built. Founder and CEO Ricard Boada frames the ambition plainly: "Our ambition is to build The Utility of Compute so that compute works as reliably and invisibly as electricity, while being priced transparently and built to endure."
That pitch is attractive, but it concentrates risk.
