What Object First Ootbi is, and what it is not
Inside, a 2U Ootbi node is a server with a RAID 6 or RAID 60 disk array, an NVMe cache and a custom hardened Linux; the desktop Mini uses mirrored drives[src][src]. Veeam connects to it only as an S3 client, with a service point and an access key, and SSH is switched off once setup is done[src][src]. Ootbi currently runs S3 Object Lock in compliance mode only, according to Object First's Help Center[src]: the AWS-defined mode in which no user, including the root account, can delete a locked object version or shorten its retention[src].
It is not a deduplicating appliance. It stores Veeam's backup blocks at Veeam's standard block size with Veeam encryption left on[src], and although it speaks standard S3, the configuration guides in Object First's Help Center cover Veeam products: Backup & Replication, Backup for Microsoft 365 and Kasten[src][src].
Where Ootbi sits in a Veeam 3-2-1-1-0 design
Object First documents Ootbi as a primary Veeam repository, as the performance tier of a Scale-Out Backup Repository, or as its capacity tier behind another primary target[src]. It also supports Veeam's Smart Object Storage API, which gives Veeam real capacity reporting and lets it place backups evenly across SOBR extents[src][src]. How the Veeam integration works →

Get Object First Ootbi sized and quoted
- We size nodes from your source data, change rate, retention and immutability period, including the 10 days Veeam adds on top.
- We choose between one larger node and several smaller ones, against your backup window and growth.
- We check Veeam version, network ports and rack space before you order.
- We quote the appliances and Object First support together; ask us about Consumption if you would rather not buy outright.
Object First Ootbi: common questions
What is Object First Ootbi?
Ootbi (short for Out-of-the-Box Immutability) is an on-premises backup storage appliance built for Veeam. It runs Object First’s own hardened Linux, presents S3 object storage with Object Lock, and is added to Veeam Backup & Replication 12 or later as an S3-compatible repository. There is a 2U rack model from 18 to 432 TB a node and a desktop Ootbi Mini from 8 to 24 TB.
Did Veeam buy Object First?
Yes. Veeam’s own blog states that Veeam acquired Object First in January 2026, so Ootbi now sits in the same portfolio as Veeam’s software-defined Hardened Repository. Ootbi is still documented and supported by Object First, through its own Help Center and support line.
How large can an Ootbi cluster grow?
A cluster takes up to four nodes, and node capacities can be mixed. Four 432 TB nodes give 1.7 PB of usable immutable storage; four of the 18 to 216 TB models top out at 864 TB. Object First says capacities beyond 7 PB are reached with several clusters inside a Veeam Scale-Out Backup Repository. Ootbi Mini clusters take up to four Mini nodes, 96 TB.
Does Ootbi work with backup software other than Veeam?
Object First builds and documents Ootbi for Veeam: its Help Center has configuration guides for Veeam Backup & Replication v12 and v13, Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 and Veeam Kasten. Ootbi speaks standard S3, and its release notes mention compatibility with tools such as the AWS CLI and rclone, but Object First publishes no guide for any other backup product. If Veeam does not write your backups, a general-purpose S3 target with Object Lock is the more natural fit.
Is the backup data on Ootbi immutable straight away?
Yes, in a bucket created with versioning enabled. Ootbi currently runs S3 Object Lock in compliance mode only, with no governance option (Object First says governance mode is planned), and Object First says objects are immutable the moment they are written. Versioning and immutability are set when a bucket is created and cannot be switched off for that bucket afterwards. Veeam then decides how long each restore point is locked: at least the immutability period you set, and up to 10 days longer because of the block generation Veeam uses on S3-compatible storage.
What support comes with an Ootbi appliance?
Object First includes three years of service and support for labour and parts with each unit, with next-business-day replacement once a fault is diagnosed. Its support page targets a 1-hour response when Ootbi is down, 4 hours when it is degraded and 4 business hours, on a best-efforts basis, for general questions, and lists an EMEA number in the UK. On a CapEx purchase, updates and support run for a fixed term, generally up to five years.
Can Servnet supply Object First Ootbi in the UK?
Yes. We can supply and quote Ootbi 2U appliances, Ootbi Mini and multi-node clusters, sized from your source data, change rate, retention and immutability period. If you want the pay-per-use Consumption model, tell us on the form and we will confirm how it can be provided for you; Object First places those agreements through its partners.
