Object First Ootbi Mini
Immutable Veeam backups for sites without a rack

The Ootbi Mini puts Object First's immutable S3 storage in a tower that sits on a desk or a shelf, vertical or on its side. It is built for branches, small offices and edge sites that still want a fast local restore rather than relying on the cloud.

Overview

The Ootbi Mini in one paragraph

The Object First Ootbi Mini is the same Ootbi software in a smaller box: Object First describes it as delivering the same Zero Trust security and absolute immutability as the 2U appliance, for SMB, remote and branch offices and the edge[src][src].

Each Mini holds three SATA drives of the capacity you buy (8, 16 or 24 TB) in a mirrored RAID, boots from two 480 GB M.2 drives in RAID 1, and has a 480 GB SATA SSD cache[src]. It is managed through iDRAC9 (the 2U model also has a dedicated iDRAC port) and draws from a 500 W cabled power supply[src][src]. Object First says the Mini works standing up or lying flat[src].

Speed

How much an overnight window holds

At about 300 MB/s a node[src], the Mini is sized for small estates. The useful question is whether the first full and the nightly changes fit the time you have.
Hours to ingest a 12 TB first full backupA first full happens once; nightly incrementals after it are usually a few per cent of the protected data.Hours to ingest at the rated cluster speed10-hour backup window1 × Ootbi Mini~300 MB/s rated11 h2 × Ootbi Mini~600 MB/s, linear scaling5.6 h4 × Ootbi Mini~1.2 GB/s, linear scaling2.8 h1 × Ootbi 18 TB (2U)1 GB/s rated3.3 hA first full happens once; nightly incrementals after it are usually a few per cent of the protected data.
Worked example, not an Object First benchmark: a 12 TB first full backup at each configuration's rated ingest. Four Mini nodes assume the linear scaling Object First describes for Mini clusters[src]; the 18 TB 2U node is shown for scale.
Many sites

A Mini at every branch, watched from one screen

Object First pitches the Mini for distributed estates and pairs it with Fleet Manager, its cloud service that monitors every enrolled cluster from one dashboard[src][src].

Each site keeps its backups locally; Fleet Manager only receives telemetry over an outbound connection, needs no VPN and cannot create, alter or view backup data[src][src]. Site names are an example.

For a branch, the alternative is usually backing up straight to the cloud. Object First's argument for a local Mini is restore speed: on-premises backups restore faster than cloud-only services[src]. A local copy does not replace an offsite one, so most designs still send a second copy to the head office or to Veeam Data Cloud Vault. Fleet Manager and Honeypot →

Setting up

What a Mini needs on site

Network

10 Gb recommended, 1 Gb allowed

Connect both 10 Gb BASE-T ports where there is a 10 Gb switch, or both 1 GbE ports where there is not; both on the same subnet[src].
Addresses

Two interfaces and a cluster IP

The cluster IP is a virtual address on the same subnet[src], and it is the service point Veeam connects to[src].
Outbound

Port 443 and time

Outbound HTTPS for updates, support and telemetry; NTP on UDP 123 and NTS on TCP 4460[src].
Console

iDRAC or a local screen

Run setup through iDRAC or a VGA monitor and USB keyboard, then restrict iDRAC; it should never face the internet[src].
Password

15 characters minimum

The node and cluster password needs at least 15 characters with upper case, lower case, a digit and a symbol[src][src].
Physical

Lock it away

Object First's own hardening guide says to restrict physical access and keep appliances in a locked, ventilated room[src]. On a desktop box that matters more, not less.

FAQs

Object First Ootbi Mini: common questions

What is the Ootbi Mini?

The Ootbi Mini is Object First’s desktop tower appliance for small businesses, remote and branch offices and edge sites without a rack or server room. It runs the same software and immutability model as the 2U Ootbi, holds 8, 16 or 24 TB, and is added to Veeam the same way.

How fast is the Ootbi Mini?

Object First rates it at about 300 MB/s ingest and up to 20 concurrent Veeam Instant Recovery VMs per node. That is roughly a third of the 1 GB/s rated for the smallest 2U Ootbi, so a 10 to 12-hour overnight window lands roughly 11 to 13 TB on one Mini at the rated speed.

Can Ootbi Mini nodes be clustered?

Yes. Object First says the 8 to 24 TB models can be scaled to four nodes with any mix of Mini capacities, up to 96 TB usable and 80 Instant Recovery VMs per cluster. It publishes no mixed cluster of Mini and 2U nodes.

Does the Ootbi Mini need 10 Gb networking?

No, though it is recommended. Object First’s Mini placemat recommends the two 10 Gb BASE-T ports for backup traffic and allows the two 1 GbE ports instead where there is no 10 Gb switch. Both interfaces must be on the same subnet, and only one pair is used at a time.

Is the Ootbi Mini less secure than the 2U Ootbi?

Object First says it delivers the same Zero Trust security and absolute immutability as the 2U appliance: compliance-mode S3 Object Lock, the same hardened OS, and the Honeypot that release 1.7 built into every Object First appliance for customers with active support. What a desktop box changes is physical security: put it somewhere locked, because anyone who can carry it away can take the backups with it.

Can the Ootbi Mini be bought on the Consumption model?

The Mini datasheet lists both CapEx and Consumption-based subscription, with Consumption availability depending on region; Object First lists the USA, the European Union and the United Kingdom. Consumption agreements run through an Object First partner, so tell us which you want and we will confirm.
