Which servers are certified for both Windows Server 2025 and VMware ESXi 9?

We checked 334 Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant and Lenovo ThinkSystem server models against Broadcom's compatibility guide, Microsoft's Windows Server Catalog and each maker's own support matrix. Support falls away sharply with age, and for some models the official sources disagree.

90%
of current-generation models (2023 on) are certified for both: 98 of 109
51%
of the 2021–22 generation: 68 of 72 have ESXi 9, only 39 have Windows Server 2025

What counts as support in this study

ESXi 9: certified vs “confirm with vendor”

A model counts as ESXi 9 certified when it appears in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide for ESXi 9.0 or 9.1 without the “VCF Supported. Confirm w/Vendor” flag. Broadcom’s KB 428874 uses that flag for systems the server maker did not submit for certification: VMware supports its software, but hardware and firmware support is the maker’s call. We count those 40 listings separately.

Windows Server 2025: certified or supported

A model counts when Microsoft’s Windows Server Catalog lists it as certified for Windows Server 2025, or when the maker’s own matrix (Dell, HPE, Lenovo OSIG) lists it as supported. Where a maker’s own pages contradict each other we say so rather than pick a side.

A listing is not a guarantee

Support depends on the processor, BIOS, storage controller and network adapters too. Some models are supported only with certain processors; the dataset notes these. Use this study to shortlist, then check the exact configuration. The compatibility checker gives a verdict per processor family.

Scope: 334 rack, tower, blade, modular and edge server models. 228 vSAN ReadyNode, HCI and other appliance listings are in the downloadable dataset but not in the headline figures, and 10 listings that don’t map to a current model from these makers are excluded.

Key findings

What the official listings show

  • Current servers are covered. Every one of the 109 current-generation models is ESXi 9 certified, and 98 (89.9%) are also listed for Windows Server 2025. The 11 without Windows Server 2025 are GPU, liquid-cooled HPC or telecom-edge systems (XE7740, XE8640, XE9640, XE9680, XR8610t, XR8620t, DL110 Gen11, SC750 V4, SR680a V3, SR680a V4, SR780a V3).
  • The 2021–22 generation is where Windows Server 2025 drops away. 68 of its 72 models are ESXi 9 certified, but only 39 are listed for Windows Server 2025. By maker: Dell 15G 10 of 25, HPE Gen10 Plus 16 of 21, Lenovo V2 11 of 26.
  • For 2017–20 servers the makers took different paths. HPE certified 17 of 22 Gen10 models for ESXi 9 and 12 for both. Dell certified 6 of 30 14G models (M640 VRTX, R240, R340, R6415, T140, T340); another 19 are listed only as “confirm with vendor”. Lenovo certified 2 of 33 V1 models, with 21 listed as “confirm with vendor”.
  • 40 of the 259 ESXi 9 listings (15%) are “confirm with vendor”, all of them Dell 14G or Lenovo V1-class systems. Counting only maker-certified listings, 65.6% of models have ESXi 9, not 78%.
  • None of the 43 models launched before 2017 (Dell 13G, HPE Gen9, Lenovo System x and older ThinkServer) is listed for ESXi 9 or Windows Server 2025.

“Both” means ESXi 9 certified by the maker and Windows Server 2025 certified or supported. “Unassigned” covers HPE Superdome, Edgeline, Cray and Alletra storage servers, Dell DSS and one Lenovo WenTian model, which sit outside the numbered generations.

Where sources disagree

When the maker’s own documents contradict each other

We report these as found rather than choose a side. If one of these servers matters to you, ask the maker which statement applies.
Dell 14G (R640, R740, R740xd)

Dell’s Windows Server matrix has no Windows Server 2025 column for 14th generation, and Dell’s per-model support pages stop at Windows Server 2022. But the R640/R740 BIOS 2.22.2 release notes mention Windows Server 2025 support, and Microsoft’s catalog lists Dell’s AX-640 and AX-740XD, which run on R640 and R740xd hardware, as certified for Windows Server 2025. We record 14G as “not listed”, following Dell’s matrix.

Dell 15G: 8 models

For C6520, C6525, R650xs, R750xa, R750xs, R7515, XR11, XR12, Dell’s Windows Server matrix gives no Windows Server 2025 support and Microsoft’s catalog has no certification, but Dell’s per-model Supported OS page lists Windows Server 2025. These are shown as “sources disagree” and not counted as supported.

Processor-dependent support

30 models are listed for Windows Server 2025 with a processor condition: for example, 1st Gen Xeon Scalable (Skylake) parts that Microsoft’s Windows Server processor list doesn’t name, or Xeon 6 E-core and Xeon CPU Max configurations that Dell and HPE exclude. The condition is shown against each model in the table below.

For planning

What this means for upgrade plans

  • Dates to plan around: Windows Server 2022 leaves mainstream support on 13 October 2026 (Microsoft). ESXi 8.0 reaches end of general support on 11 October 2027, and VCF / ESX 9.0 on 12 November 2027 (Broadcom).
  • 2021–22 servers: most can move to ESXi 9, but check Windows Server 2025 model by model; fewer than half of Dell 15G and Lenovo V2 models are listed.
  • 2017–20 servers on “confirm with vendor”: VMware will support the software, but hardware and firmware issues go to the maker, which hasn’t certified the combination. Get the maker’s position in writing before relying on it in production.
  • Older servers: nothing launched before 2017 in this study is listed for either platform. See the server end-of-life checker for support dates.
Method

How the dataset was built

How these figures were produced

  • ESXi: every Dell, HPE and Lenovo server listing in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide (server program), fetched 2026-09-14, with each listing's releases and its "VCF Supported. Confirm w/Vendor" field. A model counts as ESXi 9 certified when at least one ESXi 9.0 or 9.1 listing is not flagged.
  • Windows Server: Dell's Windows Server OS support matrix for PowerEdge, HPE's Windows Server support matrix, Lenovo's OS Interoperability Guide (OSIG) export, and a full pull of Dell, HPE and Lenovo products in Microsoft's Windows Server Catalog, including the hardware each Windows Server 2025 submission was tested on.
  • Status: "certified" means a Windows Server Catalog certification for that model; "supported" means the maker's matrix lists it without a catalog certification; "sources disagree" means the maker's own documents conflict. Where a maker does not list a model at all, it is "not listed", not "not supported".
  • Models: listings were matched to one row per product (duplicates merged, keeping the best-sourced status) and grouped into the makers' own generations. vSAN ReadyNode, HCI and other appliance listings are classed separately.
  • Checks: an independent verifier re-checked every server row against the live sources (ESXi listing and Windows Server 2025 status matched on all rows), opened Broadcom detail pages in a browser to confirm the confirm-with-vendor flag, and flagged conflicts, which are reported above. The published figures are recomputed from the CSV by a separate script before release.
  • Limits: listings change. This is a snapshot from September 2026, and a listing covers the tested configuration, not every option a server can be ordered with.

FAQ

Questions

Which servers support Windows Server 2025?

Of the 334 Dell, HPE and Lenovo server models in this study, 172 (51.5%) are certified in Microsoft's Windows Server Catalog or listed as supported in the maker's own Windows Server matrix. Support is near-complete for the current generation (Dell 16G/17G, HPE Gen11/Gen12, Lenovo V3/V4) and patchy for the 2021–22 generation: 39 of 72 models. No model launched before 2017 in this study is listed.

Which servers are supported by VMware ESXi 9?

259 of 334 models (78%) appear in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide for ESXi 9.0 or 9.1. 40 of those listings carry Broadcom's "VCF Supported. Confirm w/Vendor" flag, which Broadcom's KB 428874 uses for systems the server maker did not submit for certification. Counting only maker-certified listings, the figure is 219 (65.6%).

Does the Dell PowerEdge R740 support Windows Server 2025 or ESXi 9?

Dell's sources disagree. Dell's Windows Server support matrix has no Windows Server 2025 column for 14th-generation servers and Dell's R740 support page stops at Windows Server 2022, yet the R640/R740 BIOS 2.22.2 release notes mention Windows Server 2025 support, and Microsoft's catalog lists Dell's AX-640 and AX-740XD (R640 and R740xd hardware) as certified for Windows Server 2025. For ESXi 9, the R740 appears in Broadcom's guide only as "confirm with vendor", and Dell's own ESXi 9.x matrix starts at 15th generation. Check with Dell before planning either upgrade.

What does "VCF Supported. Confirm w/Vendor" mean?

It is a flag in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide. Broadcom KB 428874 explains that VMware supports its software on these systems but the server maker did not submit them for ESXi 9 certification, so hardware, BIOS and firmware support is the maker's decision. In this study those listings are counted separately from maker-certified ones.

Is a listing a guarantee that my server will work?

No. Support also depends on the processor, firmware, storage controller, network adapters and BIOS version. Some models are listed only for certain processors (the dataset notes these). Use the listing to shortlist, then check the exact configuration against the maker's documentation.

Can I reuse this data?

Yes. The dataset and analysis are free to reuse under CC BY 4.0, crediting "Servnet Windows Server 2025 and ESXi 9 Server Support Study 2026". The CSV and JSON downloads are linked in the method section.
