About the Cisco ASA 5516-X / 5525-X / 5545-X
The Cisco ASA 5516-X, ASA 5525-X, and ASA 5545-X were enterprise-grade stateful firewalls that represented the upper range of the ASA 5500-X product family. These 1U rack-mount appliances were widely deployed as internet perimeter firewalls, VPN concentrators, and data centre edge security devices for medium-to-large enterprises throughout the 2010s.
With FirePOWER Services enabled, these appliances could deliver NGIPS inspection, application visibility and control (AVC), URL filtering, and advanced malware protection — making them competitive NGFW appliances for their time. The ASA 5545-X could deliver up to 3 Gbps of stateful inspection and supported active/active high availability clustering.
Cisco has announced end-of-sale for all ASA 5500-X Series appliances. The recommended migration targets are: Cisco Firepower 1140 for ASA 5516-X customers, Firepower 2110 for ASA 5525-X, and Firepower 2130 for ASA 5545-X — all delivering significantly higher NGFW throughput, integrated FTD software without the complexity of a separate module, and modern Cisco Defense Orchestrator cloud management.
