The HPE Nimble Storage HF40 is the best price-performance model in HPE's Adaptive Flash Array (HF series) family — designed for organisations that need enterprise-grade storage performance and resilience without the cost premium of all-flash. By combining large-capacity HDD storage with a tiered SSD cache and inline always-on deduplication, the HF40 delivers flash-like performance for active datasets at a fraction of the all-flash cost per TB.
The HF series introduced a critical innovation in hybrid storage: inline always-on variable block deduplication. Unlike competing hybrid arrays that run deduplication as a background post-process, the HF40 deduplicates all data as it is written — preventing redundant data from consuming either SSD cache or HDD capacity. This makes the HF40 uniquely efficient for backup, secondary storage, and mixed primary workloads where deduplication ratios are high.
The adaptive caching architecture continuously analyses access patterns and automatically promotes frequently-accessed data to SSD cache while demoting cold data to HDD. Write I/O is always absorbed by SSD cache first, eliminating rotational latency from the write path. The result is flash-like write performance and sub-ms reads for hot data, with HDD economics for the full dataset.
With 6 expansion shelves, the HF40 scales to 504 TB of raw HDD capacity plus 48 TB of SSD cache — delivering approximately 2,030 TB of effective capacity with 5:1 data reduction. The scale-out architecture supports four arrays managed as a single namespace for configurations up to 20 PB effective.
