IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 (V5010 / V5020 / V5030) end of life

Every IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 control enclosure, whether a V5010, V5020 or V5030, reached 'Transition to End of Support Services' on 31 December 2023, according to IBM's lifecycle pages. The 12F, 24F and 92F expansion enclosures attached to them were given two more years, to 31 December 2025, under IBM letter AD24-0701. Both dates have passed, and IBM's interoperability matrix supports each controller only up to a set Spectrum Virtualize level: V8.2.1 for the V5010 and V5020, V8.3.1 for the V5030.

IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 (V5010 / V5020 / V5030) support dates

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 (V5010 / V5020 / V5030) stands today

IBM dates the V5000 Gen2 by machine type-model, and all twelve control-enclosure MTMs (2077/2078-112, -124, -212, -224, -312 and -324) share one history: general availability on 4 March 2016, withdrawal from market on 9 July 2019 and the end-of-support transition on 31 December 2023 under letter 77703. The letter's page on ibm.com is a dead link, so ask IBM what, if anything, still applies to your controllers. The shelves ran to a different timetable: the 12F, 24F and 92F left the market on 11 February 2020, and AD24-0701 (published 30 July 2024) set their end of support at 31 December 2025, with limited maintenance under the Hardware Service Extension section of a client's IBM terms continuing 'if available' and no term stated.

Finding the date for your own system starts at the enclosure label. The machine type also tells you the original warranty: 2077 models carried one year and 2078 models three, with the model list otherwise the same. Search the full MTM, such as 2078-324, in IBM Product Lifecycle, and look up each expansion enclosure on its own, because a V5030 with 92F drawers attached has two different dates. IBM notes on those pages that 'Announcement letter dates are US only'.

Finding the date for your own unit

IBM publishes one date per machine type-model, not per serial. Read the MTM from the enclosure label (for example 2078-324; 2077 means a 1-year warranty and 2078 a 3-year warranty) and search for it in IBM Product Lifecycle at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/lifecycle/. Look up control and expansion enclosures separately because their dates differ: control enclosures 31-Dec-2023, 12F/24F/92F expansions 31-Dec-2025. The lifecycle pages note that 'Announcement letter dates are US only'.

What still works after IBM support ends

Software is capped too. IBM's hardware interoperability matrix supports the V5010 (-112/-124) and V5020 (-212/-224) up to Spectrum Virtualize V8.2.1 and not on V8.3 or later, and the V5030 (-312/-324) up to V8.3.1 and not on V8.4.0 or later; the 12F, 24F and 92F expansions are supported up to V8.5.0 and not on V8.5.1 or later. IBM's lifecycle entry for 'IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for Storwize V5030' version 8.2.1 (PID 5639-SV7) shows 'Transition to Extended/Sustained or End of Support' on 30 September 2022 and 'Completion of Extended, Sustained, Extension availability' on 30 September 2024.

Downloads are a separate matter. Fix Central offers System Storage machine code to IBM machines that are under warranty or covered by an IBM hardware maintenance service agreement, allowing some exceptions, and whether the 2077 and 2078 types are among them cannot be confirmed without signing in. IBM's Redbook adds that the Call Home function can be used with an IBM maintenance contract or within the warranty period, so a V5000 Gen2 on third-party cover needs its alerting moved to SNMP, syslog or email sent to your own team.

  • Code ceilings in IBM's hardware interoperability matrix: V5010 (2077/2078-112/124) and V5020 (-212/224) control enclosures are supported up to Spectrum Virtualize V8.2.1 and not on V8.3 or later. V5030 (2077/2078-312/324) is supported up to V8.3.1 and not on V8.4.0 or later. The 12F/24F/92F expansion enclosures are supported up to V8.5.0 and not on V8.5.1 or later. (ibm.com)
  • IBM Fix Central: 'Machine Code updates for Power Systems and System Storage are available for IBM machines that are under warranty or an IBM hardware maintenance service agreement. Some exceptions apply.' Whether these machine types are among the exceptions could not be checked without signing in. (ibm.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 (V5010 / V5020 / V5030)

Each system starts with a 2U control enclosure holding two node canisters and 12 x 3.5-inch (xx12) or 24 x 2.5-inch (xx24) drives, and the canisters separate the models: the V5010 has a 2-core Broadwell-DE Celeron at 1.2 GHz and 16 GB of cache, the V5020 a 2-core Broadwell-DE Xeon at 2.2 GHz with 16 or 32 GB, and the V5030 a 6-core Broadwell-DE Xeon at 1.9 GHz with 32 or 64 GB, its compression licensed with 64 GB only. Standard iSCSI is 1 GbE on the V5010 and V5020 and 10 GbE on the V5030, the V5020 adds standard 12 Gb SAS host ports, and optional cards provide 16 Gb FC, 12 Gb SAS or 10 GbE optical iSCSI/FCoE.

Shelves set the scale of the contract. The V5010 and V5020 take one chain of up to 10 expansion enclosures and 392 drives, while a V5030 takes up to 20 expansions per control enclosure, and two clustered V5030 control enclosures reach 40 expansions and 1,520 drives. Expansions come as the 2U 12F and 24F or the 5U 92-drive 92F. List every enclosure by MTM and serial, with drive types, canister cache and host cards, as the basis for storage and SAN maintenance and for a quote through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 (V5010 / V5020 / V5030)?

Keeping a V5000 Gen2 in service is a reasonable choice where it holds data with a planned exit date, runs a code level the business accepts as final, and has its alerting redirected away from Call Home. Because both the controllers and the shelves are past IBM's dates, the cover has to treat them as one estate. Independent cover, outlined under IBM third-party maintenance, generally means diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits once vendor support has ended, but it does not lift the code ceiling.

The argument for replacement is the frozen software: V8.2.1 on the V5010 and V5020, V8.3.1 on the V5030, and extended availability for the V5030's 8.2.1 software completed on 30 September 2024. IBM's named replacements, the Storwize V5010E (2072-212/-224) for the V5010, the V5030E (2072-312/-324) for the V5020 and the all-flash V5100 (2077/2078-AF4) for the V5030, reached their own end of support on 31 December 2025, so a like-for-like step would land on hardware already past IBM support. For the 2072 models AD24-0701 names the FlashSystem 5015 and 5045 (4680), and for the shelves FlashSystem 5200 expansions (4662-12G/24G/92G).

  • IBM's Redbook says: 'You can use the Call Home function if you have a maintenance contract with IBM or if the IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 is within the warranty period.' On a third-party contract, plan alerting through SNMP, syslog or email to your own team. (redbooks.ibm.com)
  • IBM's lifecycle entry for 'IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for Storwize V5030', version 8.2.1 (PID 5639-SV7), shows 'Transition to Extended/Sustained or End of Support' on 30-Sep-2022 and 'Completion of Extended, Sustained, Extension availability' on 30-Sep-2024. (ibm.com)
  • Letter AD24-0701 (scope: the 2077/2078-12F/24F/92F expansion enclosures) names FlashSystem 5200 expansions (4662-12G/24G/92G) as replacements. It says that after EOS, 'If available, clients will continue to receive limited hardware maintenance service as described in the "Hardware Service Extension" section of your terms with IBM'. No term is stated. (ibm.com)
  • IBM's V5000 interoperability matrix identifies 2077-AF4 (the replacement IBM names for the V5030) as 'IBM Storwize V5100 (3rd generation) ... (All Flash)'. (ibm.com)
  • The IBM FlashSystem 5100 Model 4H4 supports attaching and intermixing existing Storwize V5000 12F/24F/92F expansion enclosures. This matters for migrations that reuse shelves, but those expansions themselves left IBM support on 31-Dec-2025. (redbooks.ibm.com)

This second generation followed the Gen1 2077/2078-12C and -24C, and IBM's interoperability matrix calls the 2077-AF4 the 'IBM Storwize V5100 (3rd generation)'. The closest practical link is the FlashSystem 5030 and 5100: IBM's Redbook says the FlashSystem 5100 Model 4H4 supports attaching and intermixing existing V5000 12F, 24F and 92F expansions, useful when a migration reuses shelves, although those shelves left IBM support at the end of 2025. Questions people ask about the IBM Storwize V5000 Gen2 (V5010 / V5020 / V5030)

Is the Storwize V5030 end of life?

IBM's lifecycle pages show the V5030 control enclosures (2077/2078-312 and -324) reaching 'Transition to End of Support Services' on 31 December 2023, the same date as the V5010 and V5020. Their withdrawal from market dates back to 9 July 2019, and their 12F, 24F and 92F expansions followed into end of support on 31 December 2025.

When did IBM stop supporting V5000 Gen2 expansion enclosures?

The 2077/2078-12F, -24F and -92F expansions reached end of support on 31 December 2025, two years after the control enclosures, under letter AD24-0701. The letter says limited maintenance under the Hardware Service Extension section of IBM's terms continues 'if available', and it states no term.

What is the highest code level IBM supports on a Storwize V5010 or V5020?

IBM's hardware interoperability matrix supports the V5010 and V5020 control enclosures up to Spectrum Virtualize V8.2.1, and not on V8.3 or later. The V5030 goes one step further, to V8.3.1. Downloads through Fix Central are tied to warranty or an IBM hardware maintenance agreement, with some exceptions.

What replaced the Storwize V5000 Gen2?

IBM names a replacement per model: the V5010E for the V5010, the V5030E for the V5020, and the all-flash Storwize V5100 for the V5030. All of those reached end of support on 31 December 2025, and for the 2072-based V5010E and V5030E IBM names the FlashSystem 5015 and 5045.

Can I get third-party maintenance for a Storwize V5000 Gen2?

Independent maintainers typically handle fault diagnosis, replacement parts and on-site engineers for arrays past their vendor's dates. For a V5000 Gen2, list each control and expansion enclosure by MTM with its canister cache and host cards, and plan alerting that does not rely on Call Home. A quote can be requested once that list is ready.
