The Cisco Catalyst 9400 Series is a family of modular chassis-based campus distribution and core switches spanning three chassis sizes: the 4-slot C9404R, 7-slot C9407R, and 10-slot C9410R. The modular design allows line cards to be mixed and matched — choosing from high-density GE access cards, 10G uplink cards, 40G or 100G cards, and PoE/UPOE+ variants — providing full flexibility to build the exact campus distribution topology required.
All Catalyst 9400 chassis support redundant supervisor modules in active/standby pairs — ensuring that supervisor failure does not interrupt campus traffic. Line card modules, power supplies, and fan trays are all hot-swappable and field-replaceable, enabling true non-disruptive operations in campus environments where downtime is unacceptable.
The Catalyst 9400 is built on Cisco's Uadp 2.0 programmable ASIC across all line cards — enabling new forwarding features and security capabilities to be delivered via software updates without hardware replacement. This protects the investment over the 10+ year lifecycle typical of campus distribution and core switches.
In a Cisco DNA Center SD-Access deployment, the 9400 serves as the distribution node — implementing automated VXLAN fabric policies, SGT-based micro-segmentation, and Layer 3 routing between access layer fabric edges and the campus core.
