With 2.4 Tbps of non-blocking switching capacity, it aggregates multiple Catalyst 9300 or 9400 access/distribution switches over 25G uplinks, and connects to the campus core or data centre over 100G.
StackWise Virtual allows two Catalyst 9500-48Y4C switches to be paired as a single logical chassis — providing active/active redundancy, simplified single-IP management, and cross-switch EtherChannel (LAG) for maximum resilience. This is Cisco's modern equivalent of the classic VSS (Virtual Switching System) technology, delivering dual-switch high availability without the complexity and cost of chassis-based solutions.
In Cisco DNA Center SD-Access deployments, the C9500-48Y4C serves as the SD-Access Border or Transit node — connecting the campus fabric (built on Catalyst 9300/9200 fabric edge nodes) to the data centre or WAN. This position in the architecture requires high throughput and 100G uplinks, both of which the 9500-48Y4C provides natively.
The C9500-48Y4C complements the Catalyst 9500-32C — while the 9500-32C focuses on 32 × 100G connectivity for data centre spine, the 9500-48Y4C provides higher port density at 25G for campus aggregation tiers where 100G per connection would be overprovisioned. Both models run the same IOS-XE software and integrate identically with DNA Center.
