The Cisco Catalyst 9600 Series represents Cisco's most advanced campus core switching platform — a modular chassis-based system designed for the largest enterprise campuses, university networks, and government deployments requiring petabit-scale aggregation and absolute resilience. Available in 6-slot (C9606R) and 10-slot (C9610R) configurations, the 9600 accepts a wide range of line cards covering 100G and 400G interfaces.

The 9600's modular line card architecture allows the same chassis to evolve from 100G to 400G as the network grows — protecting the significant investment in chassis, supervisors, and power infrastructure while enabling incremental throughput and port density upgrades. Line cards, power supplies, fan trays, and supervisor modules are all hot-swappable, ensuring true non-disruptive operations at the campus core.

In Cisco DNA Center SD-Access deployments, the Catalyst 9600 serves as the campus core node — sitting above the Catalyst 9400 distribution layer and connecting multiple distribution blocks, the data centre fabric, and WAN edge routers. All traffic crossing between campus fabric VNIs passes through the 9600, making its performance, availability, and security capabilities critical to the overall network design.

The Catalyst 9600 runs Cisco IOS-XE with the same programmability model as the 9300, 9400, and 9500 — enabling consistent automation via Ansible, Terraform, Cisco NSO, and DNA Center across the entire campus fabric. Hardware MACsec on all line card ports ensures encrypted inter-switch links from access through distribution to core, meeting the strictest data-in-transit security requirements.
