Key Features

Everything you need in one device

🏗️

Data Centre Spine

Purpose-built as a spine switch in Cisco's spine-leaf data centre architecture — connecting all leaf nodes via 100G QSFP28 links in a full-mesh fabric.

36 × 100G Ports

36 × 100G QSFP28 ports with breakout support (4 × 25G per port) — enabling 144 × 25G leaf connections from a single 1U spine switch.

🌐

Cisco ACI Spine

Operates as an ACI spine with APIC policy — automatically establishing fabric paths to all leaf nodes and providing distributed anycast routing at scale.

🔀

VXLAN BGP EVPN Spine

In NX-OS mode, acts as a VXLAN BGP EVPN route reflector for the spine — propagating L2/L3 MAC/IP routes between all leaf nodes without full-mesh iBGP.

🔒

MACsec All Ports

Hardware MACsec on all 36 × 100G ports secures all spine-to-leaf inter-switch links — ensuring encrypted data centre fabric traffic.

📊

5.4 Bpps Forwarding

5.4 billion packets per second forwarding rate ensures the spine handles peak east-west traffic storms without packet loss.

🔧

Programmable NX-OS

Full NX-OS programmability via Python, Ansible, NETCONF, and REST API — enabling automation of spine provisioning and policy management.

About the Cisco Nexus 9300 — N9K-C9336C-FX2

The Cisco Nexus N9K-C9336C-FX2 is one of the most widely deployed data centre spine switches in enterprise and service provider networks — a 1U fixed-configuration switch delivering 36 × 100G QSFP28 ports with 7.2 Tbps of non-blocking switching capacity. In a standard spine-leaf data centre architecture, a pair of N9K-C9336C-FX2 spine switches connects to every leaf switch in the fabric — providing equal-cost multi-path (ECMP) routing for maximum bandwidth and resilience.

Each of the 36 × 100G QSFP28 ports supports cable breakout to 4 × 25G, meaning a single spine switch can support up to 144 × 25G leaf uplinks — providing significant port density for growing fabrics without requiring modular chassis spine switches. This makes the N9K-C9336C-FX2 cost-effective for medium-to-large data centres where a pair of fixed-configuration spine switches is preferred over modular Nexus 9500 chassis.

In Cisco ACI fabric mode, the N9K-C9336C-FX2 registers with the APIC cluster as a spine node — automatically establishing Inter-Site and Multi-Pod fabric paths, propagating endpoint group policies from leaf to leaf, and providing anycast IP routing across the fabric. In NX-OS standalone mode with VXLAN BGP EVPN, the spine acts as a route reflector for the BGP EVPN control plane — distributing MAC/IP routes from all leaf nodes to all other leaf nodes without requiring a full mesh of direct BGP peerings.

MACsec hardware encryption on all 36 × 100G ports ensures that all spine-to-leaf inter-switch links are encrypted at Layer 2, protecting data centre traffic from eavesdropping within the fabric. Rich streaming telemetry provides real-time visibility into fabric health, traffic flows, and latency — essential for capacity planning and proactive anomaly detection in mission-critical data centres.
