Where the IBM Power Systems POWER9 scale-out (S914 / S922 / S924) stands today
For the A models, IBM's notice spells out the meaning: 'After End of Standard Service, IBM no longer provides preventive service, new updates or fixes, or development of new machine code updates, patches, or fixes (including security fixes).' The lifecycle pages record the same date as 'Transition to End of Support Services', and the notice and AD25-0134 (published 28 January 2025) apply it to three more MTMs, the H922 (9223-22H), H924 (9223-42H) and L922 (9008-22L). The A models reached general availability on 20 March 2018 and were withdrawn from market on 29 January 2021.
The G models arrived on 24 July 2020 and left the market in 2023, on 9 May for the S914 (9009-41G) and 20 October for the S922 (9009-22G) and S924 (9009-42G). Their lifecycle pages, last updated in February 2026, show no end-of-support date and AD25-0134 omits them, so the January 2026 date should not be quoted for a G model; recheck the page for your MTM before planning. For any unit, look up the MTM from the system label in IBM Product Lifecycle and confirm the UK date with IBM, as the pages say 'Announcement letter dates are US only'.
Read the machine type-model from the system label (9009-22A vs 9009-22G matters). Search for it in IBM Product Lifecycle at https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/lifecycle/; each MTM has its own page with GA, withdrawn-from-market and 'Transition to End of Support Services' dates. The pages note that 'Announcement letter dates are US only', so confirm the UK date with IBM. Firmware eligibility is set per server by its Update Access Key (initial expiry tied to warranty), which is renewed through HMC or ASMI using keys from IBM's key management website.
What still works after IBM support ends
For the six listed MTMs, IBM's continuing option is Hardware Service Extension (HWSE; 'Hardware Support Extension' in the notice), which AD25-0134 says continues as limited hardware maintenance, without lapse in coverage, if available. The notice reserves to it IBM certified parts 'based on availability', per-call service for clients who keep service with IBM, 'the latest IBM certified firmware and machine code', usage and known-defect information, and proactive notifications of product issues and security exposures. Under IBM's current terms (Z126-8668-07, section 9.3) the coverage period is set per Transaction Document with no maximum stated, on-site repair is 'subject to the availability of repair parts and skilled resources', and IBM 'may withdraw HWSE for any Machine on 30 days' written notice'.
IBM develops no new code under HWSE. Under the same terms IBM will 'determine if an applicable resolution exists, which may include existing patches or workarounds', but it rules out developing any new machine code updates, patches or fixes, security fixes included. Downloads still depend on Fix Central's warranty-or-maintenance-agreement rule for Power Systems, which has some exceptions, and on the server's update access key: firmware with a GA date after the key's expiry (initially tied to the warranty) is not applied, and the key is renewed through the HMC or ASMI.
- IBM's notice says: 'After End of Standard Service, IBM no longer provides preventive service, new updates or fixes, or development of new machine code updates, patches, or fixes (including security fixes).' This applies to the six listed A/H/L models. (public.dhe.ibm.com)
- Update Access Key gate: 'POWER8 (and later) servers' check an update access key whose initial expiry is tied to the product warranty. System firmware whose GA date is after the key's expiry will not be applied. The key is renewed via HMC or ASMI, using keys from IBM's key management website. (public.dhe.ibm.com)
- Under Hardware Service Extension, IBM's TLS terms (Z126-8668-07, section 9.3) say IBM will 'determine if an applicable resolution exists, which may include existing patches or workarounds'. They exclude '(4) development of any new machine code updates, patches, or fixes (including those designed to address security)'. (ibm.com)
- IBM Fix Central: 'Machine Code updates for Power Systems and System Storage are available for IBM machines that are under warranty or an IBM hardware maintenance service agreement. Some exceptions apply.' (ibm.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- IBM Hardware Service Extension (HWSE), called 'Hardware Support Extension' in IBM's 12-Sep-2024 Power9 notice — Offered for the six Power9 MTMs after End of Standard Service on 31-Jan-2026; AD25-0134 qualifies this as 'if available'. Under terms Z126-8668-07 s.9.3 it covers remote problem determination and on-site hardware repair, subject to parts and skilled-resource availability, plus existing patches or workarounds. It excludes preventive service, engineering change management and new machine code or security fixes. The coverage period is set per Transaction Document with no maximum stated, and IBM may withdraw HWSE on 30 days' written notice. Confirm availability and price with IBM. (ibm.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the IBM Power Systems POWER9 scale-out (S914 / S922 / S924)
The S922 packs one or two POWER9 processors (4, 8 or 10 cores) into 2U, with eight SFF-3 bays and two 1400 W AC supplies, one of them redundant. The S924 is a 4U rack server with up to two processors of 8, 10, 11 or 12 cores and four 1400 W supplies, two required and two redundant. The S914 has one processor of 4, 6 or 8 cores (8-core in rack form only) and runs two 1400 W supplies as a 4U rack server or four 900 W supplies as a tower. Its DDR4 ECC memory tops out at 1,024 GB on 8-64 GB DIMMs, against 4 TB with two processors on the S922 and S924.
The S914 and S924 take either 12 SFF-3 bays plus an RDX bay or 18 SFF-3 bays with dual IOA write cache; EXP12SX and EXP24SX drawers are optional, and up to two PCIe3 NVMe carrier cards take M.2 modules. PCIe Gen4 x16/x8 slots with CAPI sit alongside Gen3 x8 slots, with one slot taken by the required base LAN adapter, and an EnergyScale service processor provides two 1 GbE RJ45 HMC ports and one RJ45 system port. With the MTM suffix, drive cage, drawers and supply type recorded per server, a quote for server third-party maintenance can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the IBM Power Systems POWER9 scale-out (S914 / S922 / S924)?
For a G-model server, whose lifecycle page lists no end-of-support date, the first step is to ask IBM what service is available for it. For an A-model machine, keeping it suits a contained workload whose owner accepts that no new security fixes will be developed, and the choice then lies between HWSE, which IBM can withdraw at 30 days' notice and whose on-site repair hinges on parts and skilled staff being available, and an alternative to IBM hardware maintenance: typically diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers from a third party once the vendor's standard service has ended.
Refresh is the stronger answer where an A model runs exposed or regulated workloads, since IBM now develops no new machine code or security fixes for it and HWSE excludes that work. IBM's notice names Power10 replacements: the Power S1022 or S1022s for the S922, the S1014 or S1012 for the S914, and the S1024 for the S924. It adds that any remaining prepaid value of a current IBM maintenance contract can be applied to the purchase of new systems once the customer has migrated.
- SCOPE: IBM's Power9 end-of-standard-service notice lists only 9009-22A, 9009-41A, 9009-42A, 9223-22H, 9223-42H and 9008-22L. A 9009-22G, 9009-41G or 9009-42G (2020 refresh) has no IBM end-of-support date on its lifecycle page, so check the model suffix before quoting 31-Jan-2026. (public.dhe.ibm.com)
- IBM's notice lists what is available only with an 'IBM Hardware Support Extension': IBM certified parts 'based on availability'; per-call service limited to clients who keep service with IBM; 'the latest IBM certified firmware and machine code'; access to usage and known-defect information; and proactive notifications of product issues and security exposures. The notice points to the 'Hardware Support Extension' in section 1.3.1 of IBM terms Z126-8668. (public.dhe.ibm.com)
- In the current version of those terms (Z126-8668-07, effective 14 November 2025) the offering is section 9.3, 'Hardware Service Extension'. On-site repair is 'subject to the availability of repair parts and skilled resources'. The coverage period is set in each Transaction Document and no maximum term is stated. IBM 'may withdraw HWSE for any Machine on 30 days' written notice', with a credit for any remaining prepaid period. (ibm.com)
- Letter AD25-0134 says that after the EOSS date, 'If available, clients will continue to receive limited hardware maintenance service as described in the "Hardware Service Extension" section of your terms with IBM, without lapse in coverage'. (ibm.com)
- IBM's notice says any remaining prepaid value of a current IBM maintenance contract can be applied to the purchase of new systems once the customer has migrated. (public.dhe.ibm.com)

Related models
This generation followed POWER8 scale-out, and IBM's POWER8 lifecycle pages name the 9009-41A, 9009-22A and 9009-42A as 'Recommended replacement' for the S814, S822 and S824, so an estate that took that advice now holds machines that are themselves past End of Standard Service. The servers they succeeded have their own POWER8 scale-out end-of-life page; other platforms can be looked up in the server end-of-life checker.
Look up another model in the server & network end-of-life checker, or read what third-party maintenance covers.
Questions people ask about the IBM Power Systems POWER9 scale-out (S914 / S922 / S924)
When does IBM stop supporting the Power S922?
For the 9009-22A, IBM End of Standard Service was 31 January 2026, according to IBM's September 2024 notice and letter AD25-0134, so that date has passed. The 2020 model, the 9009-22G, has no end-of-support date on its IBM lifecycle page and is not listed in AD25-0134. The MTM on the system label tells you which one you have.
Does the January 2026 end of service cover a POWER9 9009-42G?
Not in the notice or the letter that set that date. Both list only the 9009-22A, 9009-41A, 9009-42A, 9223-22H, 9223-42H and 9008-22L, and the 9009-42G lifecycle page shows its GA and withdrawn-from-market dates (24 July 2020 and 20 October 2023) without an end-of-support date.
Can I still get firmware updates for a POWER9 server?
For the A models, IBM has not developed new machine code updates, patches or fixes, security fixes included, since End of Standard Service. Existing levels sit behind two gates: Fix Central offers Power Systems machine code for IBM machines covered by warranty or by an IBM hardware maintenance service agreement, some exceptions applying, and the server's update access key blocks any firmware whose GA date is later than the key's expiry.
What is IBM Hardware Service Extension for Power9?
It is IBM's limited maintenance for the six listed Power9 MTMs after 31 January 2026, which AD25-0134 qualifies with the words 'If available'. Under terms Z126-8668-07 it covers remote problem determination and on-site hardware repair, subject to parts and skilled resources, plus existing patches or workarounds, but not preventive service, engineering change management or new machine code. IBM can withdraw it on 30 days' written notice, so confirm price and availability with IBM.
What came after the POWER9 S924?
IBM's Power9 notice names the Power10 Power S1024 as the replacement for the S924. For the S922 it names the S1022 or S1022s, and for the S914 the S1014 or S1012.
