Where the HPE Nimble Storage HF-Series (HF20 / HF20H / HF20C / HF40 / HF40C / HF60 / HF60C) stands today
HPE's end-of-life announcement for the Adaptive Flash arrays came on 30 January 2023, followed by discontinuance on 30 June 2023 and obsolescence, the last day to buy a base array, on 31 July 2023. The notice covers these SKUs: Q8H72A (HF20), Q8H71A (HF20H), Q8H70A (HF20C), Q8H39A (HF40), R1Q54A (HF40 for SAP HANA), R0P42A (HF40C), Q8H40A (HF60) and R0P43A (HF60C), plus the dHCI arrays R4S80A to R4S86A. Controllers, shelves and other hardware upgrades could be bought until 31 July 2026, a date now past, and HPE noted that specific components might be withdrawn earlier because of supply-chain constraints.
Support now runs to a single model-wide date. End of Engineering Support, which HPE frames as the last date of engineering support availability for 'components and associated versions of Nimble OS', and End of Service/Support Life both fall on 31 July 2028; until then HPE Storage Support covers Nimble hardware and software. The 25 August 2026 revision, version 2, added the Alletra 5000 upgrade SKUs and gave them the same deadline. The one variable between arrays is the HPE contract end date, which comes from your own support agreement rather than the notice.
HPE publishes these dates model-wide in notice nmsceol-0007 (EOSL 31 Jul 2028 for every HF20/HF20H/HF20C/HF40/HF40C/HF60/HF60C and its dHCI equivalent): https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/api/document/nmsceol-0007en_us. Your contract end date is separate and is set by your HPE support agreement.
What still works after HPE support ends
An HPE support contract is what delivers NimbleOS updates to an HF array between now and July 2028. HPE's Adaptive Flash QuickSpecs say support is required for all Nimble arrays and includes InfoSight access and software updates; the base warranty by itself is one year of parts-only hardware cover plus 90 days of software updates for defects. Engineering support for the associated NimbleOS versions is due to stop on 31 July 2028, the same date as the hardware.
HPE's other offer is the upgrade route itself. Field-upgrade SKUs R6H95B (Alletra 5030) and R6H96B (Alletra 5050), each described as a 'Dual Ctrl Fld Upgr from Gen5', are offered for the HF20, HF20C, HF40, HF40C, HF60 and HF60C until 31 July 2028; the notice gives only these SKU names and does not say what existing hardware is kept. For the years beyond 2028, the previous generation, which included the CS1000H to CS7000 hybrids, gives the clearest precedent found: at its 31 October 2024 end of support, HPE said there would be no further software and no replacement parts, that InfoSight and case automation would stop working, and that groups holding any EOS product could not update. No equivalent announcement for Gen5 HF arrays turned up in a non-exhaustive search of HPE's public Nimble notices, so this is precedent to watch, not HPE's stated plan.
- HPE ties NimbleOS support to End of Engineering Support. 31 Jul 2028 is the last date of engineering support for 'components and associated versions of Nimble OS'. (support.hpe.com)
- Software updates come with the support contract. The base warranty is 1 year parts-only for hardware plus 90 days of software updates for defects. HPE says support is required for all Nimble arrays and includes HPE InfoSight access and software updates. (support.hpe.com)
- Precedent from the previous generation (including the CS1000H-CS7000 hybrids, EOS 31 Oct 2024). At EOS, HPE said it would release no further software, InfoSight and case automation would stop working, no replacement parts would be supplied, and 'Groups with any EOS products will not be able to update'. No equivalent EOS announcement for the Gen5 HF-Series was found in this pass; the check of HPE's public Nimble announcements was not exhaustive. (support.hpe.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- HPE Storage Support for Gen5 Nimble HF arrays (hardware and NimbleOS) until 31 Jul 2028 — The EOL notice says support will be offered until the end of engineering support (31 Jul 2028). (support.hpe.com)
- Cross-family field upgrade to HPE Alletra 5000: R6H95B (AL 5030) / R6H96B (AL 5050) — Offered until 31 Jul 2028 for the HF20, HF20C, HF40, HF40C, HF60 and HF60C. (support.hpe.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the HPE Nimble Storage HF-Series (HF20 / HF20H / HF20C / HF40 / HF40C / HF60 / HF60C)
An HF array is a 4U hybrid head holding up to 21 LFF hard drives plus three Dual Flash Carriers with up to six SSDs; the HF20H differs, taking up to 22 HDDs and two carriers. The schedule should list HDDs and flash carriers separately, plus two controllers with their fans and NVDIMM and two power supplies. Each HF20, HF20H or HF20C controller has 32 GB of RAM, each HF40 or HF40C controller 64 GB, and each HF60 or HF60C controller 160 GB. Connectivity starts from two onboard 10GBASE-T ports per controller and extends through optional cards from 1GBASE-T to 32Gb (16Gb) FC; since HPE counts the standby controller's ports in its figures, only half of those listed are active.
Each array takes up to six ES3 adaptive expansion shelves, 4U and 21-210 TB raw apiece, and raw capacity reaches 1,470 TB on the HF40C and HF60C. Record the model suffix exactly, since the capacity-optimised 'C' models do not support deduplication while the HF20H, HF20, HF40 and HF60 do. On power, the QuickSpecs list the HF20, HF20C, HF20H, HF40 and HF40C as shipping only with the 1200 W supply, with 3000 W AC and 3000 W DC options also in the range. Put the model, shelf count, drive mix and PSU type into the maintenance coverage builder when asking for a price.

| Raw capacity and data reduction | HF20 21-210 TB, HF20H 11-211 TB, HF20C 21-1,050 TB, HF40 21-504 TB, HF40C 21-1,470 TB, HF60 21-1,260 TB, HF60C 21-1,470 TB. Deduplication is supported on the HF20H, HF20, HF40 and HF60. The capacity-optimised 'C' models do not support dedupe. RAID: Triple+ Parity. | support.hpe.com |
| Expansion and scale | Up to six ES3 adaptive expansion shelves per array (4U, 21-210 TB raw each). Scale-out is up to 4x HF60. The HF20/HF20C and HF40/HF40C can scale up to any HF model; the HF20H scales up to the HF40. | support.hpe.com |
| Power | Power supply options: 1200 W AC (C14) or 3000 W AC (C20), both 80 PLUS Platinum, or a 3000 W DC option (-48/-72 VDC). The HF20/20C/20H/40/40C currently ship only with the 1200 W PSU. Max draw: 750 W (HF20/HF20C), 650 W (HF20H), 850 W (HF40/HF40C), 900 W (HF60/HF60C). An ES3 shelf is listed at 350 W in the power table and 500 W in the shelf summary table. | support.hpe.com |
Extend or refresh the HPE Nimble Storage HF-Series (HF20 / HF20H / HF20C / HF40 / HF40C / HF60 / HF60C)?
Six of the seven models have an HPE field upgrade to Alletra 5000 open until 31 July 2028, the same day HPE support is due to end, so price that upgrade against third-party maintenance on the existing array first. Extending is reasonable where the array stands alone or in a group of supported arrays, its NimbleOS release suits the workload, and the installed shelves meet capacity needs, since HPE stopped selling upgrade controllers and shelves on 31 July 2026. HPE third-party maintenance outlines the independent option.
Two situations argue for moving sooner. An HF array sharing a NimbleOS group with a CS1000H, CS1000, CS3000, CS5000 or CS7000, all past end of support since 31 October 2024, cannot take NimbleOS updates while that older array remains in the group. An HF20H, meanwhile, is not eligible for the Alletra 5030 or 5050 field upgrade, so its owner cannot use the route HPE offers the other six models. HPE names the Alletra 5000 and Alletra 6000 families as replacements, and it has retired the Adaptive Flash QuickSpecs (a00008274enw, last version 32, 13 November 2023).
- Neither HPE's EOL notice nor the HF QuickSpecs model table lists an 'HF80'. The models are HF20, HF20H, HF20C, HF40, HF40C, HF60 and HF60C. The only '80' is in a QuickSpecs dimensions header ('HF20/20H/20C/40/60/80'), so a quoted 'HF80' should be treated as an error rather than a model with its own dates. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE says it will continue to offer cross-family field upgrades to the Alletra 5030 (R6H95B) or 5050 (R6H96B) for the HF20, HF20C, HF40, HF40C, HF60 and HF60C until 31 Jul 2028. This OEM refresh path is worth pricing against third-party maintenance. The HF20H is not eligible. (support.hpe.com)
- Older CS1000H-CS7000 arrays reached EOS on 31 Oct 2024, and HPE states that 'Groups with any EOS products will not be able to update'. If an HF array shares a NimbleOS group with one of them, it cannot take NimbleOS updates while the EOS array remains in the group. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's last day to sell hardware upgrades (controllers, shelves, etc.) for these arrays was 31 Jul 2026. (support.hpe.com)
- The HF40C and HF60C were added to HPE's QuickSpecs on 3 Dec 2018 (Version 12), after the May 2018 launch of the rest of the line. HPE has retired the Adaptive Flash QuickSpecs (a00008274enw, last version 32, 13 Nov 2023). (support.hpe.com)

Related models
The HF-Series is the Adaptive Flash half of HPE's Gen5 Nimble generation and sits on the same end-of-life notice, nmsceol-0007, as the All Flash AF arrays. Its hybrid predecessors were the CS1000H, CS1000, CS3000, CS5000 and CS7000, and HPE's 4 September 2018 end-of-life update named the HF20, HF20C, HF20H, HF40 and HF60, launched in May 2018, among their replacements; the HPE Nimble Storage CS-Series (hybrid) end of life page covers those older arrays. The HF40C and HF60C arrived later, added to HPE's QuickSpecs on 3 December 2018. Anyone buying a second-user HF array should confirm its exact model suffix first; see refurbished HPE Nimble arrays.

Questions people ask about the HPE Nimble Storage HF-Series (HF20 / HF20H / HF20C / HF40 / HF40C / HF60 / HF60C)
Is the Nimble HF40 end of life?
Yes: the HF-Series end-of-life announcement is dated 30 January 2023, and the HF40 (Q8H39A) and HF40C (R0P42A) base arrays stopped being orderable on 31 July 2023. HPE still supports them, and its End of Service/Support Life date is 31 July 2028.
When does HPE support end for the HF20 and HF60?
Both End of Engineering Support and End of Service/Support Life fall on 31 July 2028 for the HF20 and HF60, as they do for every other HF model and dHCI equivalent in notice nmsceol-0007. Your own HPE contract end date is separate and set by your support agreement.
Is there an HPE Nimble HF80?
Neither HPE's end-of-life notice nor the HF QuickSpecs model table lists an HF80. The only '80' appears in a QuickSpecs dimensions header, so an 'HF80' on a contract or asset list should be checked against the array's actual model and SKU.
Can I upgrade a Nimble HF array to Alletra?
HPE offers cross-family field upgrades to the Alletra 5030 (R6H95B) and Alletra 5050 (R6H96B) for the HF20, HF20C, HF40, HF40C, HF60 and HF60C until 31 July 2028. The HF20H is not eligible, and the notice does not say which existing hardware the upgrade retains.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a Nimble HF array?
Independent cover generally means fault diagnosis, parts and engineers on site, and it can continue past 31 July 2028. If your model is eligible for the Alletra 5000 field upgrade (every HF model except the HF20H), price the two against each other before committing, and include the model, ES3 shelf count and PSU type in the request.
