Dell PowerScale F710 All-Flash Scale-Out NAS

All-Flash Scale-Out NAS — 1.2 PB/Node, 307 PB Cluster, OneFS 9.7

The Dell PowerScale F710 is an all-flash NAS node powered by NVMe SSDs and Dell's OneFS operating system. Scaling from 3 nodes (115 TB) to 252 nodes (307 PB) in a single global namespace, it delivers high-performance unstructured data storage for media & entertainment, genomics, AI/ML training datasets, and enterprise file services.

  • 38 TB – 1.2 PB raw capacity per node (NVMe QLC/TLC SSD)
  • 3–252 nodes per cluster — 115 TB to 307 PB single namespace
  • 512 GB memory per node
  • OneFS 9.7 operating system — multi-protocol NFS, SMB, HDFS, S3
  • Up to 2 × 100GbE or 2 × 25GbE front-end networking per node
  • Linear scale — add nodes non-disruptively, performance scales with capacity
  • SmartDedupe, SmartCompression, SmartTiering — inline data efficiency
  • SyncIQ replication — synchronous and asynchronous between clusters

Key Features

Everything you need in one device

📈

Linear Scale-Out Architecture

PowerScale's shared-nothing architecture adds capacity and performance linearly. Each F710 node added to a cluster contributes proportional IOPS, bandwidth, and metadata throughput — no performance hot-spots.

🌐

OneFS Global Namespace

All nodes in a cluster present a single namespace — no LUN carving, no volume management. OneFS distributes data across all nodes with an N+2 to N+4 fault tolerance scheme protecting against simultaneous multiple node failures.

NVMe All-Flash Performance

F710 nodes use NVMe TLC and QLC SSDs throughout (10 SSDs per node, 3.2–122 TB per drive). The all-flash design delivers the high throughput required for AI/ML training data loading and media rendering pipelines.

🔗

Multi-Protocol Flexibility

Simultaneous NFS v3/4/4.1, SMB 2/3, HDFS 1.x/2.x, HTTP/S, and native S3 (via ECS co-deployment) — serving Linux, Windows, Hadoop, and cloud-native applications from a single namespace.

💡

Inline Data Efficiency

SmartDedupe and SmartCompression provide inline capacity reduction. SmartTiering transparently migrates cold files from F710 nodes to lower-cost H-series hybrid nodes or cloud within the same cluster.

🛡️

Enterprise Data Protection

SyncIQ provides policy-based synchronous and asynchronous replication between PowerScale clusters for DR. SnapshotIQ delivers efficient local snapshots with recovery time objectives measured in seconds.

About the Dell PowerScale F710

The Dell PowerScale F710 (formerly Dell EMC Isilon F810 generation) is the all-flash member of the PowerScale portfolio, targeting workloads that need both scale-out NAS capacity and flash performance — primarily AI/ML training datasets, media & entertainment production, genomics, EDA (electronic design automation), and high-performance file services.

The fundamental advantage of PowerScale over traditional NAS is architectural: OneFS's single global namespace eliminates the management complexity of managing hundreds of individual volumes or file systems. The entire cluster appears as a single directory tree; administrators set policies on directories rather than allocating space per volume. This makes PowerScale dramatically simpler to manage at petabyte scale.

The F710 runs OneFS 9.7, which introduced improved S3 API support (enabling use as an on-premises S3 endpoint for cloud-native applications), enhanced SmartDedupe efficiency, and security improvements including FIPS 140-2 compliance for data-at-rest encryption. OneFS includes a built-in firewall, audit logging, and integration with Active Directory and LDAP.

Use Cases

Ideal for a wide range of deployments

🤖

AI / ML Training Data

High-throughput sequential reads for GPU training clusters — PowerScale F710 is designed to saturate GPU interconnects during model training and inference.

🎬

Media & Entertainment

Shared production storage for video editing, VFX, and render farms — multiple artists reading and writing simultaneously from a common namespace at high bandwidth.

🧬

Genomics & Life Sciences

Petabyte-scale genomic datasets requiring high metadata performance for small-file intensive sequencing pipelines alongside large BAM/VCF file access.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What is the difference between PowerScale F710 and H7000?

F710 uses all-NVMe SSDs and targets high-performance workloads requiring flash throughput. H7000 is a hybrid node (SSD cache + high-capacity HDD) targeting high-capacity workloads where flash-level performance is not required for all data.

Q. Can F710 and H7000 nodes be mixed in the same cluster?

Yes — PowerScale supports heterogeneous clusters with mixed node types. SmartTiering automatically moves hot data to F710 all-flash nodes and cold data to H7000 hybrid nodes within the same global namespace.

Q. Does PowerScale F710 support S3 object storage?

OneFS 9.7 includes enhanced native S3 support, allowing PowerScale to serve as an on-premises S3-compatible object storage endpoint. For enterprise object storage at scale, Dell ECS is the dedicated platform.
