Common questions
ThinkPad P1 Gen 8 vs P16 — which workstation?
The P1 Gen 8 is the thin-and-light 16-inch: RTX PRO 2000-class graphics, upgradeable LPCAMM2 memory and a 1.84 kg chassis, tuned for portability plus ISV certification. The P16 is the full-size workstation with higher-wattage HX silicon, higher RTX PRO GPU tiers and larger memory ceilings. Choose the P1 when the machine has to travel; the P16 when maximum GPU and memory win over weight.
Is the memory really upgradeable?
Yes. Unlike soldered-LPDDR5x rivals, the P1 Gen 8 uses a single LPCAMM2 module (LPDDR5X-7467, dual-channel, to 64 GB) — modular and serviceable. Some distributor feeds label it 'LPDDR5x-SDRAM'; Lenovo's own PSREF confirms the LPCAMM2 architecture, which is what makes mid-life upgrades possible.
RTX PRO 2000 or RTX PRO 1000 — which stocked build?
The RTX PRO 2000 Blackwell suits heavier CAD, DCC and AI work; the RTX PRO 1000 Blackwell covers lighter viewport and AI tasks at lower cost. Both carry 8 GB GDDR7. We stock a 255H with the RTX PRO 2000, a 255H with the RTX PRO 1000, and a 285H with the RTX PRO 2000 at 64 GB / 2 TB.
Can it take two SSDs?
Yes — two M.2 2280 slots (PCIe 4.0 x4, Gen5 performance NVMe supported), up to 4 TB each for 8 TB total, with RAID 0/1 and Opal 2.0 self-encryption. The stocked builds ship a single drive; we fit the second SSD to order.
