FlashArray//XL R5 delivers 3× more IOPS per rack unit over comparably configured competitive systems (HammerDB SQL Server TPCROC-C). The XL170 R5 provides a 70% performance increase over the previous generation, and the XL190 R5 adds Purity Turbo to engage the secondary controller for read-heavy workloads at the highest possible throughput.
Proprietary DirectFlash Modules replace commodity SSDs, enabling the Purity OS to manage flash media globally — resulting in 6× greater reliability than HDDs, 3× over SSDs, and continuously improving storage density. DirectFlash Modules with distributed NVRAM (DFMD) eliminate the need for separate NVRAM modules, scaling NVRAM capacity with the number of modules installed.
DirectFlash Shelf adds raw NVMe capacity beyond the FlashArray//XL chassis, connecting via NVMe-oF with RoCE over 100Gb Ethernet. Each shelf can hold up to 1,024 TB raw (3.8 PB effective), enabling the XL190 R5 to reach 2.5 PB raw with full DirectFlash Shelf configuration.
SafeMode Snapshots are enabled by default on every FlashArray, protecting against ransomware-induced data deletion even if admin credentials are compromised. Data protection configuration is completed in minutes with no additional licenses — Pure Storage ships with security on, not as an opt-in.
Evergreen Architecture enables fully data-in-place, nondisruptive controller, DirectFlash Module, and chassis upgrades across generations — unique to Pure Storage. Three models cover a broad performance and capacity range: the XL130 R5 (up to 5.5 PB effective, up to 1.46 PB raw), XL170 R5 (up to 7.4 PB effective, up to 1.97 PB raw), and XL190 R5 (up to 9.4 PB effective, up to 2.5 PB raw). The XL190 R5 additionally features Purity Turbo, which actively employs the secondary controller to serve read I/O — maximising throughput for read-intensive workloads without complexity.
DirectFlash Shelf expansion units add NVMe capacity via 100Gb RoCE, each shelf supporting up to 1,024 TB raw (3.8 PB effective). The FlashArray//XL supports 32 host I/O ports per controller — doubling FlashArray//X — with 200GbE RoCE inter-controller links for enhanced cross-controller high availability. The DirectCompress Accelerator v2 card offloads inline compression to dedicated PCIe hardware, maintaining maximum compression ratios under heavy load.
Built on Pure Storage's Evergreen Architecture, the FlashArray//XL supports fully nondisruptive, data-in-place generational upgrades — eliminating the planned downtime and data migrations that accompany legacy storage refreshes. SafeMode Snapshots are enabled by default, and the full data protection suite (instant snapshots, replication, ransomware remediation) is included without separate licensing.
