The Vertiv Avocent ACS8000 is the current generation of Vertiv's advanced serial console server platform, providing out-of-band serial console management for 8 to 48 serial devices. Serial console access is the foundational layer of data centre out-of-band management — providing access to servers, network switches, routers, firewalls, and power equipment through their dedicated management ports rather than through the production network, ensuring management access survives network failures.
The most operationally significant feature of the ACS8000 is its integrated 4G LTE cellular out-of-band path. When a network failure occurs — which is precisely the scenario when out-of-band access is needed — the ACS8000 automatically routes management traffic over cellular, maintaining console access to all connected devices through the failure. This makes the ACS8000 a genuine out-of-band solution, unlike console servers that rely on a secondary Ethernet interface that may traverse the same failed network.
FIPS 140-2 cryptographic module validation is embedded as standard, positioning the ACS8000 for deployment in government, defence, financial services, and healthcare environments where FIPS-validated cryptography is a procurement requirement. TLS 1.3 and IPsec VPN provide defence-in-depth encryption for management traffic at both the session and network layers.
Zero Touch Provisioning dramatically reduces the operational cost of deploying ACS8000 units at distributed sites. Remote offices and branch locations can receive preconfigured ACS8000 units that self-configure from a central provisioning server on first power-up — eliminating the need for an IT engineer to physically attend each site for initial setup. Combined with 4G LTE cellular, this creates a complete out-of-band management solution for distributed organisations with minimal on-site IT presence.
