From IQ Module to DSView Dashboard
How Vertiv Avocent KVM and console servers connect your team to every device — with 4G cellular backup when the network fails.
Connect Servers via IQ Modules
Avocent IQ (Interface Module) adapters plug into server USB + video ports (USB+HDMI, USB+DVI, USB+VGA), then connect to the MPU KVM switch via standard Cat5/6 cabling. For serial console access, connect the ACS8000 to network device serial ports.
IQ modules are hot-swappable and draw power from the server USB port. Modules retain server identity in non-volatile memory — no re-configuration required if the MPU switch is replaced or upgraded.
Access via DSView or Browser
Administrators access servers through the Avocent DSView management platform — a centralised web application providing single-sign-on, unified access to all MPU KVM switches and ACS8000 console servers across the entire estate.
DSView provides a hub-and-spoke architecture: one DSView server manages hundreds of Avocent devices. Administrators log in once and see every server and serial device they have permission to access across all sites.
Authenticate with LDAP or AD
Users authenticate via Active Directory, LDAP, or RADIUS through DSView — no separate user accounts per device. Role-based access control defines which users can access which servers with which permissions.
The ACS8000 uses FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography for all sessions. TLS 1.3 encrypts web access and SSH sessions. IPsec VPN tunnels provide network-layer encryption for remote sites.
Out-of-Band via 4G LTE (ACS8000)
When the production network fails, the ACS8000 automatically routes management traffic over its integrated 4G LTE cellular modem — maintaining serial console access to all connected devices through the outage.
This cellular path is completely independent of the Ethernet infrastructure being managed. Misconfigured firewalls, failed core switches, or fibre cuts that take the production network offline do not affect the 4G out-of-band management path.
Full 4K Access — HMX 8000
For workstation-class 4K video requirements, HMX 8000 transmitters attach to server rear panels (zero rack space) and stream full 4K over 10Gbps fiber to HMX receiver workstations with pixel-perfect, lossless quality.
Multicast support allows a single server display to be simultaneously viewed by multiple receiver workstations — for control rooms and trading floor environments where multiple operators monitor the same system.
Centralise All Access in DSView
DSView unifies KVM access (MPU switches), serial console access (ACS8000), and HMX KVM into a single management platform. Audit logs, session recordings, access policy, and user management are all centralised.
DSView's API enables integration with ITSM platforms, CMDB systems, and security monitoring tools. Alert and notification rules can trigger on any session event — enabling real-time security monitoring of all privileged access activity.
ACS8000 — FIPS Serial Console with 4G Out-of-Band
The Avocent ACS8000 is the out-of-band management foundation for data centres and remote sites. When the production network fails — a mis-configured firewall, a fibre cut, a switch loop — the ACS8000's 4G LTE cellular path maintains console access to every connected device through the outage.
FIPS 140-2 validated cryptography is embedded as standard — no upgrade required. Zero Touch Provisioning deploys units at remote sites without on-site configuration.
