Why refurbished tape is the smartest cold tier
Disk and cloud are where backups land for fast restore, but they are online — and anything online can be reached, encrypted or billed for. A tape cartridge ejected from the library is physically air-gapped: it cannot be altered or deleted remotely, which is exactly why tape is central to the 3-2-1-1-0 strategy and to ransomware-resilient retention. LTO media is also rated for decades of archival life, and tape’s cost per terabyte for cold data is unmatched.
Refurbished tape pushes the economics further. Libraries like the MSL3040 are current, actively-developed LTO-9 platforms, so a re-certified unit is a long-term investment, not legacy kit — and refurbished LTO drives, the priciest part of any tape estate, commonly sell at up to around 80% below new. Servnet supplies the libraries, the drives and the cartridges, tested and warrantied, ready to write from Veeam, Commvault or your existing backup software.
LTO generations & where refurbished makes sense
Unlike disk arrays, tape has no near-term end of support — LTO is a living roadmap. The refurbished sweet spot is the current and prior generations, where supply is deep and read/write compatibility is intact.
LTO-9 drives read and write LTO-9 and read/write LTO-8; the MSL3040 is the actively-developed LTO-9 platform. Refurbished LTO-7/8 libraries and drives are abundant and inexpensive; pair them with the right generation of media for your retention needs.

The single biggest saving in tape — refurbished LTO drives at a fraction of new.
Up to ~80% below newWhat you gain buying tape refurbished from Servnet
Beyond the headline saving, the practical advantages that matter for backup and archive.
Reseller-reported savings: refurbished LTO drives commonly run up to ~80% below new, libraries less; figures are directional, not an independent benchmark. Confirm against a live Servnet quote.
The biggest saving is on drives
LTO drives are the costliest part of any tape estate, and they are exactly where refurbished delivers most — commonly up to around 80% below new for the same generation.
An air-gap ransomware can’t cross
An ejected cartridge is offline by physics, not policy — the immutable, off-site copy at the heart of a 3-2-1-1-0 strategy and the last line against encryption attacks.
A platform with a future
The MSL3040 is a current LTO-9 library on a living roadmap — a refurbished unit is a multi-year archive investment, not end-of-life hardware.
Tested with your backup software
We exercise the robotics and drives, baseline firmware, and supply libraries that present cleanly to Veeam, Commvault and other backup platforms.
How we re-certify every tape library & drive
Each library is sourced from decommissioned estates, then the robotics are exercised through full pick-and-place cycles, the barcode reader and mail slot are checked, and every drive is tested for read/write at rated speed against known-good media. PSUs, fans and host interfaces (SAS or FC) are verified, and firmware is brought to a supported baseline.
Any residual data on returned media is handled to the NIST 800-88 standard, drives are cleaned and re-certified against the ordered specification, then the unit is sealed and shipped under a Servnet hardware warranty — ready to be zoned and presented to your backup application.
Warranty, support and media
Every refurbished library and drive ships with a Servnet-backed hardware warranty as standard, with extension options, and we can supply LTO-8 and LTO-9 cartridges (including WORM media for compliance retention) and cleaning cartridges alongside the hardware.
As a 24-year HPE partner, Servnet can pair refurbished StoreEver tape with the disk-to-disk-to-tape design that fits your recovery objectives — for example a StoreOnce or array tier for fast restores, tiering to air-gapped tape for long-term, ransomware-resilient retention.

HPE StoreEver Tape refurbished — common questions
Is refurbished tape reliable for backup and archive?
Yes. Tape libraries and drives are mechanically robust and built for long service. We exercise the robotics through full motion cycles, test every drive for read/write at rated speed against known-good media, verify host interfaces and baseline firmware before the unit ships under warranty. For archive specifically, LTO media itself is rated for decades of storage life.
How much cheaper are refurbished LTO drives?
LTO drives are the most expensive component of a tape estate and the area where refurbished saves most — reseller-reported figures commonly reach up to around 80% below new for the same LTO generation. Libraries save less. These are directional market figures; we will quote an exact saving against current stock.
Why is tape worth buying at all in the cloud era?
Because an ejected cartridge is physically air-gapped — offline and immutable in a way no online disk or cloud bucket can match. That makes tape the copy ransomware cannot encrypt and the cheapest possible cold tier for data you must keep but rarely read. It complements, rather than replaces, disk and cloud in a 3-2-1-1-0 backup strategy.
Which LTO generation should I buy refurbished?
LTO-9 (18 TB native / 45 TB compressed) is current and best for new long-term retention; LTO-8 (12/30 TB) is abundant and cheaper refurbished. LTO-9 drives read and write LTO-8, so an LTO-9 library can still use an existing LTO-8 cartridge estate. We’ll match drive generation, library size and media to your retention plan.
Will a refurbished MSL library work with our backup software?
Yes — StoreEver MSL libraries present as standard SAS or Fibre Channel tape libraries and are supported by the major backup platforms including Veeam and Commvault. We test that the library and drives enumerate correctly and can advise on zoning and drive/partition layout for your software.
