Where the Cisco Catalyst 9400 stands today
The 9400 is dated module by module. Bulletin EOL15392, announced on 30 April 2024, covers the C9400-SUP-1, SUP-1XL and SUP-1XL-Y supervisors. Their sale ended on 30 April 2025, and End of Software Maintenance Releases and End of New Service Attachment followed on 30 April 2026. Existing supervisor contracts may be renewed until 29 July 2029, and End of Vulnerability/Security Support and the Last Date of Support both fall on 30 April 2030. A chassis running Supervisor 1 family modules is therefore best treated as end-of-life announced and supported until 30 April 2030, even though the chassis itself carries no notice.
The second notice, EOL15633, covers the C9400-LC-48UX, a 48-port UPOE card with 24 mGig and 24 RJ-45 ports. It reached End-of-Sale on 30 April 2026; software maintenance releases for it end on 30 April 2027 and its Last Date of Support is 30 April 2031. To date your own chassis, list the product ID of every supervisor, line card and power supply, then check each against the Table 2 lists in EOL15392 and EOL15633; a PID in neither list had no announced end of life as of 8 October 2026. Cisco's 9400 notice page also links EOL14965, but that bulletin concerns Catalyst 4500 bundles (C4500E-7R-S9E-MGIG and C4510RE-S9-UPOE), not 9400 hardware.
The 9400 has no single model-wide date. Check each module's product ID (supervisor, line cards, PSUs) against the Table 2 lists in EOL15392 (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-9400-series-switches/catalyst-9400-series-supervisor-module-eol.html) and EOL15633 (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/switches/catalyst-9400-series-switches/catalyst-9400-48port-upoe-mgig-24p-eol.html). A PID in neither list had no announced EoL as of 2026-10-08.
What still works after Cisco support ends
Cisco's software statement for the Supervisor 1 family is specific: the last supported IOS XE release is 17.18 Extended Maintenance, its last Software Maintenance release is 17.18.1, and later rebuilds of that release receive Vulnerability and Security (PSIRT) support only. For SNTC contracts created before Cisco renamed the service Cisco Support on 15 June 2025, software updates are an entitlement under section 2.3 of the SNTC service description, headed 'Software Download'. Since 30 April 2026 an uncovered Sup-1, 1XL or 1XL-Y cannot be put on a Cisco contract, although contracts already in place can be renewed until 29 July 2029.
Outside a contract, a free update can be requested from Cisco TAC as an exception by quoting the advisory URL. Cisco weighs each request 'on a case-by-case basis', and such updates are 'typically limited to Critical- and High-severity vulnerabilities'. Past a component's Last Date of Support (30 April 2030 for the Supervisor 1 family, 30 April 2031 for the C9400-LC-48UX), reports to Cisco PSIRT are still accepted, yet Cisco will neither analyse, fix nor disclose them and issues no CVEs.
- Supervisor 1 / 1XL / 1XL-Y: Cisco says the last supported IOS XE release is the 17.18 Extended Maintenance Release. The last Software Maintenance release is 17.18.1; later rebuilds of that release get Vulnerability and Security (PSIRT) support only. (cisco.com)
- Software updates are a contract entitlement. Section 2.3 'Software Download' of Cisco's Smart Net Total Care service description covers 'Operating system updates, work-around solutions, or patches to reported Software problems'. That description applies to SNTC contracts created before 15 Jun 2025, when Cisco rebranded SNTC as 'Cisco Support'. (cisco.com)
- Without a contract: customers ask Cisco TAC for a free update on an exception basis, citing the advisory URL. Cisco decides 'on a case-by-case basis', and free updates are 'typically limited to Critical- and High-severity vulnerabilities'. (sec.cloudapps.cisco.com)
- After a component's Last Date of Support (Sup-1 family 2030-04-30; C9400-LC-48UX 2031-04-30), Cisco PSIRT accepts vulnerability reports but will not analyse, fix or disclose them, and issues no CVEs. (sec.cloudapps.cisco.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- Cisco Support (rebrand of Smart Net Total Care, effective 15 June 2025) — Cisco's service-and-support contract. Limits for Supervisor 1 units are in the next entry. (cisco.com)
- Contract renewal only - Supervisor 1 family (until 2029-07-29) — New service attachment closed 2026-04-30. (cisco.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the Cisco Catalyst 9400
Scope a 9400 contract by chassis first. The C9404R has four slots, two of them for line cards, in 6 RU with four power supply bays. The C9407R has seven slots (five for line cards) in 10 RU with eight PSU bays, and the C9410R has ten slots (eight for line cards) in 13 RU, also with eight PSU bays. Each has two dedicated supervisor slots, so record whether one or two supervisors are fitted, and which. Power supplies come as 3200W AC, 2100W AC or 3200W DC units running in N+1, N+N or combined mode, and PoE line cards deliver Cisco UPOE+ (90W), UPOE (60W) or PoE+ (30W), up to 4320W per slot with the current shipping cards.
Supervisor uplinks belong in the parts list as well: the Sup-1, 1XL and 1XL-Y provide up to two 40G QSFP and up to eight 10G SFP+ ports, and the 1XL-Y adds up to two 25G. Where two chassis run as a StackWise Virtual pair, one logical switch spread across two frames, both belong on the same contract. Cisco third-party maintenance generally provides diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, including after a component's vendor end of support; a hardware break-fix support quote can be requested per chassis with every module listed.

Extend or refresh the Cisco Catalyst 9400?
With no notice on the chassis, the 9400 decision comes down to the supervisor rather than the frame. A Sup-1 delivers 80 Gbps per slot in every chassis, and a Sup-1XL or 1XL-Y gives 240, 120 or 80 Gbps per slot in the C9404R, C9407R and C9410R respectively. If that bandwidth and the installed line cards meet demand, keeping Supervisor 1 hardware in service under maintenance is reasonable while Cisco's security support lasts, bearing in mind that Cisco's End of Software Maintenance Releases milestone for it was 30 April 2026.
Two things sharpen the argument for change. The data sheet marks 25G (SFP28), 40G (QSFP+) and 100G (QSFP28) line-card ports 'Requires SUP-2/2XL', so a Sup-1 chassis cannot use them, and on 30 April 2030 the Supervisor 1 family leaves security support. EOL15392 names the C9400X-SUP-2 as the replacement for the SUP-1 and the C9400X-SUP-2XL for the SUP-1XL and SUP-1XL-Y; they offer 240 and 480 Gbps per slot respectively, and the bulletin's -B PIDs are 'BUNDLE PID ONLY - NOT AN ACTUAL HW'. For the C9400-LC-48UX, Cisco names the C9400-LC-48HN, a 48-port UPOE+ 5G RJ-45 card. Both are module-level replacements, so the chassis itself stays in place.
- The data sheet marks 25G (SFP28), 40G (QSFP+) and 100G (QSFP28) line-card ports 'Requires SUP-2/2XL', so a Sup-1-based chassis cannot use them. (cisco.com)
- An uncovered Sup-1/1XL/1XL-Y can no longer be put on a Cisco contract (End of New Service Attachment 2026-04-30). Existing contracts can be renewed until 2029-07-29. (cisco.com)
- Cisco names C9400X-SUP-2 as the replacement for C9400-SUP-1 and C9400X-SUP-2XL for C9400-SUP-1XL and SUP-1XL-Y. The -B PIDs are marked 'BUNDLE PID ONLY - NOT AN ACTUAL HW'. (cisco.com)
- Cisco names C9400-LC-48HN (48-Port UPOE+ 5G RJ-45) as the replacement for the end-of-sale C9400-LC-48UX line card. (cisco.com)

Related models
The Catalyst 9400, with a series release date of 20 June 2017, is a modular chassis line in Cisco's Catalyst 9000 family, so its lifecycle is read through supervisor and line-card bulletins rather than one model-wide notice. Other Catalyst lines are covered on their own pages, including Catalyst 9300 end of life and Catalyst 9200 end of life, and the wider range is listed under Cisco hardware.

Questions people ask about the Cisco Catalyst 9400
Is the Cisco Catalyst 9400 end of life?
No. As of 8 October 2026 Cisco has published no End-of-Sale notice for the C9404R, C9407R or C9410R chassis and lists the series as 'Available'. The Supervisor 1 family and the C9400-LC-48UX line card are end of sale, with Last Dates of Support of 30 April 2030 and 30 April 2031 respectively.
When does Cisco stop supporting the Catalyst 9400 Supervisor 1?
EOL15392 sets 30 April 2030 as both the End of Vulnerability/Security Support and the Last Date of Support for the C9400-SUP-1, SUP-1XL and SUP-1XL-Y. Existing contracts can be renewed until 29 July 2029; new contract attachment closed on 30 April 2026.
Can a Catalyst 9400 with Sup-1 use 25G, 40G or 100G line-card ports?
No. Cisco's data sheet marks 25G (SFP28), 40G (QSFP+) and 100G (QSFP28) line-card ports 'Requires SUP-2/2XL', so a chassis running a Supervisor 1 family module cannot use them.
What replaces the C9400-SUP-1?
Cisco names the C9400X-SUP-2 as the replacement for the SUP-1 and the C9400X-SUP-2XL for the SUP-1XL and SUP-1XL-Y. The change is made at supervisor level; the chassis itself has no end-of-life notice.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a Catalyst 9400?
A quote can be requested. List the chassis and every module by PID, including supervisors, line cards and power supplies, and say whether it is in a StackWise Virtual pair. Third-party maintenance generally covers fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers.
