PowerEdge R340 end of life

The Dell PowerEdge R340 has no published model-wide end-of-life date, because Dell does not issue End of Sale or End of Service Life dates for PowerEdge models and ends warranty or ProSupport cover separately for each service tag. What the R340 does have is an Urgent BIOS, 2.21.1 from 16 December 2025, which updates the certificates in its Standard Secure Boot Policy to Microsoft's 2023 CAs, and a fixed 14G date for its iDRAC9 controller, whose software maintenance stops on 1 February 2027.

Where the PowerEdge R340 stands today

The R340 is a single-socket 1U server built on an Intel Xeon E-2100 or E-2200 (up to eight cores) or a Core i3, Pentium or Celeron chip. In Dell's December 2025 Windows Server matrix its row carries the 14G marker Dell defines as 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued', with no date attached. On 2 October 2025 a Dell Enterprise Support Services reply in the Dell Community forum stated that Dell has not published PowerEdge EOL details since about the 11th or 12th generation and that dates for a particular system come from its service tag.

Enter the R340's service tag at dell.com/support/home to see the warranty or ProSupport end date for that unit, and, per a Dell moderator's June 2024 guidance, check 'Service Events' with 'Historical' ticked and the filter applied for its EOL information. Dell's KB 000178016 adds two dates that apply to the R340's iDRAC9 because Dell's generation KB lists it as 14G: new iDRAC9 feature development stopped on 30 June 2023, and iDRAC9 software maintenance ends on 1 February 2027. They describe the management controller, not the R340 as a whole.

Finding the date for your own unit

Dell sets end dates per unit, not per model. Enter the server's service tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/ to see its warranty or ProSupport coverage and end date. Dell moderator guidance (24 Jun 2024): open 'Service Events', tick 'Historical' and apply the filter to view EOL information for the unit (https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/rack-servers/eol/6679174c9135e72a52f84147). For an extension quote, use 'Renew Online with Service Tag' at https://www.dell.com/en-uk/lp/dell-warranty-extensions-upgrades.

What still works after Dell support ends

Under Dell's KB 000128194, every driver and firmware file for Dell servers is a free download from Dell Support, and the KB can be browsed by model. The R340 BIOS is a package shared with the R240, T340 and T140, and version 2.21.1 'Updated Secure Boot Certificates contained in the Standard Secure Boot Policy' to the Microsoft 2023 CAs; it is on a public driver page with the service tag optional. iDRAC9, by contrast, is down to discretionary Sev1 security fixes until 1 February 2027, and Dell has no obligation to repair its firmware afterwards.

For hardware, Dell offers ProSupport or ProSupport Plus extensions and renewals per service tag through 'Renew Online with Service Tag'. Dell decides eligibility unit by unit and has published no 14G cap. Dell staff have described up to 5 years from ship date as 'pretty standard' (forum reply, October 2025), saying cover beyond that turns on part availability.

  • Dell: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website'. The KB lets you browse by model instead of entering a service tag. (dell.com)
  • The R340 shares a BIOS package with the R240, T340 and T140. Version 2.21.1 (16 Dec 2025, Urgent) 'Updated Secure Boot Certificates contained in the Standard Secure Boot Policy' to the Microsoft 2023 CAs. It is on a public Dell driver page, and entering a service tag is optional. (dell.com)
  • iDRAC9 for 14G gets discretionary Sev1 security fixes only, until 2027-02-01. After that, Dell has no obligation to fix. (dell.com)

Vendor support you can still buy

  • Dell ProSupport / ProSupport Plus extension or renewal (per service tag) — Offered through Dell's 'Renew Online with Service Tag'. Eligibility is decided per unit. Dell staff (Oct 2025) say up to 5 years from ship date is 'pretty standard' and that longer cover depends on part availability. Dell publishes no 14G cap. (dell.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R340

Storage on the R340 is either 4 x 3.5in or 8 x 2.5in hot-swappable SAS/SATA/SSD drives, with 2.5in drives also usable in 3.5in adapters, behind an internal PERC H730P, PERC H330, HBA330 or S140 software RAID; external 12Gb SAS HBA or HBA355e cards may connect further storage. Power is a single or dual redundant hot-plug 350 W or 550 W Platinum supply, so note which units have only one.

Cooling deserves its own line: Dell's Technical Guide describes three or four fans that are non-redundant and not hot-swappable, so fan replacement should be listed explicitly. Memory is four DDR4 ECC UDIMM slots up to 64 GB, and the BMC is iDRAC9 (IPMI 2.0-compliant), with iDRAC9 Express or Enterprise as options. Dell third-party maintenance generally provides fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, including past the end of Dell's cover, and the maintenance coverage builder can take your unit list for a quote.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R340?

For an R340 in a stable role, maintenance is a defensible way to extend its life, provided the BIOS is at 2.21.0 or later, Dell's minimum for the Microsoft 2023 Secure Boot certificates on the R340, T340, R240 and T140. The Microsoft Secure Boot certificate expiration, which Dell dates to June 2026, is now in the past. An installed OS is not stopped from booting by the expired certificates, Dell says; what it flags as possible is boot failure after a BIOS defaults reset or with Secure Boot disabled, plus no further Secure Boot-related updates. Dell's R340 supported-OS list reaches VMware ESXi 8.0 and Windows Server 2022 LTSC, and Dell's December 2025 matrix qualifies Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016 in Essentials and Standard editions.

The processors give the R340 a refresh argument of its own. Intel lists End of Servicing Updates for two CPUs from Dell's R340 Technical Guide, the Xeon E-2134 from the E-2100 series and the E-2224 from the E-2200 series, as 30 June 2025, so Intel's servicing date for those SKUs has passed. Add Windows Server 2025 (not on the R340 list, and no 14G column in the matrix), OMSA's final release on 30 September 2024 with sustenance until 30 September 2027 and no Windows Server 2025 support, and Dell's statement that from ESXi 8.0 SD/USB boot devices are not recommended, which affects hosts on the optional IDSDM. Where those weigh heavily, plan the move before iDRAC9 software maintenance ends on 1 February 2027; the next model in the same line is the PowerEdge R350.

  • Dell's 'Servers by generation' KB classifies the R340 as 14th generation, so Dell's 14G-wide lifecycle statements (iDRAC9 maintenance end, Secure Boot BIOS, OS matrix) apply to it. (dell.com)
  • Dell's R340 Technical Guide lists Xeon E-2100 SKUs (e.g. E-2134) and E-2200 SKUs (e.g. E-2224). (i.dell.com)
  • Intel lists End of Servicing Updates for the Xeon E-2134 (E-2100, Coffee Lake) as 2025-06-30. (intel.com)
  • Intel lists End of Servicing Updates for the Xeon E-2224 (E-2200, Coffee Lake) as 2025-06-30. (intel.com)
  • Dell's Windows Server matrix (Dec 2025) qualifies the R340 against Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016 (Essentials and Standard). There is no Windows Server 2025 column for 14G. (dl.dell.com)
  • Dell's R340 supported-OS list goes up to VMware ESXi 8.0 and Windows Server 2022 LTSC. Windows Server 2025 is not listed. (dell.com)
  • Dell dates the Microsoft Secure Boot certificate expiration to June 2026. Dell's minimum BIOS with the 2023 certificates for the R340/T340/R240/T140 is 2.21.0. (dell.com)
  • Dell: expired certificates do not stop an installed OS booting. Dell lists two possible effects: boot failure if BIOS defaults are reset or Secure Boot is disabled, and no further Secure Boot-related updates. (dell.com)
  • Dell's vSphere 8.0 KB lists the R340 among affected products and states 'Starting ESXi 8.0, SD/USB based boot devices are not recommended'. The R340 offers an optional IDSDM. (dell.com)
  • OMSA had its final release on 30 Sep 2024 and is in sustenance until 30 Sep 2027. It does not support Windows Server 2025. (dell.com)

Impress Cloud Watch reported that Dell / EMC Japan began selling the R340 on 5 December 2018 in a batch with the T340, R240, T140 and R740xd2. Its BIOS package also serves the R240, T340 and T140, so the 2.21.1 Secure Boot update and the 2.21.0 minimum carry across all four. Its predecessor was the R330, a Xeon E3-1200 v6 server with iDRAC8 that Dell's R340 Technical Guide uses for comparison. Dell's 14G-wide iDRAC9 timetable is set out further in PowerEdge 14G end of life in depth.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R340

Is the Dell PowerEdge R340 end of life?

Dell has not dated it. The R340 row of Dell's December 2025 Windows Server matrix carries the 14G note 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued', yet Dell publishes no model-wide End of Sale or End of Service Life date for PowerEdge, so the R340's dates are set per service tag through warranty and ProSupport.

Has Dell updated the R340 BIOS for the 2023 Secure Boot certificates?

Yes. Dell released BIOS 2.21.1 for the R340 on 16 December 2025, rated Urgent, which updated the certificates in the Standard Secure Boot Policy to Microsoft's 2023 CAs, and Dell names 2.21.0 as the minimum R340 BIOS carrying them. The package is shared with the R240, T340 and T140 and downloads free, with the service tag optional.

What does Intel say about the R340's Xeon E-2134 and E-2224?

Intel lists End of Servicing Updates for the Xeon E-2134 and E-2224, two processors in Dell's R340 Technical Guide, as 30 June 2025, a date that has now passed. Check the SKU fitted to your own unit on Intel's product page.

What came after the PowerEdge R340?

Next in the same line is the PowerEdge R350. On the earlier side, Dell's R340 Technical Guide measures the R340 against the R330.

Can an R340 go on third-party maintenance?

You can request a quote. What third-party maintenance generally provides is diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, with cover that can outlast a unit's Dell warranty or ProSupport; the server end-of-life checker helps map the rest of your estate first.
