PowerEdge T640 end of life

There is no model-wide end-of-life date for the Dell PowerEdge T640: Dell does not publish model-level End of Sale or End of Service Life dates for PowerEdge, and each unit's warranty or ProSupport end date is tied to its service tag. The T640, a two-socket tower that takes up to 32 x 2.5in drives and 3 TB of memory, still gets BIOS releases (2.27.0 on 27 April 2026), while iDRAC9 software maintenance for 14G stops on 1 February 2027.

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the PowerEdge T640 stands today

The T640 was built in many shapes, from an eight-drive tower to a 5U rack system with GPUs, and Dell's dates follow the individual unit rather than the model. A Dell support reply (2 October 2025) says PowerEdge EOL details stopped being published around the 11th or 12th generation. In Dell's Windows Server matrix (December 2025), the T640 row carries the marker that the matrix's 14G page explains as 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued'; no date accompanies it.

Your T640's date comes from its service tag: enter it at dell.com/support/home for the warranty or ProSupport end date, then, following Dell moderator advice from June 2024, use the 'Service Events' tab with 'Historical' ticked and the filter applied to view EOL information. The 14G lifecycle dates in Dell's iDRAC9 guide concern the controller alone. Feature development stopped on 30 June 2023, and the End of Software Maintenance date is 1 February 2027. These apply to the management controller firmware, not to T640 hardware cover.

Finding the date for your own unit

Dell sets end dates per unit, not per model. Enter the server's service tag at https://www.dell.com/support/home/ to see its warranty or ProSupport coverage and end date. Dell moderator guidance (24 Jun 2024): open 'Service Events', tick 'Historical' and apply the filter to view EOL information for the unit (https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/rack-servers/eol/6679174c9135e72a52f84147). For an extension quote, use 'Renew Online with Service Tag' at https://www.dell.com/en-uk/lp/dell-warranty-extensions-upgrades.

What still works after Dell support ends

T640 firmware remains openly available. Dell's downloads KB is explicit that 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website', and it lets you browse by model rather than by tag. Dell's T640 BIOS page, which applies to the PowerEdge T640 and the OEMR T640, offers version 2.27.0 (27 April 2026, Recommended) without needing a service tag. iDRAC9 has a published end: discretionary Sev1 security fixes only, until 1 February 2027, after which Dell has no obligation to fix it.

Dell extends or renews T640 hardware cover as ProSupport or ProSupport Plus through 'Renew Online with Service Tag', judging eligibility per unit with no published 14G cap. For term, Dell staff writing on the forum in October 2025 put 'pretty standard' cover at up to 5 years from ship date, with part availability deciding anything longer. Because that reply ties longer cover to part availability, mention any GPU, NVDIMM or DC power options when you ask.

  • Dell: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website'. The KB lets you browse by model instead of entering a service tag. (dell.com)
  • The T640 BIOS v2.27.0 (27 Apr 2026, Recommended; applies to PowerEdge T640 and OEMR T640) is on a public Dell driver page. Entering a service tag is optional. (dell.com)
  • iDRAC9 for 14G gets discretionary Sev1 security fixes only, until 2027-02-01. After that, Dell has no obligation to fix. (dell.com)

Vendor support you can still buy

  • Dell ProSupport / ProSupport Plus extension or renewal (per service tag) — Offered through Dell's 'Renew Online with Service Tag'. Eligibility is decided per unit. Dell staff (Oct 2025) say up to 5 years from ship date is 'pretty standard' and that longer cover depends on part availability. Dell publishes no 14G cap. (dell.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge T640

Scoping a T640 contract starts with an audit of each unit. Storage may be 8 or 18 x 3.5in SAS/SATA, 16 or 32 x 2.5in SAS/SATA, or 16 x 2.5in with up to eight NVMe drives. Memory can reach 3 TB across 24 DDR4 slots at up to 2933 MT/s, with up to 12 NVDIMMs (192 GB maximum). A unit takes up to two redundant AC or DC power supplies from a long list (495 W, 750 W Platinum or Titanium, 1100 W AC, 1100 W -48 V DC, 1600 W, 2000 W and 2400 W), so each unit's exact PSU part matters.

Only the rack form factor can carry GPUs (four double-width or eight single-width), and Dell's spec sheet says those must be ordered at initial purchase, so the cards already fitted are the ones a contract needs to name. Add the up to eight PCIe Gen3 slots, the 2 x 10GbE LOM (1GbE/10GbE) and iDRAC9 with Quick Sync 2. Third-party maintenance for such a unit generally spans diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer time, and need not stop when Dell's cover on the tag does; the maintenance coverage builder takes these details for a quote.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge T640?

Where a T640 already has the drives and memory its job needs and runs an OS Dell lists, extending it on maintenance is reasonable. VMware ESXi 8.0 and Windows Server 2022 LTSC top its supported-OS list, and the Windows Server matrix qualifies it for 2022, 2019, 2016 and 2012 R2. Dell's minimum T640 BIOS with the Microsoft 2023 Secure Boot certificates is 2.25.0, and Dell dates the certificate expiry to June 2026, now past. In Dell's view, the expiry does not stop an installed OS from booting; it names two possible effects, boot failure once BIOS defaults are reset or Secure Boot is turned off, and no further Secure Boot-related updates.

The refresh argument rests on software and silicon rather than capacity. Windows Server 2025 appears neither on the T640's OS list nor in a 14G column of Dell's matrix; Windows Server 2016 has had no new Dell drivers since February 2022; and OMSA, in sustenance until 30 September 2027, does not support Windows Server 2025. Intel lists End of Servicing Updates as 31 December 2023 for the 1st Gen Xeon Silver 4110, one of the processors in Dell's T640 Technical Guide, and as 30 June 2025 for the 2nd Gen Silver 4214; both dates have passed. ESXi 8.0 hosts booting from the IDSDM/vFlash module also meet Dell's guidance that SD/USB boot devices are not recommended. Where those apply, look at the PowerEdge T550, the next model in the same line, or refurbished Dell PowerEdge servers.

  • Intel lists End of Servicing Updates for the Xeon Silver 4110 (1st Gen) as 2023-12-31. (intel.com)
  • Intel lists End of Servicing Updates for the Xeon Silver 4214 (2nd Gen) as 2025-06-30. (intel.com)
  • Dell's Windows Server matrix (Dec 2025) qualifies the T640 for Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016 (and 2012 R2). There is no Windows Server 2025 column for 14G. Dell has released no new Windows Server 2016 drivers since Feb 2022. (dl.dell.com)

The T640 shares Dell's 14G-wide statements on iDRAC9, Secure Boot BIOS and the Windows Server matrix with the rest of the generation; those are examined further in PowerEdge 14G end of life in depth. Its own lineage runs from the T630, the Xeon E5-2600 v3 (Haswell-EP) and Broadwell model that Dell's T640 Technical Guide uses for comparison (PowerEdge T630 end of life), to the PowerEdge T550 as the next model in the same line.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge T640

Is the PowerEdge T640 end of life?

There is no model-wide date to point to. The T640 row in Dell's Windows Server matrix (December 2025) carries the 14G note 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued', with no date beside it, and Dell does not publish End of Sale or End of Service Life dates at model level for PowerEdge. A unit's warranty or ProSupport end date sits behind its service tag.

When does Dell end support for the T640?

Dell has not set one date for the model; cover ends per service tag. The dated 14G milestone still ahead is for the iDRAC9 management controller, whose End of Software Maintenance is 1 February 2027, and it does not mark the end of T640 hardware cover.

Can I download T640 BIOS and iDRAC firmware for free?

Yes: Dell's downloads KB says all drivers and firmware for its servers are free, and the T640 BIOS 2.27.0 page, which also covers the OEMR T640, lets you skip the service tag. iDRAC firmware has a deadline: on 14G, iDRAC9 has had Sev1 security fixes only since July 2023, at Dell's discretion, and its End of Software Maintenance is 1 February 2027.

Can I add GPUs to an existing T640?

Dell's T640 spec sheet says the GPU options (four double-width or eight single-width) are available only in the rack form factor and must be ordered at initial purchase. Plan around the cards a unit already has.

What came after the Dell T640, and can I keep it on third-party maintenance?

The PowerEdge T550 follows as the next model in the same line. For units you keep, third-party maintenance generally provides diagnosis, parts and engineer visits beyond Dell cover; see Dell third-party maintenance to request a quote.
