| iDRAC9 firmware on 14G servers (management controller only): End of Feature Development | 30 June 2023 | Vendor-publishedDell: 'Feature development for iDRAC9 on 14th Generation PowerEdge servers ended on June 30, 2023.' Dell also says 'The last scheduled release of iDRAC9 firmware that includes 14G servers was version 7.00.00.000 on July 2023.' This milestone covers iDRAC9 firmware, not the server hardware. Dell lists the R240 among the affected products in its 14G BIOS/iDRAC9 KB 000215873 and under 'yx4x' in its ESXi 8.x matrix. | PowerEdge: Dell iDRAC9 Support and Management Guide for PowerEdge Servers (KB 000178016, last modified 1 Oct 2026) |
| iDRAC9 firmware on 14G servers (management controller only): End of Software Maintenance | 1 February 2027 | Vendor-publishedDell: 'Software maintenance for iDRAC9 will continue until February 01, 2027.' After this date 'iDRAC Engineering is no longer obligated to maintain or repair the firmware.' Dell's general definition says the planned End of Software Maintenance is 3 years after End of Feature Development. For 14G, though, the guide states 1 February 2027, and that stated date is the one used here. Every 14G build since July 2023 is listed as a 'Discretionary Sev1 security fix', from 7.00.00.171 (February 2024) to 7.00.00.185 (August 2026). | PowerEdge: Dell iDRAC9 Support and Management Guide for PowerEdge Servers (KB 000178016, last modified 1 Oct 2026) |
Where the PowerEdge R240 stands today
Dell's end-of-life product list (KB 000185734), whose spreadsheet was current as of 2 October 2026, covers converged infrastructure, storage and storage networking products and has no R240 row. The nearest thing to a model-level signal sits in Dell's Windows Server LTSC support matrix, dated December 2025, where the R240 row carries a *** marker pointing to the note 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued'. That note sets no support end date and does not say whether a particular R240 is still covered.
Dell's warranty and contract lookup answers that per Service Tag, showing coverage status and expiration (Dell KB 000132024). On the R240 the Service Tag and Express Service Code are on the pull-out information tag at the front of the system, or on the MEST label at the rear, according to Dell's R240 Technical Guide. Dell's iDRAC9 support guide (KB 000178016) records that feature development for iDRAC9 on 14G servers ended on 30 June 2023. Dell's general definition places planned End of Software Maintenance three years after End of Feature Development, but for 14G the guide states 1 February 2027, and that stated date is the one used here. Both apply to the iDRAC9 firmware rather than the server hardware.
Dell ties warranty and contract end dates to each server's Service Tag and publishes no model-wide date. Enter the Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see coverage status and expiration (Dell KB 000132024: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-gb/000132024). On the R240, the Service Tag and Express Service Code are on the pull-out information tag on the front of the system, or on the MEST label on the rear (R240 Technical Guide: https://i.dell.com/sites/csdocuments/Product_Docs/en/poweredge-r240-technical-guide.pdf). Renewals are requested at https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Dell notes that 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries'. Units bought through a reseller may need to be renewed through that reseller.
What still works after Dell support ends
An R240 without a Dell contract can still download Dell's released drivers and firmware. Dell states that 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website', and that 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' Dell's UK drivers page for the R240, as of 8 October 2026, offered BIOS 2.25.2 (Recommended, dated that day) and one iDRAC package, 7.00.00.185 ('Urgent', 28 August 2026). Dell's iDRAC9 versions KB still showed 7.00.00.183 for the R240 when last modified on 10 September 2026, so that KB lags the drivers page.
The limit Dell sets is on the management controller firmware. Since July 2023 every 14G iDRAC9 build, from 7.00.00.171 in February 2024 to 7.00.00.185 in August 2026, has been listed as a 'Discretionary Sev1 security fix', and after 1 February 2027 Dell's iDRAC Engineering 'is no longer obligated to maintain or repair the firmware'. Dell's hardware option is warranty renewal per Service Tag, which Dell says can 'cover Dell-branded hardware repairs or replacement parts'. Dell notes that 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries', and an R240 bought through a reseller may need renewing there.
- Dell: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' (dell.com)
- iDRAC firmware: 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' Dell also states 'iDRAC hardware is covered under the server hardware contract.' (dell.com)
- iDRAC9 software maintenance for 14G servers continues until 2027-02-01. After that date Dell's iDRAC Engineering 'is no longer obligated to maintain or repair the firmware'. Since July 2023, every 14G release has been a 'Discretionary Sev1 security fix'. (dell.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- Dell warranty renewal (per Service Tag) — Dell KB 000132024: 'Dell warranties can be renewed to cover Dell-branded hardware repairs or replacement parts'. Renewals are not available in all countries. Whether a given R240 can be renewed depends on its Service Tag. Dell publishes no model-wide cut-off. (dell.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R240
Power comes from a single cabled AC supply, either 250 W Bronze or 450 W Platinum, so the contract schedule should record which rating is fitted. Drives sit in four 3.5-inch hot-swappable SAS/SATA/SSD bays, or in a cabled layout of four or two 3.5-inch drives, and the backplane also takes four 2.5-inch drives. Storage control may be a PERC H730P or H330, an HBA330 or S140 software RAID, with a 12 Gb/s SAS HBA or HBA355e for external storage, and the contract should name the exact controller.
Memory is four DDR4 UDIMM slots running at 2666 MT/s, to a 64 GB maximum with 16 GB DIMMs. Dell's owner's manual notes that 3200 MT/s UDIMMs are compatible from BIOS 2.5.1 but run at 2666 MT/s, which matters when sourcing spares. Cards in the two PCIe Gen3 slots belong on the asset list too. Dell states that 'iDRAC hardware is covered under the server hardware contract', and a third-party agreement should include the iDRAC9 (with iDRAC Direct) in the same way. Server third-party maintenance generally provides diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, including after Dell cover ends, and a quote for a list of R240s can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R240?
Maintenance is reasonable for an R240 running a settled workload on an operating system Dell lists for it. Dell's ESXi 8.x compatibility matrix (Rev A13, March 2026) lists the R240 with Xeon E-2100/E-2200 CPUs for ESXi 8.0, 8.0 U1, 8.0 U2 and 8.0 U3. In the Windows Server matrix the R240 row ticks the Essentials and Standard editions of Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016, though not Datacenter; a 'Qualified' support level appears only in the 2022 column, and the 2019 and 2016 cells are blank. Dell's drivers page also carried a BIOS release for the R240 dated 8 October 2026.
The case for refresh rests on what comes next rather than on the hardware. Dell's Windows matrix has no Windows Server 2025 column for 14G servers, and its ESXi 9.x matrix (Rev A03, May 2026) covers only yx7x, yx6x and yx5x systems, so the R240 is not listed for ESXi 9.0 or 9.1. If either is on your roadmap, or if policy requires management controller firmware the vendor is obliged to maintain beyond 1 February 2027, replacement is the stronger option. The PowerEdge R250 is the next model in the same line, and refurbished Dell PowerEdge servers are another route.
- Windows Server: Dell's LTSC support matrix (PDF dated Dec 2025) has no Windows Server 2025 column for 14G servers. The R240 row ticks the Essentials and Standard editions (not Datacenter) of Windows Server 2022, 2019 and 2016. A 'Qualified' support level appears only in the Windows Server 2022 column. The 2019 and 2016 support-level cells are blank. The row carries the *** marker for 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued'. (dl.dell.com)
- VMware: Dell's ESXi 8.x compatibility matrix (Rev A13, March 2026) lists the R240 (Xeon E-2100/E-2200) for ESXi 8.0, 8.0 U1, 8.0 U2 and 8.0 U3. (dl.dell.com)
- VMware: Dell's ESXi 9.x compatibility matrix (Rev A03, May 2026) covers only yx7x, yx6x and yx5x systems. The R240 and other 14G (yx4x) servers are not listed for ESXi 9.0 or 9.1. (dl.dell.com)
- iDRAC9: on 8 Oct 2026, Dell's UK drivers page for the R240 offered a single iDRAC firmware package, 7.00.00.185 ('Urgent', dated 28 Aug 2026). That matches the latest 14G build in Dell's iDRAC9 support guide. Dell's iDRAC9 versions KB 000178115 (last modified 10 Sep 2026) still shows 7.00.00.183 for the R240, so that KB lags the download page. (dell.com)
- BIOS: on 8 Oct 2026, Dell's UK drivers page for the R240 offered 'Dell Server PowerEdge BIOS R340/R240/T340/T140' version 2.25.2 (Recommended, dated 08 Oct 2026). One BIOS package covers the R340, R240, T340 and T140. (dell.com)
- Dell still lists the R240 among affected products in 'PowerEdge: Recommended BIOS and iDRAC9 Updates for 14th Gen servers' (KB 000215873, last modified 23 Jun 2026). (dell.com)
- Spares: 3200 MT/s UDIMMs are compatible from BIOS 2.5.1 but run at 2666 MT/s. (dl.dell.com)

Related models
The R240 is one of five servers that Dell EMC Japan began selling on 5 December 2018, according to a trade-press report from Impress Cloud Watch, the others being the T140, T340, R340 and R740xd2. It shares one BIOS package with the R340, T340 and T140. Dell's R240 Technical Guide names the PowerEdge R230 as its predecessor. The same Service Tag lookup applies to any PowerEdge in a mixed estate, such as those on PowerEdge R430 end of life and PowerEdge R630 end of life.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R240
Is the Dell PowerEdge R240 end of life?
Dell gives no model-wide date for it: PowerEdge servers get no model-wide end-of-sale or end-of-service-life date from Dell, so each R240 is supported to the date recorded against its Service Tag. The R240 row in Dell's December 2025 Windows Server matrix does carry a *** marker pointing to the note 'Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued', but that note gives no date.
When does Dell stop supporting the R240?
There is no single date for the model. Check your unit by entering its Service Tag in Dell's warranty lookup; on the R240 the tag is on the pull-out information tag at the front or the MEST label at the rear. The 14G date in Dell's iDRAC9 support guide that still lies ahead is for the management controller: software maintenance for iDRAC9 continues until 1 February 2027, and that date applies to the management controller firmware alone.
Can I still download BIOS and firmware for the R240?
Yes. Dell says all drivers and firmware for its servers are free to download from Dell Support, and that released iDRAC firmware is available regardless of support contract. On 8 October 2026 the R240 drivers page offered BIOS 2.25.2 and iDRAC 7.00.00.185.
Does the R240 support Windows Server 2025 or ESXi 9?
Dell's December 2025 Windows Server matrix has no Windows Server 2025 column for 14G servers, and Dell's May 2026 ESXi 9.x matrix does not list the R240 for ESXi 9.0 or 9.1. Dell does list it for ESXi 8.0 through 8.0 U3, and ticks Windows Server 2016, 2019 and 2022 in the Essentials and Standard editions, with 'Qualified' shown only for 2022.
What came after the PowerEdge R240?
The PowerEdge R250 is the next model in the same line. Looking back instead, Dell's R240 Technical Guide names the PowerEdge R230 as the R240's predecessor.
