The published month is used; no date is derived from the policy. | Dell KB 000178044: PowerEdge: Support for Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 8 |
Where the PowerEdge R630 stands today
One explanation for the gap comes from Dell support. Replying on the Dell Community forum in February 2025, a member of Dell Technologies Enterprise Support Services wrote that 'as of about the 13th generation of servers, Dell stopped presenting EOL and EOSL dates for the Poweredge lines'; the reply answered an R550 question and is not a formal policy document. What Dell does date is the controller: iDRAC8 End of Sale in December 2021 and iDRAC8 End of Software Maintenance in February 2024. The KB giving both months names no server models, so neither is the R630's end of support.
Your own R630's position comes from its Service Tag. The tag and its Express Service Code are on the pull-out information tag at the front of the server, or on a sticker on the chassis. Enter the Service Tag on Dell's Check Warranty Status page to see that unit's warranty status and expiry date, and use Dell's warranty-extension request form to ask about renewal. Dell notes that renewals are not available in all countries and that a unit bought through a reseller may need to renew through that reseller.
Dell ties support to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The Service Tag and Express Service Code are on the pull-out information tag on the front of the R630, or on a sticker on the chassis (R630 Owner's Manual: https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r630_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the Service Tag on Dell's Check Warranty Status page, https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/, to see warranty status and expiry date. To ask about renewal, use https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Dell notes renewals are not available in all countries, and units bought through a reseller may need to renew through that reseller (Dell KB 000132024: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132024).
What still works after Dell support ends
Dell does not put R630 firmware behind a contract. Its support KB says 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website', and the iDRAC8 KB adds that 'iDRAC firmware support is not tied to the hardware support contract'. The last iDRAC8 firmware is 2.86.86.86. For the period after iDRAC8 End of Sale, the KB says there is no planned feature release and that security updates and issue fixes are addressed on an as-needed basis; since End of Software Maintenance in February 2024, iDRAC Engineering is no longer obligated to maintain or repair the firmware.
For the system BIOS, Dell's public advisory DSA-2024-006, first published on 12 March 2024, lists R630 BIOS versions before 2.19.0 as affected and gives 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the fix. Two pieces of Dell tooling do not cover the R630. Dell System Update for ESXi 7.x and 8.x does not support 13th-generation servers, because iDRAC8 lacks the passthrough feature it needs. OpenManage Server Administrator's final release, on 30 September 2024, 'only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', and Dell's suggested replacement is iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module.
- No support contract is needed for PowerEdge firmware. Dell: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' (dell.com)
- iDRAC8: 'iDRAC firmware support is not tied to the hardware support contract' and 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' The last iDRAC8 firmware is 2.86.86.86. Since End of Software Maintenance (February 2024), Dell is not obligated to fix iDRAC8 firmware. (dell.com)
- Dell security advisories are public. DSA-2024-006 (first published 2024-03-12) lists PowerEdge R630 BIOS versions before 2.19.0 as affected and 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the fix. (dell.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R630
A contract on an R630 has to start from which of its three chassis you own: eight 2.5-inch bays, ten 2.5-inch bays with up to four NVMe PCIe SSDs, or twenty-four 1.8-inch SATA SSDs, so record the chassis and not just the model name. Storage control varies as well: PERC S130 software RAID, or an H330, H730 or H730P controller internally, with a PERC H830 or 12Gbps SAS HBA where external storage is attached.
Power is up to two redundant AC or DC supplies, chosen from 495 W, 750 W (Platinum or Titanium) or 1100 W AC, or 1100 W DC. The embedded NIC is one of three fits, 4 x 1GbE, 2 x 1GbE plus 2 x 10GbE, or 4 x 10GbE, and memory spans 24 DDR4 sockets of RDIMMs or LRDIMMs, up to 1,536 GB with 64 GB LRDIMMs and two processors. Add the iDRAC8 level (Express as standard, or the Enterprise upgrade) and any 8 GB or 16 GB vFlash card, then request a quote through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R630?
Keeping an R630 on maintenance is reasonable when it runs an operating system Dell's matrix ticks for it, Windows Server 2019 or 2016 (Standard and Datacenter, with 2012 R2 and 2012 shown as Qualified), and is kept on current released BIOS and iDRAC8 firmware. Once the Dell warranty on its Service Tag has expired, Dell third-party maintenance generally provides diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits.
Refresh pressure comes from the software stack. The 13G table in Dell's Windows Server matrix has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 columns, and the matrix says 2022 and later require TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R630 with E5-26xx v3 and v4 as supported on ESXi 7.0 to 7.0 U3, booting from hard drive or SD card but not BOSS, and Broadcom ended general support for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x on 2 October 2025. Dell's vSphere 8.0 certification KB does not name the R630, so check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning ESXi 8. CPU microcode servicing is a further limit: Intel's ARK shows two example SKUs, the Xeon E5-2620 v3 and E5-2620 v4, at 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 31 December 2021 and 30 June 2022 respectively, so look up the exact part fitted. The PowerEdge R640 is the next model in the same line.
- Windows Server: Dell's LTSC support matrix lists the R630 under '13G and older discontinued platforms'. It ticks Windows Server 2019 and 2016 (Standard/Datacenter) and Windows Server 2012 R2/2012 (Qualified). The 13G table has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 columns. The same matrix states that Windows Server 2022 and later require TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. (dl.dell.com)
- VMware: Dell's 'VMware vSphere 7.x on Dell PowerEdge Systems Compatibility Matrix' (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R630 with E5-26xx v3 and v4 as supported on ESXi 7.0, 7.0 U1, 7.0 U2 and 7.0 U3. It can boot from hard drive or SD card, but not BOSS. (dl.dell.com)
- Broadcom ended general support for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x on 2 October 2025. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Dell's KB 'PowerEdge: Servers certified for VMware vSphere 8.0' says Dell certified 48+ servers and refers readers to the VMware/Broadcom compatibility guide for the full list. Its product list names 14th-generation and later models (e.g. R640) and does not name the R630. Check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning an ESXi 8 upgrade. (dell.com)
- Dell System Update (DSU) for ESXi 7.x/8.x does not support 13th-generation servers, because iDRAC8 lacks the required passthrough feature. The R630 is in the KB's product list. (dell.com)
- OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) had its final release on 30 September 2024 and is in sustenance mode until 30 September 2027. Dell says that last release 'only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', so 13G is excluded. Dell's suggested replacement is iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module. (dell.com)
- CPU microcode servicing (v3): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v3, an example E5-2600 v3 SKU, with Servicing Status 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 2021-12-31. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
- CPU microcode servicing (v4): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v4, an example E5-2600 v4 SKU, with Servicing Status 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 2022-06-30. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
- Intel defines the End of Servicing Updates date as the point where it 'concludes Baseline Servicing to the broad market'. Intel says Extended Servicing is 'exclusively available to customers who have an existing extended servicing agreement with Intel or who enter into such an agreement.' (intel.com)

Related models
Dell's 8 September 2014 press release named the R630, with the R730, R730xd, M630 and T630, as the first 13G servers, all on Xeon E5-2600 v3. Three of that first wave have their own pages in this series: the PowerEdge R730, the PowerEdge R730xd and the PowerEdge T630. By Dell's naming, the 12th-generation R620, a 1U two-socket server, came before the R630.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R630
Is the Dell R630 end of life?
Dell has published no model-wide end-of-life or end-of-service-life date for the PowerEdge R630. Its Windows Server support matrix lists the R630 under '13G and older discontinued platforms' but gives no date, and support for each unit is set by its own Service Tag.
How do I check the warranty on my R630?
Find the Service Tag on the pull-out information tag at the front of the server or on the chassis sticker, then enter it on Dell's Check Warranty Status page. That shows the warranty status and expiry date for that specific unit. Renewal requests go through Dell's warranty-extension form, though renewals are not available in every country.
Can I still download firmware for the R630 without a support contract?
Yes. Dell's position is that all drivers and firmware for its servers are free to download from the Dell Support website, and that iDRAC firmware support is not tied to the hardware support contract. The last iDRAC8 firmware is 2.86.86.86, and Dell has not been obligated to fix iDRAC8 firmware since February 2024.
What came after the PowerEdge R630?
The PowerEdge R640 is the next model in the same line. Dell's vSphere 8.0 certification KB names the R640 but not the R630, which matters if an ESXi upgrade is part of your plan.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a Dell R630?
Third-party maintenance generally provides fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers, and it can continue after a unit's Dell warranty has expired. For an R630 the cover should be scoped to your chassis, PERC controller, NIC and power supplies. A quote can be requested for the R630s you run.
