Dell PowerEdge R230 end of life

Dell has not published a model-wide end-of-life date for the PowerEdge R230; it ties support to each unit's Service Tag instead. Dell's published wording places the 13th generation in an undated 'end-of-service status', and the R230's embedded iDRAC8 controller reached End of Software Maintenance in February 2024. On a 1U server with one non-redundant power supply, the practical questions are the unit's Service Tag, its power and the software it has to run.

PowerEdge R230 support dates

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the PowerEdge R230 stands today

Dell's formal position on the R230 comes from two undated documents. Its December 2025 Windows Server OS support matrix lists the R230 in a table headed '13G and older discontinued platforms', and its Secure Boot KB says '12th and 13th Generation Server platforms will not receive updates due to end-of-service status' without naming the R230. A Dell staff reply on Dell's community forum in February 2025, answering a question about another model, said Dell stopped presenting EOL and EOSL dates 'as of about the 13th generation'; that is a forum answer, not a formal policy document. The dated Dell milestones belong to the iDRAC8 management controller, End of Sale in December 2021 and End of Software Maintenance in February 2024, and neither is the R230's end of support.

Dell ties support to the Service Tag, so the date that counts is your own unit's. According to the R230 Owner's Manual, the Service Tag and Express Service Code are on the information tag that pulls out from the front of the system, or may be on a sticker on the chassis; enter the tag at Dell's contract-services page (dell.com/support/contractservices) to see warranty status and expiry. Renewal questions go to Dell's extend-warranty form; Dell notes that 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries', and units bought through a reseller may need renewing through that reseller.

Finding the date for your own unit

Dell ties support to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The R230 Owner's Manual says the Service Tag and Express Service Code are found on the front of the system by pulling out the information tag, or may be on a sticker on the chassis (https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r230_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see warranty status and expiry date. To ask about renewal, use https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Dell says 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries', and 'If you have purchased your products through a reseller partner, you may need to contact the reseller for renewal' (Dell KB 000132024: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132024).

What still works after Dell support ends

Dell's published drivers and firmware remain open to an R230 owner: Dell states that 'all drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website'. Its advisory DSA-2024-006 lists R230 BIOS versions prior to 2.20.0 as affected by CVE-2024-0161, with 2.20.0 or later as the remediation. For the controller, Dell says 'released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract'; 2.86.86.86 is the last iDRAC8 release, and Dell has no obligation to fix iDRAC8 firmware after February 2024.

Secure Boot is the gap Dell will not close for the R230. Dell says 12th and 13th generation platforms will not receive Secure Boot certificate updates, and its Secure Boot BIOS guidance covers 14th to 16th generation servers with no R230 row. Dell said the Microsoft Secure Boot 2011 certificates would begin expiring in June 2026; it says 'expired certificates do not impact an already installed OS', but lists 'potential boot failures if Secure Boot is disabled or BIOS defaults are reset'. Monitoring has narrowed too: OpenManage Server Administrator's final release, on 30 September 2024, supports only 14th, 15th and 16th generation servers, and Dell names iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module as the alternative.

  • Dell says PowerEdge drivers and firmware are free to download: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' (KB 'PowerEdge: Methods and Steps to Update Firmware and Drivers', modified 31 Aug 2026.) (dell.com)
  • iDRAC8: 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' Dell: 'The last release of iDRAC8 firmware is version 2.86.86.86.' Dell has no obligation to fix iDRAC8 firmware after February 2024. (dell.com)
  • Dell security advisories are public. DSA-2024-006 (CVE-2024-0161; revision 1.0 initial release 2024-03-12, latest revision 7.0 of 2025-06-30) lists PowerEdge R230 BIOS 'Versions prior to 2.20.0' as affected and 'Version 2.20.0 or later' as the remediation. (dell.com)
  • No Secure Boot certificate BIOS update is coming for 13G. Dell: '12th and 13th Generation Server platforms will not receive updates due to end-of-service status.' Dell's 'Server BIOS Update Guidelines for Microsoft Secure Boot Certificates' (KB 000402373, https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000402373) covers 14th to 16th generation servers only and has no R230 row. What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R230

Power defines an R230 contract. The Owner's Manual lists every drive configuration with one 250 W Bronze non-redundant cabled PSU, so a supply fault takes the server down and the service level rests on fitting a new PSU, not on a second one. Drive layouts differ between units (up to two or up to four 3.5-inch cabled drives, or up to four 3.5-inch hot-swap drives, with 2.5-inch hot-swap drives in 3.5-inch adapters), so record each Service Tag's layout.

Name the storage controller too: PERC S130 software RAID, or a PERC H330, H730 or H830. Memory is four DDR4 unbuffered DIMM (UDIMM) sockets, 64 GB maximum. The rest is one Xeon E3-1200 v5 or v6, Core i3 6100, Celeron or Pentium processor, two PCIe 3.0 slots, two 1GbE LOM ports on a Broadcom 5720, and iDRAC8 Express or Enterprise with optional 8 GB or 16 GB vFlash. Server third-party maintenance generally covers hardware like this with fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, including past a unit's vendor warranty.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R230?

Keeping an R230 on maintenance is reasonable when it does a contained, low-exposure job, the business can tolerate the outage a PSU swap involves, and its BIOS is at 2.20.0 or later. Check the Service Tag first. On warranty length, a Dell staff reply on Dell's community forum in October 2025 said 'it is pretty standard that a server can be warrantied up to 5 years from the ship date', and that this 'can be extended on some basis, but that is based on part availability'; that is forum guidance, not policy.

Refresh is the stronger answer once the operating system or security baseline matters. For the R230, Dell's Windows Server matrix ticks the 2019 and 2016 Essentials and Standard columns (not Datacenter), yet the 'Support Level' cells for both versions are blank, and the matrix's notes read 'Blank cells indicate no support'; 'Qualified' appears only against Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2012. The 13G table has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 column, and the matrix says Windows Server 2022 and later need TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. Dell's R230 supported-OS page stops at ESXi 6.7, for which Broadcom gives an End of General Support date of 15 October 2022. On the processor side, Intel ARK shows the Xeon E3-1220 v5 and v6, example parts from each family, with End of Servicing Updates dates of 30 September 2022 and 31 March 2024; check ARK for the exact SKU fitted. The PowerEdge R240 is the next model in the same line, and the refurbished PowerEdge configurator can be used to spec an alternative.

  • No power redundancy. The R230 takes a single 250 W non-redundant cabled PSU in every configuration the Owner's Manual lists, so a PSU failure takes the server down and a maintenance SLA cannot rely on a second PSU. (dl.dell.com)
  • Windows Server: Dell's LTSC matrix (Dec 2025) lists the R230 under '13G and older discontinued platforms'. It ticks the Windows Server 2019 and 2016 Essentials and Standard edition columns (not Datacenter) and the Windows Server 2012 R2/2012 Foundation, Essentials and Standard columns. Only the Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2012 'Support Level' cells read 'Qualified'; the 2019 and 2016 'Support Level' cells are blank, and the matrix notes say 'Blank cells indicate no support.' The 13G table has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 columns, and the matrix says Windows Server 2022 and later require TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. (dl.dell.com)
  • Microsoft lists Windows Server 2019's Extended End Date as '1/10/2029 6:59:59 AM' (US month/day order, i.e. 10 January 2029 as displayed). Windows Server 2019 is the newest Windows Server in Dell's 13G matrix table and on Dell's R230 supported-OS page. (learn.microsoft.com)
  • VMware: Dell's R230 supported-OS page goes up to VMware ESXi 6.7. The R230 is not in the 13G (yx3x) table of Dell's vSphere 7.x compatibility matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024; https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/vmware-esxi-7x_compatibility-matrix_en-us.pdf). (dell.com)

  • Secure Boot: Dell says 'Microsoft Secure Boot 2011 certificates begin expiring in June 2026' and '12th and 13th Generation Server platforms will not receive updates due to end-of-service status'. Dell: 'Expired certificates do not impact an already installed OS—those systems continue to boot'. Among the effects of expired certificates Dell lists 'Inability to receive Secure Boot-related updates' and 'Potential boot failures if Secure Boot is disabled or BIOS defaults are reset'. (dell.com)
  • OMSA had its final release on 30 September 2024, and Dell says 'the last OMSA release only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', so 13G is excluded. Dell points to iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module (iSM) instead. (dell.com)
  • CPU microcode servicing (v5): Intel ARK shows the Xeon E3-1220 v5, an example E3-1200 v5 SKU, with servicing status 'End of Servicing Lifetime' and an End of Servicing Updates date of 30 September 2022. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
  • CPU microcode servicing (v6): Intel ARK shows the Xeon E3-1220 v6, an example E3-1200 v6 SKU, with servicing status 'End of Servicing Updates' and an End of Servicing Updates date of 31 March 2024. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)

Dell's R230 spec sheet compares it with the previous-generation PowerEdge R220, saying the R230 'delivers greater memory capacity, more hard drives and I/O slots', and Dell's 'Servers by generation' KB lists it as a 13th-generation Intel system with iDRAC8. Dell's undated end-of-service wording covers the 13th generation as a whole, so it applies equally to other 13G rack servers; see the PowerEdge R430 end-of-life page and the PowerEdge R630 end-of-life page.

Each bar runs from release to the milestone that marks end of support for the model as a whole. Amber bars end on a third-party tracker's date, not the vendor's. A dashed open end means no end date is published — not that support is indefinite. Component and accessory dates (a management controller, a power module) are not treated as the model's.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R230

Is the Dell PowerEdge R230 end of life?

Dell has not published a model-wide end-of-life or end-of-service-life date for the R230. Its Windows Server matrix lists the R230 under '13G and older discontinued platforms', and Dell describes the 13th generation as being in 'end-of-service status', but neither gives a date. Each unit's support position comes from its own Service Tag.

When does Dell stop supporting the R230?

There is no single Dell date for the model. Dell ties warranty and support to each unit's Service Tag, so the contract-services lookup for that tag is where an individual R230's position shows. The fixed dates Dell does publish, End of Sale in December 2021 and End of Software Maintenance in February 2024, belong to the iDRAC8 management controller, not to the whole server.

Can I still download BIOS and firmware for the R230?

Yes. Dell says all drivers and firmware for Dell servers are free to download from the Dell Support website, and that released iDRAC firmware is available regardless of support contract; 2.86.86.86 is the last iDRAC8 version. DSA-2024-006 gives R230 BIOS 2.20.0 or later as the remediation for CVE-2024-0161. What Dell will not release is a Secure Boot certificate BIOS update for 13G servers.

What came after the PowerEdge R230?

The PowerEdge R240 is the next model in the same line. Looking back, Dell's R230 spec sheet compares the R230 with the previous-generation PowerEdge R220. If you are weighing a newer machine against keeping an R230, compare options among refurbished Dell PowerEdge servers.

Can I get third-party maintenance for a PowerEdge R230?

Third-party maintenance for a server of this kind typically covers diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits, and can run after a unit's Dell warranty has ended. Because every R230 configuration in Dell's Owner's Manual has a single non-redundant PSU, the quote should state how a power-supply failure is handled. You can request one through the maintenance coverage builder.
