Where the PowerEdge R730 stands today
On an R730 the Service Tag and Express Service Code sit on the pull-out information tag at the front of the system, or on a chassis sticker. Put the Service Tag into Dell's Check Warranty Status page and it returns that server's warranty status and expiry date. Dell takes extension requests through its warranty-extension form, but renewals are not offered in every country, and an R730 bought through a reseller may have to be renewed through that reseller.
Dell support has addressed the missing date informally: in February 2025 a Dell Enterprise Support Services staff member replied on the Dell Community forum that Dell stopped presenting EOL and EOSL dates for the PowerEdge lines from about the 13th generation. That was a forum answer to an R550 question, not a policy document. Two iDRAC8 dates are published, in a KB that names no server models: End of Sale in December 2021 and End of Software Maintenance in February 2024. Both describe the management controller inside the R730, not the server as a whole.
Dell ties support to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The Service Tag and Express Service Code are on the pull-out information tag on the front of the system, or on a chassis sticker (see the R730 Owner's Manual, https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r730_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see warranty status and expiry date. To ask about renewal, use https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Renewals are not available in all countries, and reseller-sold units may need to renew through the reseller (Dell KB 000132024: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132024).
What still works after Dell support ends
An out-of-warranty R730 is not cut off from updates. Dell says plainly that 'all drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website', and for iDRAC8 that 'released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract'. What has changed is Dell's obligation to maintain the controller firmware: the final iDRAC8 build is 2.86.86.86, and since February 2024 Dell has been under no obligation to maintain or repair it. On the BIOS side, Dell's public advisory DSA-2024-006 (first published 12 March 2024) names R730 BIOS versions below 2.19.0 as affected, with 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the remedy.
Two Dell management tools leave 13G out. The ESXi 7.x and 8.x edition of Dell System Update excludes 13th-generation servers, as it relies on a passthrough feature that iDRAC8 does not have. OpenManage Server Administrator (OMSA) had its final release on 30 September 2024, and that release 'only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers'; OMSA remains in sustenance mode until 30 September 2027, and Dell points to iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module instead.
- No support contract is needed for PowerEdge firmware. Dell: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' (dell.com)
- iDRAC8: 'iDRAC firmware support is not tied to the hardware support contract' and 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' The last iDRAC8 firmware is 2.86.86.86. Since End of Software Maintenance (February 2024), Dell is not obligated to fix iDRAC8 firmware. (dell.com)
- Dell security advisories are public. DSA-2024-006 (first published 2024-03-12) lists PowerEdge R730 BIOS versions before 2.19.0 as affected and 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the fix. (dell.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R730
The 2U R730 has several variables a contract must pin down. Drive bays come as up to eight 3.5-inch (or 2.5-inch) hot-swap bays or up to sixteen 2.5-inch hot-swap bays, taking SAS, SATA, nearline SAS or SSD, with an optional SATA optical drive. The chassis has up to seven PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated PERC slot, and storage runs on PERC S130 software RAID or an H330, H730 or H730P controller, with a PERC H830 or a 12Gbps SAS HBA for external storage. Up to two redundant AC or DC supplies can be fitted, in 495 W, 750 W (Platinum or Titanium) or 1100 W AC form, or 1100 W DC. The 24 DDR4 sockets reach 3,072 GB with 128 GB LRDIMMs and two processors, or 768 GB with RDIMMs.
GPU-equipped R730s need noting separately. Dell's Owner's Manual requires both processors, processors of 135 W or less fitted with the GPU kit's low-profile heat sink, and a GPU enablement kit, and it restricts inlet temperature to 30°C once GPUs are installed. A schedule for server third-party maintenance should list those parts alongside the drives, controller, supplies and the iDRAC8 tier (Express, or the Enterprise upgrade, with any vFlash card).

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R730?
Extending an R730 on maintenance makes sense when it hosts Windows Server 2019 or 2016, both ticked for it in Standard and Datacenter editions in Dell's matrix (2012 R2 and 2012 appear as Qualified). Once a Service Tag's Dell warranty has lapsed, third-party cover such as an alternative to Dell ProSupport generally provides diagnosis, parts and engineers for that unit.
The refresh argument is strongest for virtualised R730s. Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R730 with E5-26xx v3 and v4 as supported on ESXi 7.0 through 7.0 U3, and general support from Broadcom for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x ended on 2 October 2025. Dell's vSphere 8.0 KB lists 14th-generation models such as the R740 and R740XD, not the R730, so confirm the position in the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before any ESXi 8 plan. Windows Server 2022 and 2025 have no column in the 13G table, with TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot named in the matrix as requirements for 2022 and later. Intel's ARK places example processors at 'End of Servicing Updates', the E5-2620 v3 from 31 December 2021 and the E5-2620 v4 from 30 June 2022; check the SKU in your own server. The PowerEdge R740 is the next model in the same line.
- Windows Server: Dell's LTSC support matrix lists the R730 under '13G and older discontinued platforms'. It ticks Windows Server 2019 and 2016 (Standard/Datacenter) and Windows Server 2012 R2/2012 (Qualified). The 13G table has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 columns. The matrix states that Windows Server 2022 and later require TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. (dl.dell.com)
- VMware: Dell's vSphere 7.x compatibility matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R730 with E5-26xx v3 and v4 as supported on ESXi 7.0 through 7.0 U3. It can boot from hard drive or SD card, but not BOSS. (dl.dell.com)
- Broadcom ended general support for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x on 2 October 2025. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Dell's KB 'PowerEdge: Servers certified for VMware vSphere 8.0' refers readers to the VMware/Broadcom compatibility guide for the full list. Its product list names 14th-generation and later models (e.g. R740, R740XD) and does not name the R730. Check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning an ESXi 8 upgrade. (dell.com)
- Dell System Update (DSU) for ESXi 7.x/8.x does not support 13th-generation servers (iDRAC8 lacks the passthrough feature it needs). The R730 is in the KB's product list. (dell.com)
- OMSA had its final release on 30 September 2024 and is in sustenance mode until 30 September 2027. That last release 'only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', so 13G is excluded. Dell points to iDRAC plus the iDRAC Service Module instead. (dell.com)
- Adding a GPU: the R730 Owner's Manual requires both processors installed, processors of 135 W or less with the GPU kit low-profile heat sink, and a GPU enablement kit. Inlet temperature is restricted to 30°C when GPUs are fitted. (dl.dell.com)
- CPU microcode servicing (v3): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v3, an example E5-2600 v3 SKU, as 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 2021-12-31. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
- CPU microcode servicing (v4): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v4, an example E5-2600 v4 SKU, as 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 2022-06-30. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
- Intel defines the End of Servicing Updates date as the point where it 'concludes Baseline Servicing to the broad market'. Intel says Extended Servicing is 'exclusively available to customers who have an existing extended servicing agreement with Intel or who enter into such an agreement.' (intel.com)

Related models
Dell's press release of 8 September 2014 put the R730 among the first 13G servers, on Xeon E5-2600 v3, and said the new PowerEdge servers would begin shipping that day; the 2U rack chassis takes up to two Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors. This series also has pages for the PowerEdge R730xd and the PowerEdge R630. Dell's naming makes the 12th-generation R720, a 2U two-socket server, the R730's predecessor.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R730
Is the Dell PowerEdge R730 end of life?
Dell publishes no model-wide end-of-life or EOSL date for the R730. It appears in Dell's Windows Server matrix under '13G and older discontinued platforms' with no date attached, and each unit's support runs to the expiry shown for its Service Tag.
When does Dell stop supporting the R730?
There is no single date. Dell ties support to each unit's Service Tag, so enter the tag on Dell's Check Warranty Status page to see that server's warranty expiry. The two lifecycle dates Dell does publish are for the iDRAC8 controller, not the server: December 2021 (End of Sale) and February 2024 (End of Software Maintenance).
Is the R730 certified for ESXi 8?
Dell's vSphere 8.0 certification KB names 14th-generation models such as the R740 but does not name the R730, and it refers readers to the Broadcom Compatibility Guide for the full list, so check that guide before planning an upgrade. Dell's own 7.x matrix lists the R730 on ESXi 7.0 through 7.0 U3, and Broadcom ended general support for ESXi 7.x on 2 October 2025.
Can I put a GPU in a PowerEdge R730?
Dell's Owner's Manual sets the conditions: both processors fitted, processors of 135 W or less with the GPU kit's low-profile heat sink, and a GPU enablement kit. Inlet temperature is limited to 30°C when GPUs are installed.
Can I get third-party maintenance for an R730?
The usual scope of a third-party contract is fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer attendance, and such cover can run past the end of a unit's Dell warranty. For an R730 the quote should reflect your drive layout, PERC controller, power supplies and any GPU kit. You can request a quote for the units you have.
