Where the PowerEdge R730xd stands today
Dell publishes no model-wide End of Sale or End of Service Life date for the R730xd. The closest Dell has come to explaining the absence is a February 2025 reply on the Dell Community forum, in a thread about the R550, from a member of its Enterprise Support Services team: from about the 13th generation, the reply said, Dell stopped presenting EOL and EOSL dates for the PowerEdge lines. That is a forum post rather than formal policy. The dates Dell does give belong to the iDRAC8 controller: End of Sale in December 2021, End of Software Maintenance in February 2024. Both come from a KB naming no server models; they are controller milestones, not the end of R730xd support.
Each R730xd's actual position sits on Dell's Check Warranty Status page. The Service Tag, with its Express Service Code, is on the pull-out information tag at the front of the server or on a chassis sticker; enter the tag and Dell returns the warranty status and expiry date for that unit. Extensions are requested through Dell's warranty-extension form, though not every country offers renewals and reseller-bought units may need to go back to the reseller.
Dell ties support to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The Service Tag and Express Service Code are on the pull-out information tag on the front of the server, or on a chassis sticker (Owner's Manual: https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r730xd_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see warranty status and expiry date. To ask about renewal, use https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Renewals are not available in all countries, and reseller-sold units may need to renew via the reseller (Dell KB 000132024: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132024).
What still works after Dell support ends
Dell's KB states that every driver and firmware release for Dell servers can be downloaded free from the Dell Support website, and the iDRAC8 KB says 'released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract'. The last iDRAC8 release is 2.86.86.86, and Dell is not obligated to fix iDRAC8 firmware after February 2024. Dell's public advisory DSA-2024-006, first published 12 March 2024, lists R730xd BIOS versions earlier than 2.19.0 as affected and 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the fix.
Management software coverage is narrower. OMSA's last release, dated 30 September 2024, 'only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', which leaves the R730xd out; OMSA itself stays in sustenance mode until 30 September 2027, and Dell recommends iDRAC plus the iDRAC Service Module in its place. Nor does the ESXi 7.x/8.x build of Dell System Update cover this server: Dell's KB on that tool lists the R730xd among the 13th-generation systems it does not support.
- No support contract is needed for PowerEdge firmware. Dell: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' (dell.com)
- iDRAC8: 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' The last iDRAC8 firmware is 2.86.86.86. Dell is not obligated to fix iDRAC8 firmware after February 2024. (dell.com)
- Dell security advisories are public. DSA-2024-006 (first published 2024-03-12) lists PowerEdge R730xd BIOS versions before 2.19.0 as affected and 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the fix. (dell.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R730xd
The R730xd comes in five chassis layouts, and a maintenance schedule has to name the exact one. Dell's Owner's Manual lists 12 x 3.5-inch with 2 rear 2.5-inch bays; 12 x 3.5-inch plus a 4 x 3.5-inch mid-tray and 2 rear 2.5-inch; 24 x 2.5-inch with 2 rear 2.5-inch; 20 x 2.5-inch plus 4 U.2 NVMe drives in slots 20 to 23, with 2 optional rear bays; or 18 x 1.8-inch plus 8 x 3.5-inch with 2 rear 2.5-inch. Mid-tray and rear bays put drives where a glance at the front panel will not show them, so count every bay when the asset list is drawn up.
Storage runs on internal PERC H330, H730 or H730P controllers, with a PERC H830 or 12Gbps SAS HBA for external storage, and the chassis has up to six PCIe 3.0 slots plus a dedicated RAID card slot. Its PSU bays take up to two redundant units, AC or DC: 495 W, 750 W (Platinum or Titanium) and 1100 W AC versions, plus an 1100 W DC version. Memory tops out at 3,072 GB using 128 GB LRDIMMs with two processors, or 768 GB using RDIMMs, across 24 DDR4 sockets. Include the iDRAC8 tier (Express or the Enterprise upgrade) and any vFlash card when you ask about hardware break-fix support.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R730xd?
Extending an R730xd makes most sense where it works as a storage host on an operating system Dell's matrix still ticks for it: Windows Server 2019 or 2016 in Standard or Datacenter edition, with 2012 R2 and 2012 listed as Qualified. Once its Dell warranty has expired, the main need is break-fix cover: diagnosis, replacement parts including drives, and engineer visits (see what third-party maintenance covers).
vSAN is where the case turns. Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R730xd with E5-26xx v3 and v4 as supported on ESXi 7.0 to 7.0 U3, and Broadcom's general support for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x ended on 2 October 2025, which bears directly on R730xd units used as vSAN nodes. Dell's vSphere 8.0 KB lists the R740XD and later rather than the R730xd, so check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before assuming an ESXi 8 path. On Windows, the 13G table has no 2022 or 2025 columns, and Dell's matrix requires TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot for Windows Server 2022 onwards. Intel also lists example E5-2600 parts at 'End of Servicing Updates', the E5-2620 v3 (31 December 2021) and E5-2620 v4 (30 June 2022); check ARK for the exact processor fitted. The PowerEdge R740xd is the next model in the same line.
- Windows Server: Dell's LTSC support matrix lists the R730xd under '13G and older discontinued platforms'. It ticks Windows Server 2019 and 2016 (Standard/Datacenter) and Windows Server 2012 R2/2012 (Qualified). The 13G table has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 columns. Windows Server 2022+ needs TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot per the same matrix. (dl.dell.com)
- VMware: Dell's vSphere 7.x compatibility matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R730xd with E5-26xx v3 and v4 as supported on ESXi 7.0 through 7.0 U3. It can boot from hard drive or SD card, but not BOSS. (dl.dell.com)
- Broadcom ended general support for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x on 2 October 2025. This matters for R730xd units used as vSAN nodes. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Dell's KB 'PowerEdge: Servers certified for VMware vSphere 8.0' refers readers to the VMware/Broadcom compatibility guide for the full list. Its product list names the R740XD (14G) and later, not the R730xd. Check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning an ESXi 8 upgrade. (dell.com)
- Dell System Update (DSU) for ESXi 7.x/8.x does not support 13th-generation servers. The R730xd is in the KB's product list. (dell.com)
- OMSA's final release (30 September 2024) 'only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', so 13G is excluded. OMSA is in sustenance mode until 30 September 2027, and Dell points to iDRAC plus the iDRAC Service Module instead. (dell.com)
- CPU microcode servicing (v3): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v3, an example E5-2600 v3 SKU, as 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 2021-12-31. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
- CPU microcode servicing (v4): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v4, an example E5-2600 v4 SKU, as 'End of Servicing Updates', dated 2022-06-30. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
- Intel defines the End of Servicing Updates date as the point where it 'concludes Baseline Servicing to the broad market'. Intel says Extended Servicing is 'exclusively available to customers who have an existing extended servicing agreement with Intel or who enter into such an agreement.' (intel.com)

Related models
The R730xd was part of the first wave of 13G servers that Dell's 8 September 2014 press release said would begin shipping that day. Other models in this series include the PowerEdge R730 and the PowerEdge T630, each with its own page. By Dell's naming, the R730xd's 12th-generation counterpart was the R720xd, a 2U storage-dense server.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R730xd
Is the Dell R730xd end of life?
Not by any Dell model-wide date: Dell has published no end-of-life or EOSL date for the PowerEdge R730xd. Its Windows Server matrix files the R730xd under '13G and older discontinued platforms' without a date, and each unit's support follows the warranty or contract on its Service Tag.
Is the R730xd still supported for vSAN?
Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix lists the R730xd on ESXi 7.0 through 7.0 U3, but Broadcom ended general support for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x on 2 October 2025. Dell's vSphere 8.0 KB names the R740XD and not the R730xd, so check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning an upgrade.
Can I still download BIOS and firmware for the R730xd?
Yes. According to Dell's KB, the Dell Support website offers every Dell server driver and firmware file as a free download, and released iDRAC firmware is available regardless of support contract. Dell's advisory DSA-2024-006 lists R730xd BIOS versions before 2.19.0 as affected, with 2.19.0 or later as the fix.
What came after the PowerEdge R730xd?
The PowerEdge R740xd is the next model in the same line. Dell's vSphere 8.0 certification KB names the R740XD, while the R730xd is absent from it.
Can I get third-party maintenance for an R730xd?
Once a Dell warranty ends, a third-party contract can take over the break-fix role, which in general means fault diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers. On an R730xd the quote should state the chassis layout, including mid-tray and rear bays, plus the PERC controller and power supplies. A quote can be requested per unit or for a whole estate.
