Is there an end-of-life date for the R740 and R640?
Not one we could find. We found no Dell model-level End of Life, End of Sale or End of Service Life notice for any standalone 14G PowerEdge server: the R440, R540, R640, R740, R740xd, R940, T440 or T640. Dell's public End-of-Life Product List (KB 000185734) covers converged infrastructure, storage and storage networking products. Its end-of-service-life spreadsheet includes 14G hardware only inside solution products such as PowerFlex Appliance R640 and R740XD, or Azure Stack Hub 14G R640 and R740XD. It has no row for a standalone PowerEdge server.
The one lifecycle statement we found for standalone 14G is a note at the top of the 14G page of Dell's Windows Server OS support matrix: "Almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued." It gives no dates. In that table the R440, R540, R740xd, T440 and T640 carry the *** marker that points to the note; the R640, R740 and R940 do not. Neither group has a date you can plan against.
What you can check is the individual unit. Dell's end-of-life KB, written for its converged and storage products, says the support capability of any tagged device can be checked on Dell Support by entering the service tag, and that the support services and their expiry dates appear in a banner next to a figure of the device. Do that for every 14G asset and record each expiry against its tag in your asset register. Confirming a PowerEdge server is 14G
Dell's servers-by-generation KB (000137343) decodes the model number. In a three-digit PowerEdge name the second digit is the generation and the third is the CPU maker, 0 for Intel and 5 for AMD, so an R740 is a 14th-generation, Intel-based rack server. The same KB lists the 14G rack models as R240, R340, R440, R540, R640, R6415, R740, R740xd, R740xd2, R7415, R7425, R840, R940 and R940xa, and the 14G towers as T40, T140, T340, T440 and T640.
This page concentrates on eight Intel models that Dell's code-version KB (000227230) and security advisory DSA-2026-355 both cover: R440, R540, R640, R740, R740xd, R940, T440 and T640. Firmware and security fixes are still shipping for 14G
Dell's "discontinued" note has not stopped code releases. The PowerEdge R740 Drivers & Downloads page lists BIOS 2.28.1 for the R740, R740xd, R640 and R940, released on 21 August 2026 and marked Urgent, and iDRAC 7.00.00.185, released on 28 August 2026 and also marked Urgent. Dell's Minimum, Recommended and Latest Code Versions KB (000227230, updated 10 September 2026) names BIOS 2.28.1 and iDRAC 7.00.00.185 as both the latest and the recommended code for all eight models.
Two Dell security advisories published in September 2026 set fix levels for these servers. DSA-2026-355 (High, 1 September 2026) covers Intel's 2026.3 IPU (CVE-2026-20712, CVE-2026-6726 and CVE-2026-6727) and gives BIOS 2.28.1 or later as the remediation for the R740, R740xd, R640, R940, R540, R440, T440 and T640. DSA-2026-392 (High, CVSS 7.2, 3 September 2026) fixes CVE-2026-23855, an OS command injection flaw in iDRAC9 and iDRAC10; on 14G the fix is iDRAC9 7.00.00.184 or later.
Dell's own minimums in KB 000227230 are BIOS 2.25.0 and iDRAC 7.00.00.173. Both are below the advisory fix levels, so a server running exactly Dell's minimum code is affected by both advisories. 14G now sits on its own iDRAC9 branch. The 7.00.00.183 release notes (October 2025) say the release only supports 14th generation servers, and the 7.20.30.00 notes list only 15G and 16G systems. Dell's iDRAC9 versions KB (000178115) shows 14G at 7.00.00.183 and 15G/16G at 7.20.80.50, but its 7.00.00.x entries stop at 7.00.00.183, so use the model's driver page and KB 000227230 as your reference for current 14G code.

The dates that have already passed: Intel processor servicing
The firm dates attached to 14G come from Intel, not Dell. Intel's servicing article (000022396) lists 1st Gen Xeon Scalable (Skylake server) processors, including the Silver 4114, Gold 6130 and Gold 6140, with End of Interactive Support and End of Servicing Updates both on 31 December 2023. It lists 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable (Cascade Lake) processors, including the Silver 4214, Gold 6230 and Gold 6248, with both milestones on 30 June 2025. For both families the End of Servicing Lifetime date reads "To be determined", and the Intel ARK pages for all six processors show the same ESU dates.
Intel defines the ESU date as the date it concludes Baseline Servicing to the broad market, and says that where the EOSL date is to be determined, extended servicing may be available via the OEM. The ESU dates did not end BIOS releases for 14G: DSA-2026-355, published on 1 September 2026, gives BIOS 2.28.1 as the fix for Intel's 2026.3 IPU advisories on all eight models. Dell lists that remediation by server model, so check each CVE against the processor actually installed.
Which processor generation you have matters, because VMware treats them differently. Dell's R750 technical guide lists the R740 with 2nd Gen Xeon Scalable processors, Dell's BIOS 2.22.2 notes update microcode for both 1st and 2nd Gen, and the Broadcom Compatibility Guide carries separate Skylake-SP and Cascade Lake entries for the R440, R540, R640, R740, R940, T440 and T640. Record the installed CPU model on each host before you plan.
Windows Server and VMware support on 14G
Windows first. Dell's Windows Server OS matrix marks Windows Server 2022 Standard and Datacenter as Qualified on all eight models, and its 14G page has no Windows Server 2025 column: it covers 2022, 2019, 2016 and 2012. The Supported Operating Systems pages for the R740 and R640 also stop at Windows Server 2022 LTSC. The exception is BIOS 2.22.2, released on 1 October 2024, whose notes list "Support for Microsoft Windows Server 2025 Operating System for R740 and R640". No Dell document we found confirms Windows Server 2025 on the other six models. On VMware, Dell's and Broadcom's documents differ. Dell's Supported Operating Systems pages for the R740 and R640 list ESXi up to 8.0. The Broadcom Compatibility Guide lists the R740, R640, R440, R540, R940, T440 and T640, in both Skylake-SP and Cascade Lake entries, as supported from ESXi 7.0 to ESXi 9.1, with ESXi 9.0 and 9.1 flagged "VCF Supported. Confirm w/Vendor" against KB 428874.
The processor sets the ceiling. Broadcom KB 428874 (updated July 2026) says Skylake-SP, previously discontinued in VCF 9.0, is now supported in Deprecated Mode for VCF 9.1.x and will not be extended beyond 9.1.x, and KB 318697 lists Skylake-SP as discontinued starting from 9.2. KB 318697 lists Cascade Lake as Deprecated in 9.x, which Broadcom says still means supported, and Discontinued in the next major release after the 9.x series; it gives no version number for that release. KB 428874 also states that hardware, BIOS and firmware support is the OEM's responsibility, and that customers with no support terms from Intel or an OEM bear the risks of running Skylake-SP servers. What actually changes when Dell cover on a 14G server ends
With no model date, the event that matters is the expiry shown against each service tag. Three things are not tied to that expiry. Firmware stays downloadable: Dell KB 000128194 notes that "All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website", and it sets no contract or entitlement condition; its only related note is that some features of one update method may require an iDRAC Enterprise licence. Dell's service description does not tie security updates to the contract: ProSupport for Infrastructure (v17, July 2026) says security support is unrelated to support entitlement, and that the service does not guarantee security updates will be available. And the OS support lists cited on this page are public documents you can check without a contract.
What ends is the Dell service delivered against that tag. How long fixes keep coming is a product lifecycle question, not a contract one. Dell's Vulnerability Response Policy recommends that customers move to supported versions of Dell products before end of support dates to keep receiving security updates, and lists Product Life Cycle among the factors that shape response timelines. So the risk is not that downloads stop when a contract lapses. It is that none of the documents cited here says how long Dell will keep issuing 14G fixes such as DSA-2026-355 and DSA-2026-392, whichever support you hold. Option 1: stay on Dell support while the service tag shows it
If a tag still shows active Dell services, keeping them is the lowest-effort path, and the remaining term is best used to sort the estate. Because 14G BIOS, iDRAC firmware and drivers are free to download either way, the contract's value is Dell's own service on that unit, not access to firmware. Split servers into those tied to a vendor-supported software stack, such as Skylake-SP VMware hosts with no supported path beyond VCF 9.1.x, and those that need only parts and an engineer when something fails. Option 2: move to 16G or 17G PowerEdge
We found no Dell statement naming a single replacement for the R740, but Dell's technical guides chain the generations: R640 to R650 to R660, R740 to R750 to R760, and T640 to T550 to T560, each guide comparing against the earlier model. The R450 and R550 guides compare against the R440 and R540, and the R960 guide compares the 16G R960 directly with the 14G R940xa. For the T440 and R940, the guides cited here make no such comparison, so treat any pairing as a sizing exercise rather than a like-for-like swap.

On consolidation, Dell's 8 April 2025 infrastructure press release gives one worked comparison. By Dell's analysis of SPECint and SPECfp scores, five R740xd servers with an Intel Xeon 8280 give a total score similar to one R770 with an Intel Xeon 6787P. That ratio belongs to those two configurations and should not be applied to other 14G builds. Option 3: keep 14G running on third-party maintenance
For 14G servers running a configuration that Dell or Broadcom still lists, such as Windows Server 2022 (Qualified in Dell's 14G matrix) or Cascade Lake hosts on VCF 9.x, independent hardware maintenance replaces the break-fix part of a Dell contract: fault diagnosis, replacement parts and on-site engineers. PowerEdge suits this because firmware access does not depend on the contract. Under Dell KB 000128194, BIOS, iDRAC firmware and drivers remain free to download, so leaving Dell cover does not freeze a server on its last BIOS. Firmware access off contract differs from vendor to vendor, so check each platform in a mixed estate before moving it.
Be clear about the boundary. A third-party maintenance contract does not supply Dell or any other OEM software. It cannot guarantee that Dell keeps issuing 14G fixes, and Dell's own service description says ProSupport does not guarantee security updates either. It is also not a support term from Intel or an OEM in the sense Broadcom KB 428874 uses for Skylake-SP hosts, so a Skylake-SP VMware host that needs Broadcom's full backing is a poor candidate to move. We found no Dell model-level End of Life, End of Sale or End of Service Life date for the standalone R740, R740xd or any other standalone 14G PowerEdge server. Dell's Windows Server OS matrix says only that almost all 14G platforms have reached End of Life and are discontinued, with no dates. Check the support expiry against each server's service tag on Dell Support.
Is the Dell PowerEdge R640 still supported?
Dell is still releasing code for it. BIOS 2.28.1 (21 August 2026) covers the R640, and Dell's code-version KB lists BIOS 2.28.1 and iDRAC 7.00.00.185 as the latest and recommended versions. Whether a particular R640 still has Dell support services is shown against its service tag.
Can I download R740 BIOS and iDRAC updates without a Dell warranty?
Yes. Dell KB 000128194 states that Dell server drivers and firmware can be downloaded free from Dell Support, and it sets no contract or entitlement condition. Its only related note is that some features of one update method may require an iDRAC Enterprise licence; that does not apply to the downloads themselves.
Does the Dell R740 support Windows Server 2025?
Dell's documents conflict. The notes for BIOS 2.22.2 (1 October 2024) list Windows Server 2025 support for the R740 and R640. However, Dell's Supported Operating Systems pages for both models stop at Windows Server 2022 LTSC, and the 14G page of its Windows Server matrix has no 2025 column. We found no Dell document confirming Windows Server 2025 on the other 14G models.
Will ESXi 9 run on a Dell R740 or R640?
The Broadcom Compatibility Guide lists both as supported up to ESXi 9.1, with 9.0 and 9.1 marked "VCF Supported. Confirm w/Vendor". Dell's own OS pages list ESXi up to 8.0. Servers with 1st Gen Xeon Scalable (Skylake-SP) CPUs are supported in Deprecated Mode for VCF 9.1.x and not beyond. Cascade Lake servers are deprecated but still supported in 9.x, and Broadcom lists them as discontinued in the next major release after 9.x.
How do I know if my PowerEdge server is 14G?
Look at the second digit of the three-digit model number. Dell's naming KB says that digit is the generation (0 for 10th generation, 1 for 11th and so on), so a 4 means 14G, and the third digit is the CPU maker (0 for Intel, 5 for AMD). The R440, R540, R640, R740, R740xd, R940, T440 and T640 are all 14G.
What replaced the Dell PowerEdge R740?
We found no Dell statement naming a single replacement. Dell's R750 technical guide compares the 15G R750 with the R740, and the R760 guide compares the 16G R760 with the R750.
