01 — Overview

The R760 at a glance

Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the R760 is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • The widest option envelope in Dell’s 16G 2U range — 51 processor SKUs, 31 documented drive-bay layouts and 10 power supplies.
  • Identical external dimensions to the R750, so rack, rail and cabling plans carry straight over from the previous generation.
  • PCIe Gen5 and EDSFF E3.S NVMe arrive without giving up the 12 × 3.5-inch and 24 × 2.5-inch SAS layouts many estates still need.
  • Intel Xeon Max with 64 GB of on-package HBM is available — unusual in a general-purpose 2U, and useful for memory-bound HPC.

Watch-outs

  • With 5th Gen Xeon, Dell lists 256 GB DIMMs as a future release — today that caps 5th Gen builds at 4 TB (32 × 128 GB).
  • Only up to four slots run at PCIe Gen5; the eight-slot riser layouts are Gen4.
  • Processors at 250 W and above use the MAX system board, and four SKUs (Xeon Max 9480 and 9470, Platinum 8470Q, Gold 6458Q) are liquid-cooled only.
  • The Universal backplane runs hardware RAID for SAS/SATA only — NVMe on it is direct-attach, so plan NVMe RAID on the dedicated NVMe RAID layouts.

Thirty-two DDR5 RDIMM slots — eight channels per processor, two DIMMs per channel. Filling one DIMM per channel (16 DIMMs) keeps the highest speed; the second DIMM per channel doubles capacity at a lower speed.

  • 8 TB requires 32 × 256 GB RDIMMs, which Dell currently supports with 4th Gen processors.
  • Quad-rank 128 GB RDIMMs have reached end of life; dual-rank 128 GB parts replace them.

The R760 has 32 DDR5 RDIMM slots. With 4th Gen Xeon Scalable processors it reaches 8 TB using 32 × 256 GB RDIMMs. Dell lists 256 GB DIMMs with 5th Gen Xeon as a future release, so a 5th Gen R760 tops out at 4 TB today using 32 × 128 GB.

What memory speed does the R760 run at?

With 4th Gen Xeon, DDR5 runs at 4800 MT/s with one DIMM per channel and 4400 MT/s with two. With 5th Gen, Dell’s R760 guide lists 6400/5600 MT/s-rated DIMMs at one DIMM per channel and 4400 MT/s with two; its R770 comparison gives the R760 as up to 5600 MT/s.
