01 — Overview

The R660xs at a glance

Our read of Dell’s documentation: where the R660xs is strong, and the limits worth knowing before you spec one.

Strengths

  • A short 1U: 712.95 mm from rack ears to PSU handles for the 10-bay, 4 × 3.5-inch and 8 × NVMe builds, 661.37 mm for the 8 × SAS/SATA or diskless chassis, and 748.79 mm with the bezel against 822.88 mm for the R660.
  • Four 3.5-inch bays in one rack unit (up to 96 TB in Dell’s table) — a front the R660 does not list — alongside 8- and 10-bay 2.5-inch fronts in SAS, SATA or NVMe.
  • Air cooling is the only cooling option on the spec sheet, so there are no liquid-cooling manifolds or CDUs to plan for.
  • The 600 W and 800 W supplies deliver their full rating on 100–120 V circuits, and the list of nine units also covers −48 V DC and 277 VAC / HVDC feeds.
  • Up to five I/O devices in 1U: three low-profile slots, the OCP 3.0 slot and a front PERC that takes no PCIe slot.

Watch-outs

  • Memory tops out at 1.5 TB across 16 slots at one DIMM per channel, and 96 GB modules are allowed only in counts of 1, 6 or 8 per processor.
  • Core counts top out at 32 on 4th Gen and 28 on 5th Gen; the hottest SKU in Dell’s table is 225 W, below the 250 W figure quoted for the platform.
  • No GPUs — Dell’s R470 comparison says so outright — and no EDSFF E3.S bays.
  • The OCP slot is wired x8 where the R650xs had x16, and Dell’s OCP feature table stops at 25 GbE (its slot-priority tables do also name 100 Gb OCP cards).
  • In the 4 × 3.5-inch chassis the two 225 W processors (6448Y, 6442Y) need Dell’s hardware restriction: only two front drives, PCIe slot 1 and the OCP slot as the sole rear I/O (no BOSS, no slots 2–3), and a 30°C inlet ceiling if the rear drive pair is fitted.

Twenty-one Xeon SKUs appear in Dell’s R660xs processor table. Thirteen belong to the 4th Gen Scalable line and reach 32 cores; the other eight are 5th Gen parts topping out at 28. TDP spans 125 W to 225 W, so the R660’s higher-power bins are not offered. Each SKU is plotted below by core count and power.

  • The UPI column reads N/A for the 5512U; every other SKU lists 16 or 20 GT/s.
  • Turbo is marked only as present or absent — the 3408U is the single no-turbo part — so no boost clocks appear.
  • Memory speed follows the processor: 5200 MT/s only on the 6526Y, 4800 MT/s on the 6534, 5512U, 5520+ and the 64xx 4th Gen parts, and 4000–4400 MT/s on the rest.
  • Heat sinks follow TDP: the standard sink up to 150 W, the high-performance (HPR) sink from 165 W upwards.

Each processor drives eight DDR5 RDIMM slots at one DIMM per channel, 16 in all — half the R660’s count. With a single processor only slots A1–A8 are live, which caps that build at eight modules.

  • The 1.5 TB maximum is 16 × 96 GB. Dell’s part list (Table 14) has the 96 GB module only as a 5600 MT/s part and the guide marks 5600 MT/s RDIMMs for 5th Gen Xeon, although its memory matrix (Table 15) groups 96 GB with both 4800 and 5600 MT/s ratings.
  • 5600 MT/s modules run at up to 5200 MT/s here, the platform ceiling; 4800 MT/s modules run at up to 4800 MT/s.
  • Capacities cannot be mixed, and modules of different speeds all fall back to the slowest one fitted.
  • Two-processor systems take 2, 4, 8, 12 or 16 DIMMs, populated alternately between the sockets.

10 drive-bay layouts, up to 12 bays

Three front families — 4 × 3.5-inch, 8 × 2.5-inch and 10 × 2.5-inch — plus a diskless chassis, with an optional two-bay 2.5-inch rear module that occupies the riser 2 position. The front also sets chassis depth, fan type and how hot a processor the chassis can cool.

  • BOSS-N1 on this chassis is internal and cold-swap: two 480 GB or 960 GB M.2 NVMe drives, mirrored (RAID 1) or striped (RAID 0). The 2U R760xs guide rates its BOSS-N1 as fully hot-plug.
  • Some drives allowed at the front are barred from the rear module, among them Kioxia PM6 SAS, Kioxia CM6 NVMe and Samsung PM1733/PM1735 above set capacities.
  • Rear drives are not supported under ASHRAE A3 or A4 conditions.

Each processor brings 80 PCIe 5.0 lanes, but the 1U chassis exposes at most three low-profile, half-length slots, across six riser configurations plus a riser-less build. The riser decides which slots run at Gen5.

  • With one processor, the spec sheet allows two slots: one x16 Gen4 and one x8 Gen5.
  • The rear drive module sits where riser 2 would, so a rear-drive build keeps only slot 1 (x16).
  • Dell lists NDR100 and NDR200 adapters only for slot 2 of the two R2e riser layouts, one card each, and no riser layout takes more than two 100 Gb PCIe NICs.
  • Expansion slots are not hot-swappable, and the H965e external PERC cannot be fitted in slot 1.

9 power supplies, 600–1,800 W

Two 60 mm hot-plug bays take a 1+1 pair from a list of nine: seven AC supplies between 600 W and 1800 W, an 1100 W DC unit (−48 to −60 V), and a 1400 W Titanium unit fed from 277 VAC or high-voltage DC (336 V in Dell’s PSU table and spec sheet, 366 V in the guide’s overview tables).

  • Low-line (100–120 V) circuits: the 600 W and 800 W models keep full output, the 1100 W and 1400 W mixed-mode models give 1050 W, and a 200–240 V feed is mandatory for the 700 W and 1800 W models.
  • Mixed-mode units from 600 W to 1400 W take a C13 lead. The 1800 W unit has a C15 inlet, which a C13 cord can reach through a C14-to-C15 jumper; the DC model plugs in through a Lotes connector and the 277 V model through an APP 2006G1 cord.
  • If two different wattages are present at POST only the larger supply is enabled, with a mismatch warning; a second unit added while running must match or it stays disabled.
  • Dell’s quietest acoustic test build — one 125 W processor, two DIMMs and a single 600 W supply — measured 32 dB at idle and 34 dB operating at the bystander position; the ten-bay test build with eight NVMe drives reached 56 dB at full load in 35°C air.
  • ASHRAE A3 and A4 operation requires both supplies.

Virtualisation

Ten-bay NVMe hypervisor node

Two 32-core 6448Y processors put 64 cores in a rack unit, and ten Gen4 NVMe drives hold a local datastore or vSAN capacity while the hypervisor boots from BOSS-N1. At 225 W the ten-bay NVMe front runs these processors on HPR Gold fans with a 35°C inlet limit, as long as no rear drives are fitted.

1.5 TB scale-out database node

Scale-out database is one of Dell’s named workloads for this server. The 16-core 6526Y is the only processor in its table that runs memory at 5200 MT/s, and 16 × 96 GB reaches the platform ceiling of 1.5 TB. Ten SAS SSDs hang off the front-mounted H965i, whose 8 GB flash-backed cache absorbs write bursts.

96 GB RDIMMs are supported only 1, 6 or 8 to a processor. The 10-bay SAS4 front needs HPR Gold fans and, at 195 W, a 35°C inlet ceiling. With rear drives Dell’s fan matrix cuts that to 30°C, though the chassis notes apply the 30°C cap only from 205 W.

A single 125 W 4509Y, four large 3.5-inch drives and a 600 W supply make a compact file and print server for a branch. Dell’s quietest acoustic test build also used one 125 W processor and a single 600 W supply, and measured 32 dB at idle.

One-processor systems use DIMM slots A1–A8 only and are limited to two PCIe slots. With one processor and no rear drives Dell specifies five fans. The 4 × 3.5-inch chassis is not supported under ASHRAE A4.

Two 28-core 5520+ processors, linked over UPI at 20 GT/s, give 56 cores in 1U. Of the three 28-core parts in Dell’s table, the 5512U lists no UPI speed and the 5420+ lists 16 GT/s. The 8 × 2.5-inch SAS/SATA chassis is one of the two short R660xs builds, and at 205 W it runs on standard fans with a 35°C inlet limit.

R660xs questions, answered from the documentation

What is the maximum memory of the Dell PowerEdge R660xs?

Sixteen RDIMM slots at one DIMM per channel give 1.5 TB with 16 × 96 GB modules. Dell’s part list shows the 96 GB module only in its 5600 MT/s version, which the guide assigns to 5th Gen Xeon; the largest 4800 MT/s module in that list is 64 GB, or 1 TB across 16 slots.

Which processors does the R660xs support?

Dell’s R660xs table lists 21 SKUs. The 4th Gen Scalable group has thirteen parts reaching 32 cores and the 5th Gen group has eight reaching 28. TDPs run from 125 W to 225 W, the 3408U alone lacks turbo, and the 5512U has no UPI speed listed.

How many drive bays does the R660xs have?

Up to 12: ten 2.5-inch bays at the front plus two 2.5-inch bays at the rear. The front can instead take four 3.5-inch drives (up to 96 TB in Dell’s table) or eight 2.5-inch drives, and a diskless chassis is available. There are no EDSFF E3.S options.

Can the R660xs take a GPU?

No. Dell’s R470 technical guide lists the R660xs as having no GPU support, and its slot priority tables contain no accelerators. For a GPU in a similar two-socket design, the 2U R760xs takes up to two NVIDIA A2 cards.

How many PCIe slots does the R660xs have?

With two processors: three low-profile Gen4 slots (x16 + x8 + x8) or two Gen5 slots (x16 + x8); with one processor, one x16 Gen4 and one x8 Gen5. Networking adds an x8 Gen4 OCP 3.0 slot rated to 25 GbE, and the front PERC needs no slot at all.

Which power supplies can the R660xs use?

Two hot-plug bays hold a 1+1 pair chosen from nine models: AC units of 600, 700, 800, 1100, 1400 (Titanium or Platinum) and 1800 W, and for special feeds an 1100 W (−48 V DC) or 1400 W (277 VAC/HVDC) version. The 700 W and 1800 W supplies need 200–240 V.

How big and heavy is the R660xs?

The chassis measures 42.8 mm by 482 mm (height by width). Depth to the PSU handles is 712.95 mm for the 10-bay, 4 × 3.5-inch and 8 × NVMe builds and 661.37 mm for the 8 × SAS/SATA or diskless chassis; the spec sheet gives 748.79 mm with the bezel. A fully populated 4 × 3.5-inch system weighs up to 19.45 kg.

How does the R660xs differ from the R660?

Both are 1U on the same Xeon generations, but the R660 has 32 DIMM slots and 8 TB, processors reaching 64 cores and 350 W, E3.S drive options, up to three 75 W GPUs and optional liquid cooling. The R660xs trades that headroom for a shorter air-cooled chassis, a 4 × 3.5-inch front and a processor list that stops at 225 W.

How does the R660xs compare with the PowerEdge R470?

Dell’s R470 technical guide compares the R470 directly with the R660xs. The R470 has one Xeon 6 socket (up to 144 E-cores or 86 P-cores), DDR5 rated to 6400 MT/s, as many as 16 E3.S bays, four x16 Gen5 slots and room for four 75 W accelerators; the R660xs keeps two sockets, 5200 MT/s memory and no GPU option.

Is the Dell PowerEdge R660xs end of life?
