Overview

The two PRIMERGY AMD servers

Fujitsu PRIMERGY AMD servers come in two forms: the RX1440 M2, a 1U single-socket server, and the RX2450 M2, a 2U dual-socket server, both for AMD EPYC 9004 or 9005 series processors[src][src].

For its PRIMERGY AMD servers, Fsas lists processors from 8 to 160 cores and frequencies up to 5 GHz, with 128 PCIe 5.0 lanes per platform[src][src]. Neither datasheet lists individual processor SKUs; they name the series, and Fsas's AMD flyer positions the pair for AI, analytics, VDI, HPC and virtualised workloads[src].

From the two datasheets. The RX1440 M2 trades the second socket for a single-socket design with all 24 DIMMs on one processor; the RX2450 M2 trades depth of memory per socket for a second processor and 2U of storage.

Same 6 TB, different topology

Both servers top out at 6 TB in 24 slots, but they get there differently[src][src]. The RX1440 M2 runs two DIMMs per channel on one processor; the RX2450 M2 runs one per channel on each of two.

RX2450 M2 rear options

The RX2450 M2's rear is chosen at order: four rear types trade PCIe slots against GPU slots or extra drives[src].

Rear types from the RX2450 M2 datasheet. Double-width GPU slots are supported only with front types 3, 4 and 5; the 3.5-inch front models do not support them.

The RX1440 M2 has three rear layouts: three half-height PCIe slots with two OCP slots as standard, two full-height slots, or two rear 2.5-inch bays with one full-height slot[src]. Its datasheet also lists a three-rear-bay layout as a “stretch goal”, so we do not count it as available.

FAQs

PRIMERGY AMD servers: common questions

Which PRIMERGY servers use AMD processors?

Two in the current range: the 1U single-socket PRIMERGY RX1440 M2 and the 2U dual-socket RX2450 M2. Both take AMD EPYC 9004 or 9005 series processors, and Fsas says the range runs from 8 to 160 cores per processor.

How much memory do the AMD PRIMERGY servers take?

Both have 24 DIMM slots and a 6 TB maximum. The RX1440 M2 puts all 24 on its one processor, two per channel, with memory at up to 5,200 MT/s; the RX2450 M2 has 12 per processor, one per channel, at up to 6,400 MT/s.

Is the RX1440 M2 a replacement for a two-socket server?

For many workloads it can be. It offers up to 160 cores and 6 TB on a single processor, and Fsas pitches it at AI, HCI and VDI workloads. Software licensed per socket can benefit; per-core licences do not change.

Can the RX2450 M2 take double-width GPUs?

Yes, with optional rear type 2: four PCIe slots plus two double-width GPU slots and one OCP slot. Fsas supports it only with front types 3, 4 and 5, not with the 3.5-inch fronts, so we confirm which 2.5-inch unit qualifies when we quote.

Can I mix memory modules in the AMD PRIMERGY servers?

Fsas’s RX1440 M2 datasheet says that on EPYC 9004 (Genoa) systems modules of different capacity or rank, or from different manufacturers, cannot be mixed. Plan memory as one module type from the start.

What warranty do the AMD PRIMERGY servers have?

Both datasheets list a 3-year onsite manufacturer warranty and a service lifecycle of at least 5 years after shipment.
