From First Node to Sub-60-Second VM Recovery
SimpliVity simplifies the entire data protection lifecycle — from deployment and inline deduplication to one-click backup and instant VM recovery.
Deploy SimpliVity Nodes
Rack and cable HPE SimpliVity nodes — compute, storage, networking, deduplication hardware, and backup are all contained in a single 1U or 2U appliance. No separate SAN, NAS, or backup server is required.
Each SimpliVity node ships with HPE OmniStack software pre-installed and validated on HPE ProLiant Gen11 hardware. A new cluster of 3 nodes can be operational in under an hour using the guided setup wizard in HPE InfoSight or VMware vCenter.
Connect to VMware vCenter
The SimpliVity vCenter plugin integrates directly into your existing VMware management interface. All SimpliVity operations — backup, clone, restore, capacity reporting — are available as right-click actions on VMs in vCenter.
No secondary management console is required for day-to-day operations. IT teams already familiar with vCenter can manage SimpliVity from day one with no new tooling to learn. HPE InfoSight provides deeper analytics and predictive intelligence as an optional additional view.
Inline Deduplication Begins Immediately
OmniStack performs global inline deduplication and compression on all data before it is written to disk. Duplicate data blocks across every VM, snapshot, and backup in the cluster are identified in real time and stored only once.
Unlike post-process deduplication, there is no staging area needed and no batch job to wait for — savings begin with the very first write. The deduplication process uses purpose-built acceleration to ensure no measurable impact on VM I/O performance.
Back Up Any VM in One Click
Right-click any VM in vCenter and select "Create Backup". The backup captures the complete VM state — OS, applications, data — in seconds. Backup policies can automate this on any schedule without any impact on running VMs.
SimpliVity backup is application-consistent for VSS-aware applications (SQL Server, Exchange) without requiring separate backup agents. The backup copy is stored in deduplicated format alongside the live VM data, using only the incremental unique storage for each backup point.
Replicate to Remote Cluster
Configure automated backup replication to a secondary SimpliVity cluster at a disaster recovery site. OmniStack transmits only the deduplicated delta — unique changed blocks — over the WAN, minimising bandwidth consumption for DR replication.
WAN replication is policy-driven. Set recovery point objectives (RPO) of minutes or hours depending on workload criticality. Replication does not require additional backup software licences — it is native to OmniStack and managed entirely from vCenter.
Recover VMs in Under 60 Seconds
When a VM needs to be recovered — from ransomware, accidental deletion, or hardware failure — right-click the backup in vCenter and select Restore. Any VM, regardless of size, is fully restored and running in under 60 seconds.
Recovery is instantaneous because SimpliVity's deduplicated storage format allows the VM to start directly from the backup metadata pointer without staging or rehydrating data first. The VM is live and serving users in under a minute while the underlying data is asynchronously verified in the background.
HPE OmniStack — Inline Global Deduplication
OmniStack is the software engine at the core of every SimpliVity node. It performs inline global deduplication and compression across all data in the cluster — VM primary storage, snapshots, and backup copies — before any data is written to disk.
Unlike post-process deduplication (which stores raw data first, then deduplicates in background batches), OmniStack processes data inline. Savings are immediate, there is no staging storage required, and there is no measurable performance impact — at any cluster load level.
SimpliVity 2600 — Full HCI at the Edge
Remote offices and branch locations get the full SimpliVity HCI platform — deduplication, integrated backup, VM recovery, and centralised management — in a 2-node cluster that requires no on-site IT staff.
The All-in-One HCI Platform from a Global Infrastructure Leader
90% Storage Savings
OmniStack inline global deduplication and compression delivers up to 90% capacity savings (10:1 ratio) across all VM data, snapshots, and backup copies — reducing storage CAPEX significantly versus traditional 3-tier infrastructure.
Backup Built-In — No Extra Cost
Integrated backup is included in every SimpliVity licence. No separate backup server, backup software licence, or backup storage array is required. Sub-60-second VM recovery for any VM, any size, from the existing vCenter interface.
Single-Vendor Simplicity
Compute, storage, networking, backup, and deduplication delivered by one HPE platform on one support contract. No multi-vendor finger-pointing when issues arise — HPE owns the entire stack.
Non-Disruptive Scaling
Add nodes to the cluster and SimpliVity automatically balances workloads and storage across the new hardware with zero downtime. Scale compute and storage simultaneously in a single node addition.
ROBO & Edge Ready
The 2-node ROBO cluster (SimpliVity 2600 + SVT Arbiter) enables full HCI capabilities at remote offices without a third physical node. Centralised management eliminates on-site IT staffing requirements at distributed locations.
VMware Native Integration
SimpliVity management is embedded directly into VMware vCenter. No new consoles, CLIs, or training required. All backup, clone, restore, and capacity operations are available as right-click actions on any VM.
Frequently Asked Questions — HPE SimpliVity
What is HPE SimpliVity?
HPE SimpliVity is a hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) platform that combines server compute, storage, and networking into a single 2U appliance powered by HPE ProLiant DL hardware. The OmniStack software layer provides inline global deduplication and compression across all data (VMs, backups, and snapshots), delivering up to 90% storage capacity savings. SimpliVity is certified for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V and includes built-in VM backup with sub-60-second recovery for any size VM.
What is the difference between HPE SimpliVity 380 Gen11 and SimpliVity 325 Gen11?
The HPE SimpliVity 380 Gen11 is a dual-socket node based on the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen11, supporting 4th/5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors, up to 8 TB DDR5 memory, and up to 61 TB raw capacity per node. The HPE SimpliVity 325 Gen11 is a dual-socket node based on the DL325, designed for AMD EPYC processor workloads. Both provide the same OmniStack HCI capabilities — the choice depends on whether Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC is preferred for your virtualisation workloads.
How does HPE SimpliVity backup work?
HPE SimpliVity includes built-in VM backup and recovery managed from the vCenter plugin or Hyper-V Manager. Backup policies are applied at the VM level — administrators define frequency, retention, and remote replication targets. Because all data is already deduplicated and compressed by OmniStack, backups require minimal additional storage. Recovery of any size VM is completed in under 60 seconds — dramatically faster than traditional backup restore processes.
How many nodes do I need to build an HPE SimpliVity cluster?
A minimum of two SimpliVity nodes are required to form a cluster. Most production deployments start with three nodes to achieve N+1 fault tolerance with full resource availability. HPE SimpliVity clusters scale from 2 to 32 nodes within a single vCenter datacenter object — enabling seamless capacity and performance expansion by adding nodes. A three-node starter cluster provides a balanced entry point for most departmental and SMB deployments.
