The Nutanix Cloud Platform Architecture
Nutanix replaces three separate infrastructure layers — storage array, SAN fabric, and hypervisor — with a single distributed software platform running on standard x86 hardware.
AOS — Distributed Storage Fabric
Nutanix AOS (Acropolis OS) is the distributed storage engine that makes HCI possible. It pools the local storage from all nodes in a cluster into a single virtualised storage fabric — providing inline compression, deduplication, erasure coding (EC-X), intelligent tiering between NVMe/SSD/HDD, and replication across nodes and sites. All data is written locally for performance and replicated to remote nodes for fault tolerance, with no external SAN required.
AHV — Built-In Enterprise Hypervisor
Nutanix AHV is a KVM-based enterprise hypervisor included in NCP at no additional cost. It provides full VM lifecycle management — creation, live migration, snapshots, clones, HA failover, and resource scheduling — plus native Kubernetes integration for containers. AHV eliminates the cost of VMware vSphere licensing for organisations adopting Nutanix, while supporting mixed-hypervisor clusters for ESXi and Hyper-V transitions.
Prism Central — Unified Management
Prism Central is the central management plane for the entire Nutanix environment. A single HTML5 console manages unlimited nodes across unlimited clusters, data centres, and cloud environments. Prism provides VM management, storage policy enforcement, capacity planning, performance analytics, RBAC, REST API access, and integration with ITSM tooling. Prism Element runs locally per cluster for resilient local management when WAN connectivity is unavailable.
Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM)
NCM (formerly Nutanix Calm + Beam + Security Central) automates the operations and lifecycle of the Nutanix platform. It provides intelligent cost metering and chargeback, multi-cloud cost governance, a self-service application marketplace, application blueprint automation (Calm), security posture monitoring and compliance scanning (Security Central), and runbook automation for IT service delivery. NCM turns the infrastructure into a programmable, self-service cloud.
Nutanix Unified Storage (NUS)
NUS extends AOS storage to serve structured and unstructured data — providing file services (Nutanix Files), object storage (Nutanix Objects), and block storage (Volume Groups with external access). NUS enables Nutanix to replace legacy NAS and object storage alongside VM workloads, with integrated ransomware detection via Nutanix Data Lens, providing file-level anomaly detection and recovery without separate security appliances.
Cloud & Kubernetes Integration
NCP extends seamlessly to public cloud via Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2) on AWS and Azure — running identical AOS/AHV software with the same Prism Central management plane as on-premises. NC2 enables true workload portability: migrate or burst VMs to cloud without re-platforming. Nutanix Kubernetes Engine (NKE) provides managed K8s clusters on AHV, and Cloud Native AOS (launched 2025) extends Nutanix storage to bare-metal and EKS environments.
