Common questions
M5, M5 Pro, or M5 Max — how to choose?
M5 (base) is for buyers who want the Pro display + ports but don't need workstation compute — most knowledge-worker prosumers. M5 Pro is the sweet spot for creative and dev pros — 12-14 CPU cores, 16-20 GPU cores, 48 GB memory ceiling. M5 Max is for serious workstation users — 16-core CPU, up to 40-core GPU, 128 GB memory ceiling, real 3D / 8K / ML capability.
Pro 14 or Pro 16 — which?
Pro 14 is for users prioritising portability — 1.55 kg vs Pro 16's ~2.1 kg. Pro 16 has a larger panel, larger battery, and slightly higher sustained performance. Pick by size / weight, not by silicon tier (Pro 14 ships base M5 + Pro + Max; Pro 16 ships Pro + Max only).
Why does the base M5 only have Thunderbolt 4?
Apple reserves Thunderbolt 5 (80 Gbps, 120 Gbps asymmetric) for the M5 Pro and M5 Max silicon. The base M5 ships TB4 (40 Gbps). For most users TB4 is plenty — TB5 matters mainly for external GPU enclosures, external NVMe arrays, and 8K monitor chains.
Can it drive multiple external 4K monitors?
Base M5: up to two external displays. M5 Pro: up to two external + internal. M5 Max: up to four external 6K displays + internal. The M5 Max is the choice if you genuinely run multi-monitor reference workflows.
Worth upgrading from M4 Pro 14?
For new purchases, M5 is the current generation. For existing M4 Pro 14 fleets, the upgrade case is moderate — the M5's per-core Neural Accelerators are a real on-device AI throughput improvement, but CPU / GPU gains are incremental. Refresh on your standard 3-year cycle rather than mid-cycle.
