Dell · PowerEdge 13th generation (13G)

Dell PowerEdge R530 end of life

For the PowerEdge R530, a 2U server with up to two Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors, Dell has published no model-wide end-of-life date; support for each R530 is tracked through its Service Tag. Dell's generation-level wording is undated, and the R530's iDRAC8 controller reached End of Software Maintenance in February 2024. The R530 does appear in Dell's vSphere 7.x compatibility matrix, though Broadcom ended general support for vSphere 7.0 on 2 October 2025.

Every row names its basis. A third-party tracker date is not the vendor’s own, and “not published” means exactly that.

Where the PowerEdge R530 stands today

Dell's December 2025 Windows Server matrix carries an R530 row, and a separate R530xd row, in its table headed '13G and older discontinued platforms', with no date against either. Dell's Secure Boot KB adds that 12th and 13th generation platforms 'will not receive updates due to end-of-service status', again undated and without naming the R530. On Dell's community forum in February 2025, a Dell staff member answering a question about the R550 said Dell stopped presenting PowerEdge EOL and EOSL dates as of about the 13th generation, though that reply is not a policy statement.

The dated lifecycle milestones Dell publishes belong to the R530's iDRAC8 management controller: End of Sale in December 2021, then End of Software Maintenance in February 2024, after which iDRAC Engineering is 'no longer obligated to maintain or repair the firmware'. Neither is a date for the server. To see an individual R530's warranty status and expiry, take the Service Tag from the pull-out information tag at the front of the system (the R530 Owner's Manual says it may also be on a chassis sticker) and enter it at Dell's contract-services page. Renewal is requested via Dell's extend-warranty form, although renewal itself is not available in every country, Dell says.

Finding the date for your own unit

Dell ties support to each unit's Service Tag, not to the model. The R530 Owner's Manual says the Service Tag and Express Service Code are found on the front of the system by pulling out the information tag, or may be on a sticker on the chassis (https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/poweredge-r530_owners-manual_en-us.pdf). Enter the Service Tag at https://www.dell.com/support/contractservices/ to see warranty status and expiry date. To ask about renewal, use https://www.dell.com/support/incidents-online/email/extend-warranty. Dell says 'Warranty Renewals are not available in all countries', and 'If you have purchased your products through a reseller partner, you may need to contact the reseller for renewal' (Dell KB 000132024: https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000132024).

What still works after Dell support ends

For an R530 running VMware, one Dell tool is already off the table: Dell's KB states that 'DSU for ESXi does not support 13th-generation or older server platforms', lists VMware ESXi 7.x and 8.x as the affected products and names the R530 and R530xd. Dell still describes its server drivers and firmware as free to download. On the BIOS, DSA-2024-006 lists R530 versions prior to 2.19.0 as affected by CVE-2024-0161 and 2.19.0 or later as the remediation.

Released iDRAC firmware remains available 'regardless of support contract', with 2.86.86.86 named as the last iDRAC8 build, and Dell carries no obligation to fix iDRAC8 after February 2024. Dell will not ship a Secure Boot certificate BIOS update for 13G, and its Secure Boot BIOS guidelines cover 14th to 16th generation servers only, with no R530 row. Per Dell, the Microsoft Secure Boot 2011 certificates were due to begin expiring in June 2026; installed operating systems continue to boot, it says, but it lists potential boot failures if Secure Boot is disabled or BIOS defaults are reset. OpenManage Server Administrator's final release, on 30 September 2024, excludes 13G, and Dell's suggested route is iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module.

  • Dell says PowerEdge drivers and firmware are free to download: 'All drivers and firmware for Dell servers are available to download for free on the Dell Support website.' (KB 'PowerEdge: Methods and Steps to Update Firmware and Drivers', modified 31 Aug 2026.) (dell.com)
  • iDRAC8: 'Released iDRAC firmware updates are available regardless of support contract.' Dell: 'The last release of iDRAC8 firmware is version 2.86.86.86.' Dell has no obligation to fix iDRAC8 firmware after February 2024. (dell.com)
  • Dell security advisories are public. DSA-2024-006 (CVE-2024-0161; revision 1.0 initial release 2024-03-12, latest revision 7.0 of 2025-06-30) lists PowerEdge R530 BIOS 'Versions prior to 2.19.0' as affected and 'Version 2.19.0 or later' as the remediation. (dell.com)
  • No Secure Boot certificate BIOS update is coming for 13G. Dell: '12th and 13th Generation Server platforms will not receive updates due to end-of-service status.' Dell's 'Server BIOS Update Guidelines for Microsoft Secure Boot Certificates' (KB 000402373, https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/en-us/000402373) covers 14th to 16th generation servers only and has no R530 row. (dell.com)
  • Dell System Update (DSU) for ESXi does not work on this server. Dell: 'DSU for ESXi does not support 13th-generation or older server platforms.' The KB's affected products are VMware ESXi 7.x and 8.x, and its product list includes the R530 and R530xd. (dell.com)

What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the PowerEdge R530

An R530 contract has up to two Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 CPUs and 12 DDR4 RDIMM sockets to account for (1866, 2133 or 2400 MT/s; up to 256 GB with one processor, 384 GB with two). Power comes in two builds: up to two redundant 495 W, 750 W or 1100 W AC Platinum supplies (plus a 750 W DC option for China only), or a single 450 W Bronze non-redundant cabled supply. A cabled-PSU unit has no redundancy for a service level to rely on.

The R530 takes up to eight 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch internal hot-swap SAS, SATA or nearline SAS hard drives, or up to eight SATA SSDs. Internal RAID options are the PERC S130 (software), H330, H730 and H730P; external storage connects through a PERC H830 or a non-RAID 12Gbps SAS HBA, and where an enclosure hangs off either, the contract should say whether it is in scope. Expansion is up to five PCIe slots (three PCIe 3.0, two PCIe 2.0), networking is four 1GbE LOM ports, and management is iDRAC8 Express or Enterprise with optional vFlash. Dell third-party maintenance generally covers parts of this kind with diagnosis, replacement components and engineer visits.

Extend or refresh the PowerEdge R530?

One point in the R530's favour is VMware: Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix lists it, with the R430, for Xeon E5-26xx v3 and v4 on ESXi 7.0, 7.0 U1, U2 and U3. Windows is weaker. The R530 row in Dell's matrix has ticks under Windows Server 2019 and 2016 Standard and Datacenter, yet carries no 'Support Level' entry for either, and the matrix treats a blank as no support; its 'Qualified' entries stop at Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2012. A redundant-PSU R530 on BIOS 2.19.0 or later is a reasonable candidate for third-party maintenance; check its Service Tag first.

Those limits are now tight. Broadcom ended general support for vSphere 7.0 on 2 October 2025. Dell's KB of servers certified for vSphere 8.0 names 14th-generation and later models such as the R540, not the R530, and refers readers to the VMware HCL for the complete list, so check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning an ESXi 8 upgrade. The 13G Windows table stops at Windows Server 2019, whose extended end date Microsoft lists as 10 January 2029. Intel ARK shows example parts, the E5-2620 v3 and v4, with End of Servicing Updates dates of 31 December 2021 and 30 June 2022; check ARK for the exact SKU fitted. For virtualisation hosts with years left to run, the PowerEdge R540, the next model in the same line, or one of the options among refurbished Dell PowerEdge servers is the more defensible choice.

  • Power redundancy depends on the build. Dell's Owner's Manual lists both a 'Redundant power supply configuration' and a 'Non-redundant power supply configuration' (one 450 W cabled PSU). A cabled-PSU unit has no PSU redundancy for a maintenance SLA to rely on. (dl.dell.com)
  • Windows Server: Dell's LTSC matrix (Dec 2025) lists the R530 under '13G and older discontinued platforms'. It ticks the Windows Server 2019 and 2016 Standard and Datacenter edition columns and the Windows Server 2012 R2/2012 Standard and Datacenter columns. Only the Windows Server 2012 R2 and 2012 'Support Level' cells read 'Qualified'; the 2019 and 2016 'Support Level' cells are blank, and the matrix notes say 'Blank cells indicate no support.' The 13G table has no Windows Server 2022 or 2025 columns, and the matrix says Windows Server 2022 and later require TPM 2.0, UEFI and Secure Boot. (dl.dell.com)
  • Microsoft lists Windows Server 2019's Extended End Date as '1/10/2029 6:59:59 AM' (US month/day order, i.e. 10 January 2029 as displayed). Windows Server 2019 is the newest Windows Server in Dell's 13G matrix table and on Dell's R530 supported-OS page. (learn.microsoft.com)
  • VMware: Dell's vSphere 7.x compatibility matrix (Rev. A14, June 2024) lists the R530 (with the R430), with Intel Xeon E5-26xx v3 and v4, as supported on ESXi 7.0, 7.0 U1, U2 and U3, booting from hard drive or SD card but not BOSS. Dell's R530 supported-OS page (https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/supportedos/poweredge-r530) also lists VMware ESXi 7.0. (dl.dell.com)
  • Broadcom: 'The End of general support for vSphere 7.0 was October 2nd, 2025.' The article's table gives that date for ESXi 7.x, vCenter 7.x and vSAN 7.x. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
  • Dell's KB 'PowerEdge: Servers certified for VMware vSphere 8.0' says 'See VMware HCL for a complete list of VMware certified dell servers.' Its product list names 14G and later models (e.g. R540), not the R530. Check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before planning an ESXi 8 upgrade. (dell.com)
  • Secure Boot: Dell says 'Microsoft Secure Boot 2011 certificates begin expiring in June 2026' and '12th and 13th Generation Server platforms will not receive updates due to end-of-service status'. Dell: 'Expired certificates do not impact an already installed OS—those systems continue to boot'. Among the effects of expired certificates Dell lists 'Inability to receive Secure Boot-related updates' and 'Potential boot failures if Secure Boot is disabled or BIOS defaults are reset'. (dell.com)
  • OMSA had its final release on 30 September 2024, and Dell says 'the last OMSA release only supports 14th, 15th, and 16th-Generation servers', so 13G is excluded. Dell points to iDRAC with the iDRAC Service Module (iSM) instead. (dell.com)
  • CPU microcode servicing (v3): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v3, an example E5-2600 v3 SKU, with servicing status 'End of Servicing Updates' and an End of Servicing Updates date of 31 December 2021. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
  • CPU microcode servicing (v4): Intel ARK lists the Xeon E5-2620 v4, an example E5-2600 v4 SKU, with servicing status 'End of Servicing Updates' and an End of Servicing Updates date of 30 June 2022. Check the ARK page for the exact SKU installed. (intel.com)
  • Warranty length: a Dell support-community staff reply (2 Oct 2025) says 'it is pretty standard that a server can be warrantied up to 5 years from the ship date' and 'That can be extended on some basis, but that is based on part availability.' This is a forum answer, not a policy document. (dell.com)

Dell maintenance in detail →

Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix groups the R530 with the R430 in its 13G table, which makes the PowerEdge R430 end-of-life page the closest comparison for VMware planning. Looking back a generation, the 12th-generation PowerEdge R520 is the likely predecessor by Dell's naming, although no Dell document checked for this page says so. Other 13G rack servers, including the PowerEdge R730, sit under the same undated end-of-service wording.

Each bar runs from release to the milestone that marks end of support for the model as a whole. Amber bars end on a third-party tracker's date, not the vendor's. A dashed open end means no end date is published — not that support is indefinite. Component and accessory dates (a management controller, a power module) are not treated as the model's.

Questions people ask about the PowerEdge R530

Is the Dell PowerEdge R530 end of life?

Dell has published no model-wide date for the R530, either for end of life or for end of service life. What Dell does say is undated: the R530 and R530xd sit in its Windows Server matrix's '13G and older discontinued platforms' table, and its Secure Boot KB puts 13G in 'end-of-service status'. An individual R530's support is tied to its Service Tag.

Is the R530 supported on VMware ESXi 7 or 8?

Dell's vSphere 7.x matrix lists the R530 on ESXi 7.0 through 7.0 U3, with Xeon E5-26xx v3 or v4 and booting from hard drive or SD card but not BOSS; Broadcom ended general support for vSphere 7.0 on 2 October 2025. Dell's vSphere 8.0 certification KB names 14th-generation and later servers, not the R530, and refers readers to the VMware HCL. Check the Broadcom Compatibility Guide before any ESXi 8 plan.

Can I still download firmware for the R530?

Released firmware, yes: Dell says all drivers and firmware for its servers are free to download, and iDRAC firmware already released stays available regardless of support contract, up to 2.86.86.86, the last iDRAC8 build. Two things are missing: Dell System Update for ESXi does not support 13G servers, and Dell will not release a Secure Boot certificate BIOS update for them. For CVE-2024-0161, DSA-2024-006 gives R530 BIOS 2.19.0 or later as the remediation.

What came after the PowerEdge R530?

The PowerEdge R540 is the next model in the same line, and Dell's vSphere 8.0 certification list includes the R540 where the R530 is absent. Your existing R530's support position still comes from its Service Tag.

Can I get third-party maintenance for a Dell R530?

Two-socket servers like the R530 are the kind of hardware third-party maintenance generally covers, with diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits that can continue past a unit's Dell warranty. A quote should list both CPUs, the RDIMM population, the PSU build and any storage attached through a PERC H830 or SAS HBA. See hardware break-fix support for how that cover works, or request a quote through the maintenance coverage builder.
