| End of Support (tracker: eosl.date) | 22 July 2025 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker, not an HPE date. eosl.date gives the same 2025-07-22 date and a 'Sep. 01, 2014' release date to all four Gen9 entry rack models. It disagrees with Park Place (2023-01-31), so treat it as low confidence. | eosl.date: HPE End of Life (EOL) Dates and End of Service Life (EOSL) Dates |
Where the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 stands today
HPE published two sets of QuickSpecs for the DL180 Gen9, worldwide (c04346227) and North American (c04375610), both last revised as V27 on 25 September 2017 and both now under the RETIRED banner. They call the base products obsolete and no longer available for sale, undated, and HPE's update policy gives Gen9 SPP support no end date of its own.
eosl.date, the source of the 22 July 2025 figure, gives that same date to every Gen9 entry rack model covered here, and it contradicts Park Place, so treat it as low confidence. Park Place's own entry is narrower: end of life on 31 January 2018 and end of service life on 31 January 2023 for the 'Proliant Dl180G9 SFF Cto Chassis' only, with no entry for the LFF chassis variants and a note that a library entry does not guarantee Park Place can support the hardware. The per-unit answer sits in HPE Support Center Warranty Check, which asked for an HPE sign-in before any serial lookup in October 2026. For other hardware in your estate, try the server end-of-life checker.
HPE publishes no model-wide end-of-support date for the DL180 Gen9. Warranty and contract coverage end per unit. HPE's own 'Warranty check' links go to HPE Support Center Warranty Check (https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/warrantycheck). When we tried it in October 2026, it redirected to the HPE Sign In page, so you need an HPE account before you can look up the unit's serial number. Gen9 SPP and System ROM downloads also need an active warranty or support agreement linked to that account (HPE notice a00094704). For cover beyond warranty, HPE's store still lists 1-year Post Warranty Tech Care Basic for the DL180 Gen9 (SKU H39R0PE) by quote.
What still works after HPE support ends
HPE's Sweden store listed a Basic-tier post-warranty service for the DL180 Gen9 in October 2026: HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Basic DL180 Gen9 Service (SKU H39R0PE), with no discontinued marker and 'Request a quote' as the buying route. It covers one year of on-site hardware service with a 2-hour phone response from a product specialist during the coverage window, remote response nine hours a day within local HPE standard business hours (excluding weekends and HPE holidays), and next-business-day on-site coverage. A listing is not proof HPE will accept a given unit.
An active HPE warranty or support agreement is also what opens the Gen9.1 post-production SPP, which holds System ROM U20 version 2.92 (23 November 2021) and iLO 4 2.81; downloads need an HPE Passport login, and for System ROM the agreement must be associated with that account. Notice a00094704 is explicit that Gen9 still needs an active warranty or support agreement for SPP and System ROM downloads, and the Gen9.1 notes reissued in August 2026 agree, whereas the April 2022 Gen9.0 notes contradicted themselves on the point. HPE limits Gen9 firmware, driver and system-software changes to bug fixes and security updates. Safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers can be downloaded without entitlement validation under HPE's purchase terms and software licence. Check the iLO level: bulletin HPESBHF04456 lists the DL180 Gen9 as affected by CVE-2023-28083 before iLO 4 v2.82, above the SPP's 2.81.
- HPE notice a00094704 (version 2, 13 Jan 2025): 'Gen9 and previous server generations continue to require an active warranty or support agreement for downloading the SPP/System ROM firmware.' For Gen9 System ROM downloads, the warranty or agreement must be associated with the HPE Passport account. The removal of entitlement checks applies only to Gen10 and later. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's Gen9.1 Post-Production SPP release notes (dated August 2026; document history 'Final Version') say entitlement verification is still required for the Gen9-only SPP. Both download routes 'require HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement'. Their download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP is downloaded 'with the need for an active warranty or support agreement', so the contradiction in the April 2022 Gen9.0 notes does not recur. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's SPP validation note (undated) says ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers are available from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, subject to the purchase terms and the HPE Software License Agreement. For SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD downloads on out-of-warranty products, HPE directs customers to HPE sales, an HPE authorized partner or reseller, or HPE by phone or chat. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE classifies Gen9 as a 'Post-Production' generation. Firmware, driver and system-software changes are limited to bug fixes and security updates, with no new OS support, device support or functionality. Updates are released only to resolve an issue. Its table marks Gen9 'Entitlement required: Yes'. (downloads.hpe.com)
- HPE security bulletin HPESBHF04456 (rev.1, 13 Mar 2023; CVE-2023-28083, stored cross-site scripting in iLO) lists the 'HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9 Server' as affected 'Prior to iLO 4 v2.82'. It names iLO 4 v2.82 and later as the fix for ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers. The Gen9.1 SPP contents (a00127066) carry iLO 4 2.81, which is below that fixed version. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's earlier Gen9.0 post-production SPP release notes (April 2022) contradict themselves. The download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP 'can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement'. The Important Notes, and the next sentence of the same section, say entitlement and an active warranty or support agreement are required. (downloads.hpe.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Basic DL180 Gen9 Service (SKU H39R0PE) — Listed on HPE's Sweden store when read in October 2026, with no discontinued marker. Service method Hardware Onsite, 1-year term, post-warranty coverage. Basic tier: 2-hour phone response from a product specialist during the coverage window, remote response nine hours a day in local HPE standard business hours (excluding weekends and HPE holidays), and next-business-day on-site coverage. No price is shown, and the visible buying route is 'Request a quote'. A store listing does not by itself show that HPE will accept a particular unit. (buy.hpe.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9
A DL180 contract has to name the chassis precisely. HPE's configure-to-order options were 8 SFF hot-plug, with an optional 8 SFF addition for 16 SFF; 8 LFF hot-plug, with an optional 4 LFF field upgrade; 12 LFF hot-plug; and a non-hot-plug LFF chassis (754525-B21) that supports 4 LFF and 8 LFF configurations. Only 8 SFF models take an optical drive; the LFF chassis does not support one. The controller follows the build: the Dynamic Smart Array B140i handles up to eight SATA drives (RAID 0/1/5), the H240 FIO Smart HBA is the HBA option, and storage and performance models use the Flexible Smart Array P840/4G FIO for up to 16 SAS or SATA drives at 12Gb/s.
Behind the drives sit up to two Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors (36 cores) on the C610 chipset and 16 DDR4 DIMM slots, with slots 9 to 16 needing the second processor and a 1TB ceiling using 64GB LRDIMMs. Power is a 550W FIO non-redundant supply or 900W power input modules with power backplane for redundancy, and iLO 4 (2GB NAND) provides management. Independent cover generally brings diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers once vendor support ends (see what third-party maintenance covers), and a DL180 quote can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9?
Extending makes most sense for a DL180 whose workload is stable and whose operating system HPE's Gen9.1 SPP still covers: Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 or 2019, RHEL 7.9 or 8.8 to 8.10, or SLES 12 SP5 or 15 SP4 to SP6. Microsoft lists 10 January 2029 as the extended end date for Server 2019, the newest of those Windows releases. If the server runs Linux with Secure Boot on, confirm the HPE-DB-2016 key is in NVRAM, since HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020 need it.
Refresh becomes the better answer when the host needs Windows Server 2022 or 2025 or vSphere 8, none of which appear on HPE's Gen9.1 list, or when it runs Windows Server 2016, whose Microsoft extended end date is 13 January 2027. vSphere 7.0, the newest release HPE lists for Gen9 and then only for offline updates, left Broadcom's general support on 2 October 2025. In the same line, the next model is the ProLiant DL180 Gen10, and the refurbished ProLiant configurator lets you build up a specification for a newer server.
- HPE's Gen9.1 post-production SPP (release notes dated August 2026) supports system software and firmware only on Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 and 2019; RHEL 7.9 and 8.8 to 8.10; SLES 12 SP5 and 15 SP4 to SP6; and VMware vSphere 6.5 U3, 6.7 U3 and 7.0 U2/U3 (offline updates only). Windows Server 2022/2025 and vSphere 8 are not on the list. (support.hpe.com)
- The Gen9.1 SPP contents list System ROM U20 version 2.92 (11-23-2021), shared by the DL160 Gen9 and DL180 Gen9, and iLO 4 firmware 2.81. (support.hpe.com)
- Broadcom KB 415405: 'The End of general support for vSphere 7.0 was October 2nd, 2025.' vSphere 7.0 is the newest vSphere release in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP support list. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2019 Extended End Date as 1/10/2029 (Pacific Time). Windows Server 2019 is the newest Windows Server in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP OS list. (learn.microsoft.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2016 Extended End Date as 1/13/2027 6:59:59 AM (Pacific Time). (learn.microsoft.com)
- Gen9 servers running Linux with Secure Boot enabled must have the HPE-DB-2016 secure-boot key installed in NVRAM to load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. (support.hpe.com)
- Original server warranty per QuickSpecs: 3-Year Parts, 1-Year Labor, 1-Year Onsite support with next-business-day response. (support.hpe.com)

Related models
Among HPE's Gen9 entry rack servers, the DL180 Gen9 has one documented link to the DL160 Gen9: both use System ROM U20, at version 2.92 in the Gen9.1 SPP. eosl.date, by contrast, files the DL180 with all of the Gen9 entry rack models covered here under one end-of-support date (22 July 2025) and one release date (1 September 2014). HPE's warranty-or-agreement requirement for SPP and System ROM downloads is set for Gen9 and earlier generations as a whole; for other Gen9 models under it, see ProLiant DL380 Gen9 end of life and ProLiant ML350 Gen9 end of life.

Questions people ask about the HPE ProLiant DL180 Gen9
Is the DL180 Gen9 end of life?
HPE has retired both the worldwide and North American DL180 Gen9 QuickSpecs, which call the base products obsolete and no longer available for sale, but it has dated neither that nor a model-wide end of support. Two trackers supply dates: eosl.date gives end of support on 22 July 2025 (low confidence), and Park Place gives end of service life on 31 January 2023 for the SFF CTO chassis, with no entry for the LFF chassis variants.
Can I still buy HPE support for a DL180 Gen9?
HPE's Sweden store listed a 1-year Post Warranty Tech Care Basic service for the DL180 Gen9 (SKU H39R0PE) in October 2026, by quote. It provides a 2-hour phone response from a product specialist, remote response in local HPE standard business hours and next-business-day on-site cover. A listing does not guarantee HPE will accept your particular unit.
Is the DL180 Gen9 affected by the iLO 4 CVE-2023-28083 bulletin?
Yes. HPE security bulletin HPESBHF04456 lists the DL180 Gen9 as affected on iLO 4 versions prior to v2.82 and names v2.82 or later as the fix for Gen8 and Gen9 servers. The iLO 4 build in the Gen9.1 post-production SPP is 2.81, so check which version your unit actually runs.
Can I download the DL180 Gen9 System ROM without a warranty?
Not as a plain download. Under HPE notice a00094704, Gen9 servers still need an active warranty or support agreement before the SPP or System ROM can be downloaded, and a System ROM download also needs that agreement linked to your HPE Passport account. If the unit is out of warranty, HPE points you to its sales team, an authorised partner or reseller, or its phone and chat support.
What came after the DL180 Gen9?
The ProLiant DL180 Gen10 is the next model in the same line. Planning a move matters most for hosts on vSphere 7.0, whose general support Broadcom ended on 2 October 2025, because vSphere 7.0 U2/U3 is the newest vSphere on HPE's Gen9.1 SPP list for the DL180 Gen9.
