Where the HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9 stands today
HPE's QuickSpecs describe the DL160 Gen9 as 'the next generation 2P 1U value server replacing DL360e Gen8', and their revision history opens with a Version 1 to 2 change dated 19 September 2014. The latest revision, V28 (worldwide, 25 September 2017), is retired and gives no end-of-sale date, and HPE publishes no model-wide end-of-support date. Its policy says post-production SPPs are supported 'as long as HPE supports that server generation', with no date attached.
Read the tracker figures with their scope attached. Park Place covers only the 'Proliant Dl160G9 SFF Cto Chassis', with end of life on 31 January 2018 and end of service life on 31 January 2023; the LFF version has no entry, and Park Place cautions that appearing in its library does not mean it can support the device. eosl.date's end-of-support date of 22 July 2025 conflicts with Park Place's, so it is low confidence, and eosl.date applies that same date to all four Gen9 entry rack models covered here. For your own date, look the serial up in HPE Support Center Warranty Check, which would not open without an HPE sign-in when we checked in October 2026.
HPE publishes no model-wide end-of-support date for the DL160 Gen9. Warranty and contract coverage end per unit. HPE's own 'Warranty check' links go to HPE Support Center Warranty Check (https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/warrantycheck). When we tried it in October 2026, it redirected to the HPE Sign In page, so you need an HPE account before you can look up the unit's serial number. Gen9 SPP and System ROM downloads also need an active warranty or support agreement linked to that account (HPE notice a00094704). For cover beyond warranty, HPE's store still lists 1-year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential for the DL160 Gen9 (SKU H40K2PE).
What still works after HPE support ends
HPE's US store still showed HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential DL160 Gen9 Service (SKU H40K2PE) in October 2026, with no discontinued marker. It provides a year of post-warranty on-site hardware cover, 24x7, with 4-hour on-site response for covered hardware, and the page offered it through a reseller offer that could be added to the cart or through 'Request a quote'. A store listing does not by itself mean HPE will accept a specific DL160. An alternative to HPE Tech Care sets out the independent route.
Firmware carries on in post-production form. The Gen9.1 SPP, with release notes reissued in August 2026, includes System ROM U20 version 2.92 (23 November 2021) for the DL160 Gen9 and iLO 4 2.81, and HPE limits Gen9 changes to bug fixes and security updates with no new OS or device support. Getting the SPP or System ROM still needs HPE Passport and an active warranty or support agreement; notice a00094704 of 13 January 2025 keeps the entitlement-free change for Gen10 and later. HPE's validation note puts safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers outside entitlement validation, subject to its terms. Bulletin HPESBHF04456 counts the DL160 Gen9 as affected by CVE-2023-28083 on iLO 4 releases earlier than v2.82, and the SPP's 2.81 falls short of that fix.
- HPE notice a00094704 (version 2, 13 Jan 2025): 'Gen9 and previous server generations continue to require an active warranty or support agreement for downloading the SPP/System ROM firmware.' For Gen9 System ROM downloads, the warranty or agreement must be associated with the HPE Passport account. The removal of entitlement checks applies only to Gen10 and later. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's Gen9.1 Post-Production SPP release notes (dated August 2026; document history 'Final Version') say entitlement verification is still required for the Gen9-only SPP. Both download routes 'require HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement'. Their download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP is downloaded 'with the need for an active warranty or support agreement', so the contradiction in the April 2022 Gen9.0 notes does not recur. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's SPP validation note (undated) says ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers are available from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, subject to the purchase terms and the HPE Software License Agreement. For SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD downloads on out-of-warranty products, HPE directs customers to HPE sales, an HPE authorized partner or reseller, or HPE by phone or chat. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE classifies Gen9 as a 'Post-Production' generation. Firmware, driver and system-software changes are limited to bug fixes and security updates, with no new OS support, device support or functionality. Updates are released only to resolve an issue. Its table marks Gen9 'Entitlement required: Yes'. (downloads.hpe.com)
- HPE security bulletin HPESBHF04456 (rev.1, 13 Mar 2023; CVE-2023-28083, stored cross-site scripting in iLO) lists the 'HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9 Server' as affected 'Prior to iLO 4 v2.82'. It names iLO 4 v2.82 and later as the fix for ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers. The Gen9.1 SPP contents (a00127066) carry iLO 4 2.81, which is below that fixed version. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's earlier Gen9.0 post-production SPP release notes (April 2022) contradict themselves. The download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP 'can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement'. The Important Notes, and the next sentence of the same section, say entitlement and an active warranty or support agreement are required. (downloads.hpe.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential DL160 Gen9 Service (SKU H40K2PE) — Listed on HPE's US store when read in October 2026, with no discontinued marker. It can be added to the cart through a reseller offer shown on the page, or quoted with 'Request a quote'. Service method Hardware Onsite, 1-year term, post-warranty coverage, 24x7 coverage with 4-hour on-site response for covered hardware. A store listing does not by itself show that HPE will accept a particular unit. (buy.hpe.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9
Two sockets shape what a DL160 contract must allow for. The server takes up to two Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors (36 cores in all) on the C610 chipset, with 16 DDR4 DIMM slots, eight per processor; slots 9 to 16 work only with the second processor fitted. Memory tops out at 1TB with 64GB LRDIMMs or 512GB with 32GB RDIMMs, so the schedule should list the DIMM type and size in each unit. Storage is eight SFF or four LFF bays, both with an optical bay, run by the Dynamic Smart Array B140i (up to eight SATA drives at 6Gb/s, RAID 0/1/5), the H240 FIO Smart HBA, or the Smart Array P440/4G on performance models.
Power comes from a 550W FIO non-redundant supply (80 Plus Silver) unless the unit was built with 900W power input modules and a power backplane (80 Plus Gold) for redundancy, and the two arrangements call for different spares. iLO 4 (firmware 2.0 or later, with 2GB NAND) is the management controller and belongs in scope. Hardware break-fix support from an independent maintainer generally covers diagnosis, replacement parts and on-site engineers for servers past vendor support, and a quote for a DL160 Gen9 can be requested.

Extend or refresh the HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9?
Where a DL160 runs Windows Server 2019, RHEL 8.8 to 8.10 or SLES 15 SP4 to SP6, all on HPE's Gen9.1 list, and its workload is stable, keeping it on maintenance is a reasonable choice. Microsoft gives Windows Server 2019, the newest Windows release HPE still lists for Gen9, an extended end date of 10 January 2029. Keeping an HPE warranty or support agreement active, and associated with the HPE Passport account, also keeps System ROM downloads open.
Virtualised DL160s are already past one deadline. vSphere 7.0 U2/U3 is the newest vSphere on HPE's Gen9.1 list, for offline updates only, and Broadcom says general support for vSphere 7.0 ended on 2 October 2025; vSphere 8 is not listed. Windows Server 2016 hosts reach Microsoft's extended end date on 13 January 2027, and Windows Server 2022 and 2025 are absent from the list too. Where these apply, refresh is the cleaner path: the DL160 Gen10 is the next model in the same line, and refurbished HPE ProLiant servers widen the choice.
- HPE's Gen9.1 post-production SPP (release notes dated August 2026) supports system software and firmware only on Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 and 2019; RHEL 7.9 and 8.8 to 8.10; SLES 12 SP5 and 15 SP4 to SP6; and VMware vSphere 6.5 U3, 6.7 U3 and 7.0 U2/U3 (offline updates only). Windows Server 2022/2025 and vSphere 8 are not on the list. (support.hpe.com)
- The Gen9.1 SPP contents list System ROM U20 version 2.92 (11-23-2021), shared by the DL160 Gen9 and DL180 Gen9, and iLO 4 firmware 2.81. (support.hpe.com)
- Broadcom KB 415405: 'The End of general support for vSphere 7.0 was October 2nd, 2025.' vSphere 7.0 is the newest vSphere release in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP support list. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2019 Extended End Date as 1/10/2029 (Pacific Time). Windows Server 2019 is the newest Windows Server in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP OS list. (learn.microsoft.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2016 Extended End Date as 1/13/2027 6:59:59 AM (Pacific Time). (learn.microsoft.com)
- Gen9 servers running Linux with Secure Boot enabled must have the HPE-DB-2016 secure-boot key installed in NVRAM to load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. (support.hpe.com)
- Original server warranty per QuickSpecs: 3-Year Parts, 1-Year Labor, 1-Year Onsite support with next-business-day response. (support.hpe.com)

Related models
In HPE's own documents, the DL160 Gen9's closest tie within the Gen9 entry rack servers is to the DL180 Gen9: the Gen9.1 SPP contents list one System ROM, U20 version 2.92, shared by the two. eosl.date makes no such distinction and gives all four Gen9 entry rack models covered here a single 22 July 2025 end-of-support date and a single September 2014 release date. For another Gen9 model under the same generation-wide entitlement rule, see ProLiant DL380 Gen9 end of life.

Questions people ask about the HPE ProLiant DL160 Gen9
Is the HPE DL160 Gen9 end of life?
HPE's DL160 Gen9 QuickSpecs carry a RETIRED banner and call the base products obsolete and no longer available for sale, with no date attached, and HPE publishes no model-wide end-of-support date. Third-party trackers differ: eosl.date lists end of support on 22 July 2025, and Park Place lists end of service life on 31 January 2023 for the SFF CTO chassis only.
What did the DL160 Gen9 replace, and what came after it?
HPE's QuickSpecs describe the DL160 Gen9 as the next-generation 2P 1U value server replacing the DL360e Gen8. The next model in the same line is the ProLiant DL160 Gen10.
Can I still buy HPE support for a DL160 Gen9?
HPE's US store listed HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential DL160 Gen9 Service (SKU H40K2PE) in October 2026, with 24x7 cover and 4-hour on-site response for covered hardware, through a reseller offer or by quote. The listing does not confirm that HPE will accept a particular unit; your unit's own coverage is looked up by serial number in HPE Support Center Warranty Check.
Does the DL160 Gen9 support Windows Server 2022 or vSphere 8?
HPE's Gen9.1 post-production SPP does not list Windows Server 2022, Windows Server 2025 or vSphere 8; its newest supported releases of those platforms are Windows Server 2019 and vSphere 7.0 U2/U3. HPE's post-production policy adds no new OS support for Gen9 servers.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a DL160 Gen9?
A quote can be requested. Independent maintainers generally provide diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers once vendor support has ended. For an accurate quote, state whether the unit has one or two processors, which storage controller it uses and whether it has the redundant 900W power input modules.
