Park Place's label does not match HPE's QuickSpecs: HPE lists the E5-2603v3 at 1.6GHz, and 1.9GHz is the E5-2609v3, so which CPU configuration the entry covers is unclear. The entry may not cover E5-2600 v4 models. Park Place and Service Express merged, so this is one source. | Park Place Technologies EOSL library: Proliant Dl120G9 1.9Ghz/15Mb/6C (E5-2603V3) |

| End of Support (tracker: eosl.date) | 22 July 2025 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker, not an HPE date. eosl.date gives the same 2025-07-22 date and a 'Sep. 01, 2014' release date to the DL20, DL120, DL160 and DL180 Gen9. HPE's DL120 Gen9 QuickSpecs history starts in Feb 2015, so treat this entry as low confidence. It also disagrees with Park Place (2023-01-31). | eosl.date: HPE End of Life (EOL) Dates and End of Service Life (EOSL) Dates |
Where the HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9 stands today
The DL120 Gen9 is a single-socket Xeon E5 server from HPE's Gen9 entry rack range. Its QuickSpecs (V27, worldwide, 2 October 2017) carry the RETIRED banner and call the base products obsolete and no longer for sale, undated. They give no launch date either: the earliest revision entry, Version 1 to 2, is dated 9 February 2015. HPE links post-production SPP support to how long it supports the Gen9 generation, again naming no date.
The tracker entries pull in different directions. Park Place lists end of life on 31 January 2018 and end of service life on 31 January 2023 for 'Proliant Dl120G9 1.9Ghz/15Mb/6C (E5-2603V3)' only. HPE lists the E5-2603 v3 at 1.6GHz, and 1.9GHz is the E5-2609 v3, so the build it describes is unclear, and E5-2600 v4 models may fall outside it. eosl.date's end-of-support date of 22 July 2025 disagrees with Park Place and comes with a September 2014 release date, earlier than the first dated entry in HPE's DL120 QuickSpecs history (9 February 2015). The dependable answer is per unit, from HPE Support Center Warranty Check, which required an HPE sign-in when we tried it in October 2026.
HPE publishes no model-wide end-of-support date for the DL120 Gen9. Warranty and contract coverage end per unit. HPE's own 'Warranty check' links go to HPE Support Center Warranty Check (https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/warrantycheck). When we tried it in October 2026, it redirected to the HPE Sign In page, so you need an HPE account before you can look up the unit's serial number. Gen9 SPP and System ROM downloads also need an active warranty or support agreement linked to that account (HPE notice a00094704). For cover beyond warranty, HPE's store still lists 1-year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential for the DL120 Gen9 (SKU H40K0PE) by quote.
What still works after HPE support ends
HPE still lists post-warranty cover for the DL120 Gen9 in at least one regional store. Its Poland store listed HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential DL120 Gen9 Service (SKU H40K0PE) in October 2026 with no discontinued marker: a year of round-the-clock on-site hardware service with 4-hour on-site response for covered hardware, by quote. The page warns that response times depend on the covered product's service level, and a listing alone does not mean HPE will take on a given unit. Compare it with an alternative to HPE Tech Care.
Such an agreement also decides firmware access. Notice a00094704 says 'Gen9 and previous server generations continue to require an active warranty or support agreement for downloading the SPP/System ROM firmware', and for System ROM downloads the agreement must be associated with the HPE Passport account. The Gen9.1 post-production SPP, whose release notes HPE reissued in August 2026, carries System ROM P86 version 2.92 (23 November 2021) for this model, plus iLO 4 2.81; Gen9 changes are now limited to bug fixes and security updates, with no new OS or device support. HPE's validation note exempts safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers from entitlement validation, subject to purchase terms and the HPE Software License Agreement. Bulletin HPESBHF04456 names the DL120 Gen9 as affected by CVE-2023-28083 in iLO 4 before v2.82, a version the SPP's 2.81 does not reach.
- HPE notice a00094704 (version 2, 13 Jan 2025): 'Gen9 and previous server generations continue to require an active warranty or support agreement for downloading the SPP/System ROM firmware.' For Gen9 System ROM downloads, the warranty or agreement must be associated with the HPE Passport account. The removal of entitlement checks applies only to Gen10 and later. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's Gen9.1 Post-Production SPP release notes (dated August 2026; document history 'Final Version') say entitlement verification is still required for the Gen9-only SPP. Both download routes 'require HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement'. Their download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP is downloaded 'with the need for an active warranty or support agreement', so the contradiction in the April 2022 Gen9.0 notes does not recur. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's SPP validation note (undated) says ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers are available from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, subject to the purchase terms and the HPE Software License Agreement. For SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD downloads on out-of-warranty products, HPE directs customers to HPE sales, an HPE authorized partner or reseller, or HPE by phone or chat. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE classifies Gen9 as a 'Post-Production' generation. Firmware, driver and system-software changes are limited to bug fixes and security updates, with no new OS support, device support or functionality. Updates are released only to resolve an issue. Its table marks Gen9 'Entitlement required: Yes'. (downloads.hpe.com)
- HPE security bulletin HPESBHF04456 (rev.1, 13 Mar 2023; CVE-2023-28083, stored cross-site scripting in iLO) lists the 'HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9 Server' as affected 'Prior to iLO 4 v2.82'. It names iLO 4 v2.82 and later as the fix for ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers. The Gen9.1 SPP contents (a00127066) carry iLO 4 2.81, which is below that fixed version. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's earlier Gen9.0 post-production SPP release notes (April 2022) contradict themselves. The download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP 'can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement'. The Important Notes, and the next sentence of the same section, say entitlement and an active warranty or support agreement are required. (downloads.hpe.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential DL120 Gen9 Service (SKU H40K0PE) — Listed on HPE's Poland store when read in October 2026, with no discontinued marker. Service method Hardware Onsite, 1-year term, post-warranty coverage, 24x7 coverage with 4-hour on-site response for covered hardware. The page also says 'Response times will depend on the service level of the covered product.' No price is shown, and the visible buying route is 'Request a quote'. A store listing does not by itself show that HPE will accept a particular unit. (buy.hpe.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9
The DL120 Gen9's parts list follows from its single-socket Xeon E5-2600 v3/v4 design on the C610 chipset. Eight DDR4 SmartMemory slots take RDIMMs or LRDIMMs to 256GB, so record which type is fitted. Drives sit in eight SFF or four LFF bays, each version with an optical bay, behind the Dynamic Smart Array B140i on entry models (up to eight SATA drives, RAID 0/1/1+0/5) or the H240 FIO Smart HBA on base models (up to eight SAS or SATA drives). The controller matters because the B140i figures cover SATA only.
There is one power supply bay, holding a 550W FIO non-redundant supply (80 Plus Silver) or 900W power input modules with a power backplane (80 Plus Gold) for redundancy. Three non-redundant fans are standard; kit 765513-B21 gives a redundant five-fan configuration, but fan redundancy is not supported with processors over 105W, so record the CPU alongside the fan kit. Management runs through iLO 4 (firmware 2.0 or later) with 2GB NAND. HPE third-party maintenance generally means diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer visits beyond HPE's own support, and a DL120 quote can be requested.

Extend or refresh the HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9?
Extending a DL120 Gen9 is a reasonable call when the workload is settled and its OS is both on HPE's Gen9.1 list and still inside its own vendor's support. On Windows, HPE's list runs from Server 2012 R2 to Server 2019, and Microsoft's extended end dates set the pace: 13 January 2027 for Server 2016 and 10 January 2029 for Server 2019. A DL120 on Server 2019 with an active HPE support agreement linked to its HPE Passport account keeps both: OS support to that 2029 date and System ROM downloads.
Refresh looks better once the platform ceiling bites. Under HPE's post-production policy Gen9 gets no new OS support: the Gen9.1 list stops at Windows Server 2019 and vSphere 7.0 U2/U3, and Broadcom says general support for vSphere 7.0 ended on 2 October 2025. Linux hosts carry one more step: with Secure Boot enabled, the HPE-DB-2016 key must be in NVRAM to load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. Where a DL120 needs a newer platform, HPE's ProLiant DL120 Gen10 is the next model in the same line, and the refurbished ProLiant configurator can be used to spec a newer server.
- HPE's Gen9.1 post-production SPP (release notes dated August 2026) supports system software and firmware only on Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 and 2019; RHEL 7.9 and 8.8 to 8.10; SLES 12 SP5 and 15 SP4 to SP6; and VMware vSphere 6.5 U3, 6.7 U3 and 7.0 U2/U3 (offline updates only). Windows Server 2022/2025 and vSphere 8 are not on the list. (support.hpe.com)
- The Gen9.1 SPP contents list System ROM P86 version 2.92 (11-23-2021) for the DL120 Gen9, and iLO 4 firmware 2.81. (support.hpe.com)
- Broadcom KB 415405: 'The End of general support for vSphere 7.0 was October 2nd, 2025.' vSphere 7.0 is the newest vSphere release in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP support list. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2019 Extended End Date as 1/10/2029 (Pacific Time). Windows Server 2019 is the newest Windows Server in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP OS list. (learn.microsoft.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2016 Extended End Date as 1/13/2027 6:59:59 AM (Pacific Time). (learn.microsoft.com)
- Gen9 servers running Linux with Secure Boot enabled must have the HPE-DB-2016 secure-boot key installed in NVRAM to load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. (support.hpe.com)
- Original server warranty per QuickSpecs: 3-Year Parts, 1-Year Labor, 1-Year Onsite support with next-business-day response. (support.hpe.com)

Related models
eosl.date's ProLiant table puts the DL20, DL120, DL160 and DL180 Gen9 under one end-of-support date, 22 July 2025, and one 'Sep. 01, 2014' release date, so it offers nothing model-specific for the DL120. HPE's own documents are more precise: the QuickSpecs describe a 1U single-socket (1P) server on the Intel C610 chipset, and the Gen9.1 SPP lists its System ROM as P86. HPE's SPP and System ROM entitlement rule covers Gen9 and earlier generations as a whole, and it applies equally to the models on the ProLiant DL360 Gen9 end of life and ProLiant ML350 Gen9 end of life pages.

Questions people ask about the HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9
Is the HPE ProLiant DL120 Gen9 end of life?
HPE's QuickSpecs for the DL120 Gen9 are retired and describe the base products as obsolete and no longer for sale, but HPE gives no date and publishes no model-wide end-of-support date. eosl.date, a third-party tracker, lists end of support on 22 July 2025, but treat it as low confidence: it disagrees with Park Place and gives the model a September 2014 release date, earlier than the first dated entry in HPE's QuickSpecs history.
Does Park Place's EOSL date apply to my DL120 Gen9?
Possibly not. Park Place lists end of service life on 31 January 2023 for one SKU only, labelled 'Proliant Dl120G9 1.9Ghz/15Mb/6C (E5-2603V3)', and that label does not match HPE's specification for the E5-2603 v3. The entry may not cover E5-2600 v4 models, and Park Place itself says an EOSL listing does not guarantee it can support the device.
Can I update the BIOS on a DL120 Gen9 without a warranty?
HPE requires an HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement to download the Gen9 SPP or System ROM, and for System ROM downloads the agreement must be associated with the Passport account; the Gen9.1 SPP carries System ROM P86 version 2.92 for this model. For out-of-warranty System ROM downloads, HPE's validation note directs customers to HPE sales, an authorised partner or reseller, or HPE by phone or chat.
Can I get third-party maintenance for a DL120 Gen9?
Third-party maintenance providers generally cover diagnosis, replacement parts and engineer attendance for servers beyond vendor support, and a quote can be requested for a DL120 Gen9. Give the provider the bay layout, the storage controller (B140i or H240), the power option and the fan configuration, as these vary between builds.
What came after the DL120 Gen9?
Next in the same line comes the ProLiant DL120 Gen10. If the move is driven by OS needs, bear in mind that Windows Server 2022 and 2025 and vSphere 8 are missing from HPE's Gen9.1 SPP list.
