| End of Support (tracker: eosl.date) | 22 July 2025 | Third-party trackerThird-party tracker, not an HPE date. eosl.date's ProLiant table gives the same 2025-07-22 'End of Support' date and the same 'Sep. 01, 2014' release date to the DL20, DL120, DL160 and DL180 Gen9. Its DL20 release date conflicts with HPE's QuickSpecs, whose Version 1 is dated 01-Dec-2015, so treat this entry as low confidence. It also disagrees with Park Place (2024-07-24). | eosl.date: HPE End of Life (EOL) Dates and End of Service Life (EOSL) Dates |
Where the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 stands today
For this single-processor 1U server, end of life shows up as separate signals: no HPE end-of-life or end-of-service-life announcement for the model was found. The QuickSpecs, last revised as V32 (North America) on 3 December 2018, sit under HPE's RETIRED banner, and HPE's SPP policy says post-production SPPs are supported 'as long as HPE supports that server generation', without naming a date. Park Place gives the CTO chassis an end of life of 24 July 2019 and an end of service life of 24 July 2024, with the caveat that inclusion in its library is no guarantee it can support the device. eosl.date, another tracker, shows end of support on 22 July 2025, but its September 2014 release date clashes with the QuickSpecs' Version 1 date of 1 December 2015 and its end date disagrees with Park Place's, so treat that entry as low confidence.
Because HPE ends coverage unit by unit, check your own DL20's serial in HPE Support Center Warranty Check, which redirected to a sign-in page when we tried it in October 2026. Associate any warranty or support agreement with that HPE account, as HPE requires for Gen9 System ROM downloads. The original warranty is no safe guide to a unit's cover, because the QuickSpecs give both a one-year and a three-year figure for it (see the warranty question below).
HPE publishes no model-wide end-of-support date for the DL20 Gen9. Warranty and contract coverage end per unit. HPE's own 'Warranty check' links go to HPE Support Center Warranty Check (https://support.hpe.com/connect/s/warrantycheck). When we tried it in October 2026, it redirected to the HPE Sign In page, so you need an HPE account before you can look up the unit's serial number. Gen9 SPP and System ROM downloads also need an active warranty or support agreement linked to that account (HPE notice a00094704). For cover beyond warranty, HPE's store still lists 1-year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential for the DL20 Gen9 (SKU H40K5PE) by quote.
What still works after HPE support ends
HPE's Gen9.1 post-production SPP still contains DL20 Gen9 firmware, but access to it is restricted. With release notes reissued in August 2026 as the 'Final Version', that SPP holds System ROM U22 version 3.02 (19 November 2021) for this model and iLO 4 firmware 2.81. Post-production status means firmware, driver and system-software changes are limited to bug fixes and security updates, with no new OS support, device support or functionality. Both download routes need an HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement; HPE notice a00094704 (13 January 2025) limits the removal of entitlement checks to Gen10 and later.
Not everything is gated: under HPE's SPP validation note, ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers come from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, within the purchase terms and the HPE Software License Agreement, while out-of-warranty SPP, System ROM or CPLD requests are referred to HPE sales, an authorised partner or reseller, or HPE by phone or chat. Note one mismatch: bulletin HPESBHF04456 lists the DL20 Gen9 as affected by CVE-2023-28083, a stored cross-site scripting flaw in iLO, prior to iLO 4 v2.82, yet the Gen9.1 SPP's iLO 4 build is 2.81. HPE's Belgian store still listed 1-year post-warranty Tech Care Essential for the model (SKU H40K5PE) in October 2026, by quote, with 24x7 on-site cover and 4-hour response for covered hardware, though a listing does not prove HPE will accept your unit.
- HPE notice a00094704 (version 2, 13 Jan 2025): 'Gen9 and previous server generations continue to require an active warranty or support agreement for downloading the SPP/System ROM firmware.' For Gen9 System ROM downloads, the warranty or agreement must be associated with the HPE Passport account. The removal of entitlement checks applies only to Gen10 and later. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's Gen9.1 Post-Production SPP release notes (dated August 2026; document history 'Final Version') say entitlement verification is still required for the Gen9-only SPP. Both download routes 'require HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement'. Their download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP is downloaded 'with the need for an active warranty or support agreement', so the contradiction in the April 2022 Gen9.0 notes does not recur. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's SPP validation note (undated) says ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers are available from HPE Support Center without entitlement validation, subject to the purchase terms and the HPE Software License Agreement. For SPP, BIOS System ROM or CPLD downloads on out-of-warranty products, HPE directs customers to HPE sales, an HPE authorized partner or reseller, or HPE by phone or chat. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE classifies Gen9 as a 'Post-Production' generation. Firmware, driver and system-software changes are limited to bug fixes and security updates, with no new OS support, device support or functionality. Updates are released only to resolve an issue. Its table marks Gen9 'Entitlement required: Yes'. (downloads.hpe.com)
- HPE security bulletin HPESBHF04456 (rev.1, 13 Mar 2023; CVE-2023-28083, stored cross-site scripting in iLO) lists the 'HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 Server' as affected 'Prior to iLO 4 v2.82'. It names iLO 4 v2.82 and later as the fix for ProLiant Gen8 and Gen9 servers. The Gen9.1 SPP contents (a00127066) carry iLO 4 2.81, which is below that fixed version. (support.hpe.com)
- HPE's earlier Gen9.0 post-production SPP release notes (April 2022) contradict themselves. The download section says the Gen9 post-production SPP 'can be downloaded using HPE passport account, without the need for active warranty or support agreement'. The Important Notes, and the next sentence of the same section, say entitlement and an active warranty or support agreement are required. (downloads.hpe.com)
Vendor support you can still buy
- HPE 1 Year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential DL20 Gen9 Service (SKU H40K5PE) — Listed on HPE's Belgium store when read in October 2026, with no discontinued marker. Service method Hardware Onsite, 1-year term, post-warranty coverage, 24x7 coverage with 4-hour on-site response for covered hardware. The page also says 'Response times will depend on the service level of the covered product.' No price is shown, and the visible buying route is 'Request a quote'. A store listing does not by itself show that HPE will accept a particular unit. (buy.hpe.com)
What a maintenance contract needs to cover on the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9
A maintenance schedule for a DL20 Gen9 should record the exact build, because HPE does not support drive cage changes on this chassis. The SFF version has four bays and the LFF version two, hot-plug or non-hot-plug. Entry and base models use the Dynamic Smart Array B140i (up to four SATA drives, RAID 0/1/5), performance models the H240 FIO Smart HBA, and a P440 was a supported option, so note which is fitted. Memory sits in four DDR4 unbuffered ECC (UDIMM) slots, 64GB at most as four 16GB UDIMMs at 2400MHz, so list the UDIMMs fitted in each unit.
Power and cooling are non-redundant as standard: one 290W FIO supply (80 Plus Silver) and three fans, two at the front and one in the centre. The 900W redundant power input module with power backplane (80 Plus Gold) is supported only on the SFF chassis, so check which chassis a unit uses before assuming redundant power. Keep the iLO 4 controller (4GB NAND) in scope. Server third-party maintenance generally provides diagnosis, replacement parts and engineers past vendor support, and a quote can be requested through the maintenance coverage builder.

Extend or refresh the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9?
HPE's Gen9.1 SPP, which covers the DL20 Gen9, supports system software and firmware only on Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 or 2019; RHEL 7.9 or 8.8 to 8.10; SLES 12 SP5 or 15 SP4 to SP6; and vSphere 6.5 U3, 6.7 U3 or 7.0 U2/U3, offline updates only. The strongest case for keeping a DL20 on maintenance is a small, stable workload on Windows Server 2019, the newest Windows on that list, whose Microsoft extended end date is 10 January 2029 (Pacific Time). On Linux, a DL20 with Secure Boot enabled cannot load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020 unless the HPE-DB-2016 key is installed in NVRAM.
The position changes when anything newer is needed. Windows Server 2022 and 2025 and vSphere 8 are not on HPE's list, Broadcom ended general support for vSphere 7.0 on 2 October 2025, and Windows Server 2016 reaches its extended end date on 13 January 2027. With the Gen9.1 SPP's iLO 4 build also below the version HPE names as the fix for CVE-2023-28083, a DL20 facing an OS upgrade is better refreshed than extended. For a newer platform, the ProLiant DL20 Gen10 is the next model in the same line; refurbished HPE ProLiant servers are another route.
- HPE's Gen9.1 post-production SPP (release notes dated August 2026) supports system software and firmware only on Windows Server 2012 R2, 2016 and 2019; RHEL 7.9 and 8.8 to 8.10; SLES 12 SP5 and 15 SP4 to SP6; and VMware vSphere 6.5 U3, 6.7 U3 and 7.0 U2/U3 (offline updates only). Windows Server 2022/2025 and vSphere 8 are not on the list. (support.hpe.com)
- The Gen9.1 SPP contents list System ROM U22 version 3.02 (11-19-2021) for the DL20 Gen9, and iLO 4 firmware 2.81. (support.hpe.com)
- Broadcom KB 415405: 'The End of general support for vSphere 7.0 was October 2nd, 2025.' vSphere 7.0 is the newest vSphere release in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP support list. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2019 Extended End Date as 1/10/2029 (Pacific Time). Windows Server 2019 is the newest Windows Server in HPE's Gen9.1 SPP OS list. (learn.microsoft.com)
- Microsoft lists the Windows Server 2016 Extended End Date as 1/13/2027 6:59:59 AM (Pacific Time). (learn.microsoft.com)
- Gen9 servers running Linux with Secure Boot enabled must have the HPE-DB-2016 secure-boot key installed in NVRAM to load HPE Linux drivers released after December 2020. (support.hpe.com)
- The QuickSpecs are inconsistent on the original warranty. The warranty NOTE and the model tables say 1-Year Parts, 1-Year Labor and 1-Year Onsite support with next-business-day response. The general warranty paragraph says hardware diagnostic support and repair is available for three years from the date of purchase. (support.hpe.com)

Related models
eosl.date's ProLiant table treats the DL20, DL120, DL160 and DL180 Gen9 as one block, giving all four the same 22 July 2025 end-of-support date and the same September 2014 release date. HPE's own documents describe the DL20 on its own terms: one Xeon E3-1200 v5 or v6, Pentium or Core i3 processor on the Intel C232 chipset, unbuffered ECC memory, and System ROM U22 in the Gen9.1 SPP. HPE's download rule is written for Gen9 and earlier generations as a whole, so the same warranty-or-agreement requirement applies to the models on the ProLiant DL360 Gen9 end of life and ProLiant DL380 Gen9 end of life pages.

Questions people ask about the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9
Is the HPE ProLiant DL20 Gen9 end of life?
HPE has retired the DL20 Gen9 QuickSpecs and calls the base products obsolete and no longer available for sale, without giving a date, and it publishes no model-wide end-of-support date. Third-party trackers do give dates: eosl.date lists end of support on 22 July 2025 (low confidence), and Park Place's EOSL library lists end of service life for the CTO chassis on 24 July 2024.
When does HPE stop supporting the DL20 Gen9?
HPE has not published a model-wide date; coverage ends per unit, according to the warranty or contract tied to each serial number. You can check that in HPE Support Center Warranty Check after signing in to an HPE account. HPE's Belgium store still listed 1-year Post Warranty Tech Care Essential for the DL20 Gen9 (SKU H40K5PE) by quote in October 2026, although a listing does not guarantee HPE will accept a given unit.
Can I still download firmware for the DL20 Gen9?
The Gen9.1 post-production SPP includes System ROM U22 version 3.02 for the DL20 Gen9, but downloading the SPP or System ROM requires an HPE Passport login and an active warranty or HPE support agreement. Some downloads skip that check: HPE's validation note says ProLiant safety and security firmware, iLO, controller components and drivers need no entitlement validation, subject to its purchase terms and software licence agreement.
What warranty did the DL20 Gen9 come with?
HPE's QuickSpecs are inconsistent on this. The warranty note and model tables give one year of parts, one year of labour and one year of on-site support with next-business-day response. The general warranty paragraph says hardware diagnostic support and repair is available for three years from the date of purchase.
What came after the DL20 Gen9?
The DL20 line continues with the ProLiant DL20 Gen10, the next model in the same line. Before planning a move, check your OS needs: the newest Windows Server and vSphere releases on HPE's Gen9.1 SPP list are Windows Server 2019 and vSphere 7.0 U2/U3.
